Functional description of the overspeed governors

The overspeed governor is the mechanical, positive acting release organ for a safety gear on the
lift or similar conveyor and lifting gear. It primarily consists of a base plate, two lateral end shields,
the Kombi governor wheel with rope uptake, blocking collar and curve control, as well as the
retaining pawl (arresting pendulum).
A self-aligning roller with rubber ring located on the arresting pendulum bearing is drawn on the
turning wheel with an extension spring arranged between the pendulum and end shield. When the

Status: 8. October 2013

page 9

Overspeed governors and accessories HJ 200-Product information

governor wheel turns the self-aligning roller bearing rolls over the turning wheel. Due to the curve
cam impulse force acting against the extension spring force the pendulum carries out a swinging
movement. The retaining pawl part (gripping catch) opposite the self-aligning roller bearing relative
to the pendulum bearings acts from a certain speed (on reaching the preset tripping speed v1) of
the Kombi wheel, at the given extension spring force, in the blocking collar and suddenly blocks the
wheel. This causes a force dependent on various factors to be formed between the groove and the
drawn, driven governor rope, due to friction, with which the safety gear is mechanically strained and
pushed inwards.
This takes place with Jungblut governors in both directions of rotation, i.e. in the upwards and
downwards movement of the lift car, with the exception of the Z12 and Z6 types, which only act
mechanical strained in the downwards direction at the tripping speed.
With the previously described swivel movement of the pendulum, an additional safety switch is
actuated via a lever attached to this pendulum for positive opening of the control current circuit.
This takes place in overspeed governors up to a normal speed of 1.00 m/s at the same time as the
mechanical interception. In lifts with a rated speed greater than 1.00 m/s, this must take place
before the tripping speed is reached (EN 81-1, 9.9.11.1) and can take place by means of
preliminary switch off.

Prototype test and certification

Jungblut overspeed governors with AGB component testing are prototype tested safety
components for rope and hydraulic lifts to EN 81-1 and EN 81-2, as well as for similar conveyor and
lifting gear, such as e.g. shelf-operating equipment. Each overspeed governor of the EC-typeexamination certificate as well as the EC declaration of conformity in accordance with EG Lift
Directive 95/16/EG. The CE mark is integrated in the rating plate of the overspeed governor. The
EC-type-examination certificate, as well as the operating and maintenance instructions provide
additional information about the installation and use of the governor. Important information is
summarised in the overviews of the range of use as well as the selection parameters for Jungblut
overspeed governors.
With respect to EN 81, lease note that measures are also required, to prevent the ropes from
jumping from their pulleys when they become slack, as well as the penetration of foreign bodies
between the rope and pulley. This requirement can be fulfilled in the Jungblut governors by the
offer of the following order items: rope jump-off protection, slack rope switch for tensioning weight,
protective cover for the rope pulley.

Works speed setting

According to the valid regulations (e.g. EN 81), a permissible tripping speed v1 (m/s) is selected for
the given rated speed v (m/s), which enables fault-free operation and does not exceed the highest
possible limit of these regulations. This specification is carried out by the customers or by Jungblut
if the relevant information is provided. The tripping speed set in the works is sealed and must not
be deliberately or unconsciously manipulated.

Safety switch
Apart from the mechanical arrestor of the overspeed governor, a safety switch is positively
actuated, which interrupts the control current circuit (opener contact).
Jungblut overspeed governors operate at the tripping speed in a downwards and upwards direction
and thus positively actuate the attached safety switch in bother directions of rotation, with the
exception of the already aforementioned Z12 and Z6-types, which only automatically mechanically
open the switching contact in a downwards direction at the tripping speed.
Both gripping, as well as latching design switches are available for the Jungblut overspeed
governor. In the gripping safety switch design the switching contact automatically closes, if the
pendulum returns to its initial position by turning the governor wheel against the direction of rotation
of the operation. In the latching safety switch design on the other hand, the switch contact also has
to be reconnected by pulling the contact tappet on the switch.
The standard version of the Jungblut overspeed governor is equipped with the safety switch 20K
Different to the gripping design, this switch can also be used in the 20K MG model as a latching
switch with restart lockout. In addition safety switches in gripping or latching design with
switching contact: an opener and a closer, or two openers are available for higher standards with
respect to contact assignment.
For explosion-protected ranges a gripping safety switch (an opener and a closer) with explosion
protection is available.

page 11

Overspeed governors and accessories HJ 200-Product information

Remote triggering
The remote triggering (solenoid) serves to functionally control the overspeed governor, if this is not
accessible, e.g. in case of shaft installation. In the case of remote triggering, the magnetic coil of the
solenoid is energised on actuation of a pulse driven key-operated pushbutton, whereby this pulls
down the arrester catch of the arrester pendulum with the aid of an anchor rod. The arresting
pendulum then drops into the blocking collar of the overspeed governor wheel and initiates the
arrestor process when the wheel is turned.
Standard design Jungblut remote solutions are supplied for direct connection via a rectifier
connector.
Please note that when on pressing the key-operated pushbutton for the remote triggering, that this
must be pressed not longer than 5 seconds per minute. This can be identified by a noticeable
warning sign on the push button.
The remote triggering with rectifier connector connection, can be supplied for the subsequent
attachment of remote triggering. In particular, please note the assembly and safety instructions
attached to the operating and maintenance instructions. For supply voltage 196 VDC or 24 VDC or
12 VDC three additional remote triggerings are available.

