knowledge and introduction about Islamic . From her teachings , aqidah is
most important in our life . As a good muslims we must learn more about
aqidah to complete an ibadah . From this chapter and title we learn Tawhid is
to clarify Unity of Allah . Tawhid literally means to believe , to uphold , and to
declare the oneness of Allah . It derived from the Arabic word ‘ wahhada’
means to unite , unify or consolidate , unification or asserting oneness.
Terminologically , tawhid means affirming Allah to be one and singular . One
means there is no god besides Allah and singular means that god cannot be
divided or compartmentalized into different personalities.

(Rububiyyah)
2. To believe that worship is the exclusive right of Allah (Uluhiyyah)
3. To believe that Allah is Being (zat) and has many attributes (Asma’wa

INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC AQIDAH

TAWHID IN OTHER MEANINGS

5
Central to Islamic belief is the oneness or unity (in Arabic: tawhid) of
Allah, or God; this is expressed in the basic statement of faith (the shahadah
): "There is no god but god." The basic teaching of Islam is that all religions
at some level express this basic truth, but have been infected by some form
of "associationism" (shirk ), the belief that there is some other thing as
absolute as god, whether that other thing be another god or simply the self.
Tawhid , the unity of God, means that God has no associates, no parents,
and no children. The only guarantee of human salvation in the Qur'an is this
knowledge, and affirmation, that there is no divinity but god.

Since the material world is Allah's creation, this means that the
material world in some way reflects the intention or nature of Allah. The
principle quality of God is unity, so it follows that the created world, the real
world we live and experience, also comprises a unity. In Islamic thought, this
idea is called "wahdat al-wujud," the "unity of the real," and underlies much
of the Islamic world view.

Perhaps the three most important terms to remember in order to

understand Islam are these three: tawhid, the unity of god, wahdat al-

Hayathi.

8
INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC AQIDAH

wujud, the unity of the real, and dhikr, the requirement by Allah that
humans continually remember their god and creator. Dhikr is, of course, the
remembrance of tawhid , the unity of god. The ideal, of course, is a perpetual
remembrance of God and God's unity in everything the believer does, thinks,
and says.

THE ONENESS OF GOD

Say: “He is God, the One, the eternally besought of all. He begets not,
nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him” (112:1-4)

6
All that is in heaven and earth gives glory to God. He is Mighty, the
Wise. His is the kingdom of the heavens and earth. He ordains life and death
and has power over all things. He is the First and Last, the Visible and the
Unseen. He has knowledge of all things (57:1-3), and he that renounces idol-
worship and puts his faith in God shall grasp a firm handle that will never
break.

Allah:there is no God but Him, the Living, the Eternal One. Neither
drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. His is what the heavens and the earth
contain. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows
what is before and behind men. They can grasp only that part of His

knowledge which He wills. His throne is as vast as the heavens and the
earth, and the preservation of both does not weary him. He is the Sublime,
the Tremendous. God hears all and knows all.

God is the Patron of the faithful. He leads them from darkness to the
light. As for the unbelievers, their patrons are false Gods, who lead them
from light to darkness. They are heirs of Hell and shall abide in it for ever
(2:255-257). Yet there shall be no compulsion in religion. True guidance is
never imposed by force.

TAWHID (ONENESS OF GOD)

7
The most important and fundamental teaching of Islam is belief in the
Oneness of God. This is term of Tawhid. This is explained in the Kalimah, the
first Article of Faith: there is no god but God; there is no one worthy of
worship except God. This is the first article of Faith of the Muslim, who
expresses it in these words: “There is no god but God and Muhammad is the
Messenger of God.

