Ch-9 Life in the Grasslands

Important Termsa) Chinook-It is a hot wind that blows in winter and therefore raises the
temperature within a short period of time.
b) Ranches- They are large cattle farms
c) Combine- A single machine which can combine the tasks of sowing,
ploughing and threshing, i.e a three in one.
1.The Prairiesa) Location-These are the temperate grasslands of North America. They are
bound by the Rocky Mountains in the west and the Great Lakes in the East.
b) Climate- The continental type of climate characterized by extreme
temperature. Moderate rainfall and Chinook a local wind blows here.
c)Flora and Fauna- The trees like willow, alders and poplars grow . Crops like
maze , potatoes ,soya bean , cotton, and Alfa Alfa grown in the areas .In these
areas cattle rearing is also done bison or the American beefalo is the most
important animal found here .
d)Life of the people The people of the region are hard working , Dairy farming
is important industry . minerals such as coal and iron are found in abundance .
2.The Veldsa)Location These are the temperate grassland of South Africa , They are
bound by the Darkens Burg mountains on the east and Kalahari desert in the
west .
b)Climate- it is characterized by mild climate .They receive rainfall mainly in the
summer months from November to February.
C)Flora and Fauna- The welds do not have much vegetation ,grasses dominate
the landscape . The popular variety of grass are red grass, acacia and maroola.
The animals found are lions, leopards, Cheetah and kudu. The main crops are
maize ,wheat , barley oats and potatoes .Cash crops are tobacco, sugarcane and
cotton.
Life of people - The people mostly are engages in sheep rearing . Dairy
farming is also an important activity . Gold and diamond mining are major
occupation of the people .
