Explain the general procedure for design of machine elements.

State any two theories of elastic failure giving the equations.

What is S-N curve. Give its significance.

A simply supported shaft of 50mm diameter and 0.5m long is subjected to a load,
at its mid-section that varies cyclically from 2P to 4P. Determine the value of P
from the following:
Yield strength = 450MPa; Endurance limit = 350MPa; Factor of safety = 2;
Size correction factor = 0.85; Surface correction factor = 0.90

Design a double riveted, double butt strap joint for the longitudinal seam of a
boiler shell of 1.5m diameter, which is subjected to an internal pressure of
1 N/mm2. The permissible stresses are: 80MPa in tension, 120MPa in
compression, and 60MPa in shear. Take the efficiency of the joint as 75%.
A 70mm diameter solid shaft is to be welded to a plate by means of a fillet weld,
around the circumference of the shaft. Determine the size of the weld, if the shaft
is subjected to a torque of 4kN-m. The allowable shear stress in the weld is
45MPa.

The head of a steam engine cylinder, 60cm in diameter is subjected to a steam

pressure of 13 bar. The head is held by 16 numbers of M 39 bolts. A copper
gasket is used for which K=0.25. Determine the induced stress in the bolt.
A single plate clutch transmits 20 kW at 1200 rpm. The driving unit is connected
to the shaft by means of 4 bolts placed at 12 cm p.c.d. Find the suitable bolt

diameter if permissible stress is limited to 2 kN/cm2.

How is a sunk key made equally strong in shear and crushing?

Design a socket and spigot type cotter joint to resist a load of 3.5 kN. Assume safe
stresses as: ft=5.6 kN/cm2; fs=4.5 kN/cm2; fc=9.8 kN/cm2.

6.

A steel shaft 1.25 m long between bearings carries 1250 N pulley at its mid point.
The pulley is keyed to the shaft and receives 20 kW at 200 rpm. The belt drive is
horizontal and the ratio of the belt tensions is 3:1. The diameter of the pulley is
600 mm. Compute the shaft diameter.

Two 5 cm shafts running at 350 rpm and transmitting a torque of 1200 Nm are
connected by a flange coupling. The flanges are fitted with six bolts. Permissible
stresses are 35 MPa in shear and 45 MPa in crushing. Design the coupling with a
neat sketch.

Why Wahls factor is considered in the design of helical springs.

The load on a valve spring, when the valve is in closed position is 50 N, and
when it is in fully open position, the load is 60 N. The spring must over the valve
bush of 20 mm diameter and also it must be positioned in a space of 35 mm
diameter. The valve lift is 6 mm. Design the spring, considering variable loading
on the spring.