Islam attaches great importance to this pillar of faith, concerning the

Unity of God and the finality of the Prophethood. This is the foundation and
bedrock of islam. The expression of belief in this Article distinguishes a
believer from a non-believer. Belief in one Supreme God is essential;
knowledge of God and His Attributes is necessary for one to fashion one’s life

10

in virtue in accordance with the Divine Will. There is no room for polytheism
(belief in more than one God) or atheism (belief in no God) in Islam. A true
believer denounces all other kinds of deities and lowers his head in
obedience to God, the Almighty. The believer, accepts and follows His
Commands in word and deed.

Tawhid includes the following aspects:

a) Concept of Allah (God)

The word Allah means, God. The Kalimah expresses the

supremeness of God. All mortals are dependent on no one. No other
being is worthly of worship on account of his power save God. He is
Unique and One in His Person and Attributes. The concept of Tawhid
(Unity) was conveyed to all His Messengers, from Adam to
Muhammad. All the Prophets, including Noah, Abraham, Moses and
Jesus, taught the simple but absolute concept of Tawhid, and finally it
was taught by the last of them Muhammad.

The Knowledge of God and His Attributes inspires and guides one on
the Right Path, and removes all dubious ideas about the existence of
one or many creators. Its confirms God as the sole and supreme
Planner, Designer, Controller, and Creator of earth and the universe.
For surely, such a magnificent world with infinite contrasts of colour, of
light and darkness, of deep blue oceans and high green mountains and
of silvery galaxies of stars with their strange unknown movements,
could not have come into existence by itself or by some freak accident.
Surely, the delicate discipline and balance of this unique system could
only be maintained through the Grace, Knowledge and Power of the
One God, Allah

11
INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC AQIDAH

b) Attributes of God

8
Surah al-Baqarah portrays the Glory of God in these words:
“Allah! There is no deity but He, the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal.
No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in heaven and
on earth. Who is there who can intercede in His presence except as He
permits?

“He knows (what appears to His creatures as) before or after or

behind them. Nor shall they compass anything of His Knowledge
except as He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth,
and he feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. For He is the
Most High, the Supreme (in Glory).” (Quran 2:255)

A glimpse of His Grandeur and Majesty can be seen in the

following verse of the Qur’an: “Allah is He, then whom there is no other
god: The Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of peace and perfection,
the Guardian of Faith, the Presever of safety, the Exalted in Might, the
Supreme. Glory to Allah! High is He above the partners they attribute
to Him. He is Allah the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of forms and
colours. To Him belongs the most beautiful names. Whatever is in
heavens and on earth declares His praise and Glory. He is the exalted
in Might, the Wise.” (59:23)

God is free of weaknesses and frailties and needs no support of a

friend, father or offspring:” he is allah, the one and only; Allah, the
Enternal,Absolute; He begets not, nor is he Begotten.and there is none
like him. “ (Quran 112:1-4)

Muslims believe the divine attributes are synonomous only with
god. These qualities are inherent only in god, and this belief is an integral
part iman.It s true that muslims are unable to describe god because his
person is beyond human comprehension. However, the existence of god can
be realized through his manifestations all round us and through his attributes
as foretold by his messengers. Some of the more important attributes are:

1. Al-Khaliq. God is the creator, the designer and controller of the

universe. He is the master of all.

2. Al-Qadim and Al-Qayyum. He is infinite and Enternal. He has no

beginning nor end. He was when there was nothing and he will be
when there will be nothing.

4. Al-Hakim. He is All-wise. All his decisions are based on Supreme

includes everything.

6. Ar-Rahim and Ar-Rahman. He is most merciful and most gracious.

(c) Huquq Allah

This verifies man’s obligations to his maker. Since god is the

11

creator and sustainer of the universe, with all its beauty, men, as

faithful and dutiful subjects, owe him certain obligations, out of respect
and reverence. These includes: worship of god(ibadah): it is man’s
primary duty and obligation to worship god and no one else. He is
reminded of this duty persistently in the quran: “ o you people!
Worship your guardian lord, who created you and those who came
before you, that you may learn to do acts of righteousness; who has
made the earth your couch, and the heavens your canopy; and send
down rain from the clouds and brought forth therewith fruits for your
sunstenance.”(quran 2:21-22)