Electrical preliminary switch off

The electrical preliminary switch off is an electrical safety device in accordance with EN 81-1,
9.9.11.1, which causes the control current circuit to be opened and that an electric safety device
stops the car (minimum 115% of the rated speed).
With Jungblut governors, this takes place in both directions of rotation, i.e. during both the upwards
and downwards run of the lift car and must be included in the order from a rated speed greater than
1,00 m/s, in accordance with EN 81. Please also note the minimum tripping speed v1min=0,60 m/s
for the HJ 200 with preliminary switch off which is due to the design.
The preliminary switch off switch is actuated as for the safety switches by tilting the lowering pin on
the arresting pendulum, whereby the switch can be adjusted according to the prescribed

Status: 8. October 2013

page 12

Overspeed governors and accessories HJ 200-Product information

preliminary switch offspeed. The switching contacts open automatically at the arrestor at the
latest.
The Jungblut overspeed governor HJ 200 can be supplied with one switch for both directions of
rotation and electromagnetic reset of the contact pin. Please not that in the case of the Z-12
models, a preliminary switch off is generally supplied with separate switches for the upwards /
downwards movement.
This design of the preliminary switch off with electromagnetic reset of the contact pin is particularly
recommended for shaft installation (see also remote triggering), whereby the set bolts that have
locked into place can be reset with a pushbutton. Please note the duty cycle 3% or 4,5% (see
content of delivery) of the reset solenoid!

Test groove
In the test groove, the tripping speed is produced when travelling at rated speed if the rope is
moved from the main groove to the test groove, due to the fact that the ratio of the diameters of the
main groove to the test groove equates to the ratio of the tripping speed v1 to the rated speed v. If
the pendulum locks into place, the tripping speed is maintained; if the pendulum does not lock into
place, the set speed is exceeded. The test groove is designed as a 38 groove, as is the main
groove, however without undercut.
The standard version of the test groove is designed for a transmission ratio of 1:1.40 for the
overspeed governor HJ 200. Deviating transmission ratios, which require a special test groove
design, are only available on request.

Creeping protection
The creeping protection is a separate special mechanism attached to the OSG that prevents
inadvertent dropping or lifting of the list cage.
A magnetic coil is attached to the side of the OSG by means of a mounting bracket. The front tip of
the magnet armature points towards the pendulum roller arm of the arresting pendulum. While the
lift cage is travelling, the magnet armature is retracted by a 100 % ED DC magnet so that the OSG
wheel can rotate freely in both directions. A safety switch actuated by the magnet armature is
closed an monitors the armature position of the magnet.
As soon as the lift cage stops at a floor, the magnet is de-energised and the retracted magnet
armature is pushed by spring force in the direction of the pendulum roller arm. The front tip of the
armature is now located on or below the pendulum roller arm of the arresting pendulum. If the lift

Status: 8. October 2013

page 13

Overspeed governors and accessories HJ 200-Product information

cage is inadvertently lowered or lifted (= OSG wheel turning), the magnet armature is moved to a
position below the pendulum roller arm of the arresting pendulum, stopping the mechanism in
arresting position, so that the arresting pendulum engages in the safety cogs.
The design of the devices prevents incorrect connection, provided that the operating, installation
and maintenance instructions are adhered to!

Overspeed governor with emergency limit shut-down

With this combined system, the emergency limit switch is triggered when a preset upper or lower
limit point in the lift shaft is exceeded. At these limit points, the adjustable coil springs (combined
springs) attached to the governor cable by means of cable clamps swivel the switching forks of the
overspeed governor outwards, triggering the mechanism.
The design of the devices prevents incorrect connection, provided that the operating, installation
and maintenance instructions are adhered to!

Rotary encoder connection and rotary encoder

Jungblut overspeed governors can be built with a special design for shaft copying for the
attachment of a rotary encoder, for encoders with shaft stub or encoders with hollow shafts. These
models are provided for direct connection via a retracted shaft stub axially mounted on the
overspeed governor. The encoder is mounted on a flange-mounted bridge fitted to the governor
(precisely flush) with the shaft. The customer provides the connection link and assembly of the
encoder, insofar as the encoder is not purchased from Jungblut.
Alternatively it is possible to assemble a hollow shaft encoder directly to the shaft stub of the
overspeed governor
Apart from the possibility of the aforementioned axial sensor fixings, it is also possible to radially
connect a rotary encoder with shaft stub to the overspeed governor via a toothed belt. The
transmission ratio of the ring gear of the governor-wheel, to the gear wheel for holding the toothed
belt on the shaft of the sensor is 4:1. The toothed belt extension kit consists of a gear ring with 44
or 48 teeth, a gear wheel with 11 or 12 teeth, the toothed belt, as well as the fixing plate.
Apart from the preparation for the connection of a rotary encoder, an incremental rotary encoder
can also be purchased directly from Jungblut (after technical clarification). The encoders are
attached to the overspeed governor with one of the aforementioned possibilities.
