The multiport packer within the IntelliZone

Compact* modular zonal management system
provides annular isolation of each zone in a
multizone completion. The IntelliZone Compact
packer is manufactured in a variety of materials to
suit a wide range of production applications and
is hydraulically set, making it ideal for single-trip,
multizone completions.
For cased-hole applications, the packer is provided
from manufacturing as part of the system. For
deployment of the IntelliZone Compact system
openhole applications, a packerless unit is
delivered, and a swellable packer can be run
in conjunction with the system.

Operation

The IntelliZone Compact multiport packer is

a tubing-conveyed, hydraulically set packer.
It features five -in bypass ports for hydraulic
and/or electric control line feed-through in the
7-in version, and four 4-in bypass ports in the
512-in version.
The packer is conveyed to depth on the completion
tubing and set by applying tubing-to-annulus differential pressure. If required, packer fluid can be
circulated before the packer is set through one of
the IntelliZone Compact flow control valves.
To set the packer, the tubing must be isolated from
the annulus. This procedure requires closing of the
IntelliZone Compact valves or the use of a blanking plug, ball seat, valve, or other tubing blanking
device below the lowermost packer. Tubing pressure, directed through ports in the mandrel and
shell, energizes the setting pistons.
The IntelliZone Compact packer has a centrally
located hydraulic setting mechanism that prevents
mandrel movement when the packer is set. Setting
pressure can be adjusted at the wellsite before
installation.
Depending on the configuration chosen, there
are two methods for retrieving the packer: cut-torelease (CTR) and straight pull-to-release (SPR)
of the shear mechanism.

The IntelliZone Compact multiport packer
is designed and tested to meet the highest
industry standards for downhole packers
and has passed all requirements of the
ISO 14310 V3 standard.

In the cut-to-release version, the packers

internal mandrel is cut with an explosive or
mechanical cutter, allowing the slips to
disengage the casing and the element to relax.
In the straight pull-to-release version, the
tension on the tubing string is increased until
the shear value of the release pins is exceeded.
The packer shear-release mechanism can be
adjusted in the field before installation.
