A case study is not just the recount of the issues and problems, it is also the detailing of
solutions and recommendations, eg an action plan, to fix the problems. Case studies are
generally presented in report format using headings and subheadings, but check with your
teacher / lecturer for prescribed formats.
Mindmaps
Mindmaps can be a useful strategy to summarise / organise problems and to show their
relationships to each other. The example below is a representation of the problems of the
management case study.
Example
Activity 1
Being able to identify the major themes or issues is important when doing a mindmap. Drag
the correct issue headings to their appropriate places.
Solution
Activity 2
When writing a case study answer, it is important to integrate theory, analysis and evidence
together. Identify the following parts in the paragraph below.
Solution
Solutions
This section evaluates potential solutions for the identified key problems. Often there is more
than one solution, so it is useful to evaluate each solution in terms of its advantages and
disadvantages. This will also assist in determining your recommendations. Things that may
need to be considered are:
costs
time
resources
expertise.
Structure
This section should be clear and concise. Recommended structure:
Example
Recommendations
This section should outline your recommendations based upon the given solutions for each of
the identified problems. It may also need to include an action plan, eg what should be done
by whom and the associated timelines, but check with your teacher / lecturer for specific
requirements. Each recommendation should be realistic, ie practical and achievable, and be
linked back to relevant and supporting theory.
Structure
Headings and subheadings should be used in this section. For example:
Communication
Staff consultation
Outline the recommendations based on the identified solutions and supported by relevant
theory.
Staff meetings
Outline the recommendations based on the identified solutions and supported by relevant
theory.
Leadership
Team building
