In 1869 Joseph Lister discovered the principle of antiseptic surgery, thus sharply decreasing the number of deaths
caused by infection. Lister used carbolic acid, a strong disinfectant which destroyed the bacteria. Lister was not
satisfied because the carbolic acid injured the tissue cells, and the wound healed slowly. Today milder chemicals called