And again in surah zariya: “I have only created jinn and men, that
they may serve me. No sustenance do I require of them, nor do I
require that they should feed me. For Allah is He Who gives sustenance
to all- Lord of Power and Steadfast for ever (Quran 51:56-58). Every
Prophet commanded his people to worship and obey God. Prophet
Noah exhorted his people to worship Allah alone: “He said, “O my
people! Worship Allah! You have no other deity but Him. Will you no
fear Him?” (Quran 23:23). Prophet Hud was sent to the people of ‘Ad
with the same Message: “To the ‘Ad People, We sent Hud, one of their
own brothers. He said: ‘O my people! Worship Allah: you have no other
deity but Him. Will you not fear Him?” (Qur’an 65). Prophet Salih came
to the Thamud people: “To the Thamud people, We sent Salih, one
their own brothers, He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah; you have no
other deity but Him.” (Quran 7:73). Abraham (Ibrahim) said to his
people, “Serve God and fera Him, that will be best for you – if you

understand.” (29:16). Jesus (‘Isa) said to his followers: “O children of

Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever joins other
deities with Allah, Allah will forbid him Paradise and the Fire will be his
abode.” (5:75). Messengers were sent to every nation with the same
Message: “For We assuredly sent Messengers amongst every people,
with the Command – Serve Allah and abstain from evil.” (Qur’an
16:36).
IMPORTANCE OF TAWHID

12
Tawhid can define as Tawhid Rububiyyah, Tawhid Uluhiyyah and
Tawhid Asma Wal Al-Sifat. First the meaning for Tawhid Rububiyyah is to
believe that Allah is a Creator , Nourisher, and provide for all. For example
belief in the oneness of Allah as the lord Sustainer , Creator , Controller,
Master, Owner, and Provider of the world. As a muslims it is a
acknowledgement of a god’s lordship . Allah mentions in the Holy Quran
chapter Al-Anbiya:22 , if there were , in the heaven and the earth other gods
besides Allah , there would have been confusion in both! But glory to Allah ,
the lord of the throne ( high is he ) above what the attribute to him . This is
a proof Allah as a Creator and Controller.

The another importance for tawhid is Tawhid Uluhiyyah . The meaning

for Tawhid Uluhiyyah is to believe that worship is the exclusive right of
Allah . Uluhiyyah is derived from the word Ilah. It is means the capacities to
fulfill the needs of others and to give shelter and protections . This tawhid
differentiates a muslims from the non-muslims . In the holy quran chapter Al-
Zukhruf: 84 says its is he who is Allah in heaven and Allah on earth and he is
full of wisdom and knowledge.

12 Principles Of Islam; Maulana Wahiduddin Khan; Goodword Books; 2000

16
INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC AQIDAH

Tawhid Asma Wal Al-Sifat means oneness of the names and attributes.
All the names and attributes are the absolute qualities of Allah. In contrast
humans attributes are not absolute . It can define as no tahrif , ta’til , takyif ,
tamthil all attributes to Allah.

CONCLUSION

Summary from this Tawhid is Unity of Allah. In holy Al-Quran says ( 1.

He is Allah, the one and only ; 2. Allah, the eternal , absolute ; 3. He
begetteth not , nor is he begotten ; 4. And there is none like unto him ) (Al-
Ikhlas: 1-4) . This is meaning that Allah as a Creator and Controller. Tawhid
literally means to belive, to uphold, and to declare the oneness of Allah. In
tawhid have three important aspects which it Tawhid Rububiyyah means to
believe that Allah is the Creator, Nourisher, and Provider for all ; Tawhid
Uluhiyyah to believe that worship is the exclusive right of Allah ; Tawhid
Asma Wal Al- Sifat to believe that Allah is being ( zat) and has many
attributes.
