ASSIGNMENT 1

PCM0035

General Chemistry

INSTRUCTIONS:
This is an individual assignment.
The assignment must be submitted to the lecturer by 19/7/2013 before 5pm.
Question 1
(a)

How many hydrogen atoms are there in 6.0 g of C2H3OH?

(b)

Provide the correct name for Lead (II) nitrate.

(c)

Methanol, CH3OH is the product of the reaction between H 2 and CO.

(1.5 marks)
(1 mark)

2 H2 + CO CH3OH
In an experiment, 5.70 moles of H2 are allowed to react with 3.50 moles of CO in a
vessel. Determine the limiting reactant and calculate the mass of excess reactant
remaining after the reaction. (Atomic mass: C = 12.01, O = 16.00)
(2.5 marks)
Question 2
(a)

State whether the following ionic compounds are soluble or insoluble in water at
25oC.
Number

_____________
(1 mark)

(b)

Calculate the mass of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) required to make a volume of 125
mL of a 0.278 M phosphoric acid solution.
(Molecular mass: phosphoric acid = 97.99)
(2 marks)

(c)

In a titration experiment, a conical flask containing 15.0 mL of a solution of 0.3 M

of H2SO4 is titrated with NaOH solution having a concentration of 0.5 M from a
burette. Neutralization is complete at the equivalence point. With the information
provided above, answer the following.
(i) Write the balanced equation for the chemical reaction in the conical flask.
(ii) Calculate the volume of NaOH in mL that is required in this titration for the
solution in the conical flask to reach the equivalence point.

Question 3
(a)

Vapour for an unknown liquid whose empirical formula is CH2 was collected in a
262 mL flask at 0.9937 atm and 100 oC. The flask weighed 96.9197 g empty and
97.6342 g when the vapour condensed into liquid. (Universal gas constant, R =
0.0821 L.atm/mol.K)
(i) Determine the molar mass of the gas
(ii) Predict the molecular formula of the gas.
(3 marks)

(b)

If a given sample of gas, collected over water at 20 oC and 758 mmHg, occupies a
volume of 150 mL, calculate what volume the same sample of dry gas will occupy
at STP. (Universal gas constant, R = 0.0821 L.atm/mol.K).
(2 marks)

Question 4
(a) Use Hess's Law to calculate the heat of reaction (Hrxn) for the following
reaction:
C2H2 (g) + 2 H2 (g) C2H6 (g)
Given the following balanced thermochemical equations:
2 C2H2 (g) + 5 O2 (g) 4 CO2 (g) + 2 H2O
(g)
2 C2H6 (g) + 7 O2 (g) 4 CO2 (g) + 6 H2O
(g)
2 H2 (g) + O2 (g) 2 H2O (g)

H = 2602 kJ
H = 3123 kJ
H = 572 kJ

From your answer, calculate the amount of heat evolved per gram of C 2H6 (g)
produced. (Atomic mass: C = 12.01, H = 1.00)
(3 marks)
(b)

A 30.0 g sample of metal is heated to 100 oC by placing it in a boiling water bath.

The metal is removed from the boiling water, quickly dried and then placed in 25.0
g of water at 22.0 oC. The final temperature was 27.6 oC, what was the specific heat
of the metal?
(Specific heat of water = 4.18 J / g.C)
