Residency Chef
Full-time (40 hours/week), exempt
Montalvo Arts Centers Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program is an international,
multidisciplinary artist residency that has supported the culinary arts through working Fellowships
since 2004. Located in Saratoga, California in the heart of Silicon Valley, the Lucas Artists Residency
Program is a vibrant and significant hub for the creative process.
The Lucas Artists Program is currently seeking its first full-time Chef with a strong interest in
planning and preparing sustainably sourced meals for a small, creative community. The selected Chef
will be responsible for procuring local and sustainable foods, daily cooking, menu and recipe
development, and community building around the table. We are seeking a chef who is interested in
developing their repertoire, managing a community kitchen and the budget to support it. The
Residency Chef has access to the resident kitchen garden, to cultivate and manage with volunteers as
they choose. The residency Chef will live on site.
As part of a long range vision for our culinary arts program at Montalvo, inspired by a Slow Food
philosophy, the Resident Chef will be the key staff member to support Montalvo in developing
programming and supporting residencies in the culinary arts that promote the development and
expansion of the culinary craft. Opportunities may also be available to participate in Montalvos
Culinary Programs through educational outreach, workshops, conversations and other pubic
programming that help to build awareness of the culinary arts.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Plan and prepare Dinner Monday-Thursday and Friday Lunch for the resident artists and
invited guests. Typically these meals are between 10-15 people.
Plan and prepare a bi-monthly Directors Dinner, or meals/culinary events for the purpose of
donor cultivations and introduction to the residency program at Montalvo. Typically the
Directors Dinner serves between 20-30 people.
Commit to using sound ecological and fiscal principles to guide the sourcing and procuring of
all produce, dairy poultry, fish and meats.
Maintain and develop relationships with local farmers and producers.
Work as a team member with Montalvo staff, trustees, residency artists and volunteers in the
development of Montalvos overall Culinary Program.
Manages all shopping requirements, and petty cash within established budgets.
Interest and ability to work with and interact with artists within the Lucas Artists Residency
Program, along with outside groups to support the community.
Training and supervision of on-call staff and program volunteers and interns.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to develop diverse menus with an emphasis on locally sourced
ingredients, including consideration for dietary restrictions of artists and guests.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with particular attention to detail and
capacity to multitask under pressure. Highly motivated, positive person with demonstrated
ability to manage a busy kitchen independently or with limited support.
Ability to conduct effective problem solving resolution.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team, and take initiative as required, under direct
or indirect supervision. Ability to take leadership of specific programs as assigned.
Ability to live and work on site at Montalvo is required.

Working Conditions & Physical Tasks:

Typical culinary environment; requires the ability to stand or sit while working in a kitchen area. Some job
functions performed outdoors and require walking over uneven and sloped. Some local travel may be
necessary; valid drivers license and access to own vehicle is required. While performing the duties of this
job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; stand;
walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally
required to, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth
perception. Background check and DOJ LiveScan fingerprint clearance required.
Wage: $2,500.00 per month base pay, plus housing, meals and benefits.

approval of the Residency Director.
