You are given three unlabelled bottles A, B and C, containing colourless solutions, such
that one of them is acid, the others being basic and neutral. How will you distinguish
between them using china rose as an indicator?
Ans. The three solutions are tested with china rose solution. The one which turns its colour
from pink to green is basic solution and is kept aside.
Now the remaining two solutions are tested with the green paste of china rose as obtained
above. The one which turns its colour back to pink is acidic while the remaining is neutral
solution.

return it provides nitrates and nitrites to the plant.
There is no waste in a forest. Explain giving two points.
Ans. There is no waste in a forest as herbivores are eaten by carnivores. When carnivores
die they become food for vultures. The animal droppings and dead leaves are converted
into humus. In this way nutrients are cycled and nothing goes waste in the forests.

(a) Why the earthworm is called a farmers friend?

(b) Draw a neat, labeled diagram of a soil profile.
Ans. (a) Earthworms turn the soil as they dig through it and move in and out. This makes
the soil well-aerated and more fertile. Hence they called friends of the farmer.
(a) What are indicators? Name two natural indicators.
(b) Why does turmeric stain red when washed with soap?
Ans. (a) Chemical substances that indicate the nature (acidic or basic) of other substances
by their colour change are called indicators.
Two natural indicators are Litmus and china rose solution.
(b) Soap contains base and turmeric turns red with a base, hence turmeric stains red when
washed with soap.
(a) Why is factory waste neutralized before disposing into water bodies?
(b) Explain why calamine solution or baking soda paste is applied on the part of the body
stung by an ant?
Ans. (a) Factory wastes contain acidic and basic impurities. These if released into water
bodies will harm the aquatic plants and animals. Hence these are first neutralized and
then released into the water bodies.
(b) When an ant bites, it injects the acidic liquid (formic acid) into the skin. The effect
of the acid can be neutralized by rubbing baking soda or calamine solution, which
contains zinc carbonate.
a) Define photosynthesis.
b) Draw a schematic diagram showing photosynthesis.
Ans. The process by which plants make food with the help of water, carbon dioxide,
sunlight and chlorophyll in the leaves .During this process oxygen is released and
carbohydrates get converted into starch.
Diagram
a) Explain how an amoeba ingests and digests food?
b) Draw a neat and well labelled diagram of amoeba.
Ans. a) Amoeba feeds on some microscopic organisms. When it senses food, it pushes out
pseudopodia around the food particle and engulfs it. The food becomes trapped in a food

vacuole. Digestive juices are secreted into the food vacuole. They act on the food and
break it down into simpler substances. Gradually the digested food is absorbed.

a) Why forests are called green lungs?
b) What are decomposers? Give an example.
Ans. a) Forests are called green lungs because plants in the forest help to provide oxygen
for animal respiration. They also maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
b) The microorganisms which convert the dead plants and animals to humus for eg.
bacteria.
a) Why do we get cramps in the legs after heavy exercise?
b)How does the exchange of gases take place in the following:
(i) Frog
(ii) Insects
(iii) Fish
Ans. a) We get cramps as our muscles start breathing anaerobically which results in
accumulation of lactic acid. These cramps are due to lactic acid.
b) Frog- lungs and slimy skin
Insects tracheal tubes
Fish gills
The recent calamity in Uttarakhand could have been avoided if man was less ruthless with
the environment and prevented deforestation. Amongst all this, the headmaster of a school
near Kedarnath started a campaign of planting trees on a regular basis.
On the basis of this paragraph answer the following questions:
a)What is deforestation? Give two advantages of a forest.
b)What value did the headmaster of the school exhibit by planting trees?
Ans. a) Cutting of trees on a large scale for commercial purposes.
Forests give products like wax, gum etc and they prevent soil erosion.
b) He was courageous, hopeful and a responsible citizen.
Give reasons for the following:
a) We use woolen clothes in winters
b) Cooking pans are usually provided with copper bottoms
c) Air conditioners are placed up in a room not on the floor
d) We feel hot when we stand near a fire
e) Mercury is chosen as a thermometric liquid
Ans.
a) woollen clothes trap air , which is a bad conductor of heat
b) Copper is a good conductor of heat, thus transfer the heat by conduction
c) Hot air rises up, which would be cooled down by ACs. It is based on convection
d) Heat reaches to us by radiation
Mercury does not stick to the glass walls OR it is the only liquid at room temp OR it is
shiny so is easily visible OR expands uniformly on heating
a) How is soil formed? Name the factors responsible for soil formation.
b) What is soil erosion? Why is soil erosion more in desert or bare land?
c) How can soil erosion be prevented?
Ans. a) Soil is formed by the breaking down of rocks by the action of wind, water and
climate. The factors are wind, water and climate.
b) The removal of land surface by water, wind or ice is known as erosion. There are
no trees to hold the soil particles together in a desert, hence soil erosion is more in desert
or bare land.
c) Soil erosion can be prevented by adopting the following methods:
(i) Afforestation should be undertaken.
(ii) To reduce the effect of strong winds in the fields, the trees should be planted
along the boundaries of the fields.
(iii) The practice of crop rotation can also be followed.

Draw a neat and well labelled diagram of the human respiratory system.
Differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
Diagram
Aerobic respiration The process of breakdown of food with the help of oxygen.
Glucose (in the presence of oxygen) Carbon dioxide + water + energy
Eg-animals, human beings
Anaerobic respiration The process of breakdown of food without the help of oxygen.
Glucose (in the absence of oxygen) Carbon dioxide + alcohol + energy
Eg-Yeast
Define inhalation and exhalation.
How do plants breathe?
What happens if a plant is overwatered?
a)Inhalation- Taking in of air rich in oxygen is called inhalation.
Exhalation- Giving out of air rich in carbon dioxide is called exhalation.
b) Exchange of gases takes place through the stomata present in the leaves.
Roots take in oxygen from the air spaces present in the soil.
All the parts of the plant can breathe.
c) If the plant is overwatered the air spaces present in the soil gets filled with water and
the roots do not get the air to breathe and they die.

(a) Why we cannot digest cellulose like the cattle do?

(b) Why do we get instant energy from glucose?
(c) What is tooth decay? Write any two ways of preventing tooth decay.
a) Cellulose is a complex carbohydrates which is broken down by the bacteria present in
the rumen of cattles which is not present in us.
b) Glucose is the end product in digestion of carbohydrate which is not broken down
further , hence it gives instant energy.
c) When the food in the mouth gets converted into acid it causes tooth decay.
Preventions- Not to put dirty fingers in the mouth.
To brush regularly especially at night.
