Reflection for Learning Mathematics

using Math Song
Music and song are mostly related to kids world and something fun,
while mathematics is related to something afraid and annoying. Most of students
feel like they have nightmare before they have math course.
As a teacher we have to create something fun that can make students like
mathematics. Music and song are the alternate way. Children like to sing a song
and listening to music. We can use them to explain the material. Why not ? A
research team from Stanford University of Medicine showed that music engages
the areas of the brain involved with paying attention, making predictions and
updating the event in memory. Peak brain activity occurred during a short period
of silence between musical movementswhen seemingly nothing was
happening.
From the statement above, learning mathematics using music and song
can help children to focus to the material and gives good impact for their long
memory. Students also more interested to follow our learning process and the
material would be understood easily.
1. The Math Song (The Lazy Song-Bruno Mars) Parody
Today I dont feel like doing anything
I just wanna focus on Math
Domain and range and rate of change
It all makes me go insane
Today I dont feel like doing anything
Now lets sketch graphs
Try to figure out how to represent relations
Ordered pairs and tables are the destination
Learn about this function notation
Ill be graphing linear function
And interpreting relations
Did you know that
?
So in my Math class, Ill get good grades
Oh yes, I know, I know
I said it cause I know
Today I dont feel like doing anything
I just wanna focus on Math
Domain and range and rate of change
It all makes me go insane
Today I dont feel like doing anything

Now lets sketch graphs

Tomorrow Ill wake up
And do some more graphing
Gonna ace my test and stop all that slacking
And Im gonna out I did great!
Im gonna walk around
And show all my friends
I bet my old man will be so proud of me
Dont worry pops, Ill keep doing great
Oh yes I aced it, I aced it
I aced it cause I can
Today I dont feel like doing anything
I just wanna focus on Math
Domain and range and rate of change
It all makes me go insane
Today I dont feel like doing anything
Now lets sketch graphs
Oh I know all the definitions
And I know what a function is
One element of the domain goes with the range
There are different types of variable
The dependent and independent
The relationship between two sets of things
Today I dont feel like doing anything
I just wanna focus on Math
Domain and range and rate of change
It all makes me go insane
Today I dont feel like doing anything
Now lets sketch graphs
This song tells us about the key concept of Functions like the definition,
domain, range, independent and dependent variables. The creators create this
song very interesting. They use video clip that help us to understand and follow
the story. One value that we can get from this song is if we study hard we can get
what we want.

When a ball, bounces off of a wall

When you cook, from a recipe book
When you know, how much money you owe
Thats Mathematics
How much gold can you hold in an elephants ear?
When its noon on the moon, then what time is it here?
If you could count for a year
Would you get to infinity? Or somewhere in that vicinity?
When you choose, how much postage to use
When you know, whats the chance it will snow
When you bet, and you end up in debt
Oh try as you may, you just cant get away From Mathematics!
Andrew Wyles, Gently Smiles, Does his thing and voila!
QED we agree and we all shout hurrah!
As he confirms what Fermat, Jotted down in that margin, which couldve used
some enlarging
Tap your feet, keep in time to a beat
Of a song, while youre singing along
Harmonize, with the rest of the guys
Yes try as you may, you just cant get away
From mathematics!
The author wants to tell us that in our life we cant avoid mathematics.
Almost all of the activities in our daily life are related to the concept of
mathematics. Maybe we dont realize that when we counting the sheep before
we sleep, cooking from our recipe books, and knowing how much money we owe
are the concept of mathematics.
All of the cases in the song are the example that mathematics is very
useful, and theres no reason we can get away from mathematics.

How do you find the mode?
Just find the number that repeats most often
And the number is the mode.
If you find no number that repeats most often,
Then there is no mode.
Mean, Median, & Mode
Mean, Median, & Mode
Mean, Median, & Mode
This song tells us about how to find mean, median and mode.
The creator uses video clip to explain how to find them all.
To find the mean, the creator gives some number in the data set
A={1,8,6,4,6}
The first step, we have to add up all of the number in the data set
1+8+6+4+6=25
Then, divide the total by the number of items. Number of items in here is 5.
25/5=5
So, the average is 5.
To find the median, we have to arrange the numbers in order, from the lowest to
the highest values.
Since A={1,8,6,4,6} so we get 1,4,6,6,8
Because of total the numbers of set is odd so the median is the middle number.
It is 6.
If the total numbers of sets is even number the median is the average of two
middle numbers. For the example : B={1,6,4,6} we get 1,4,6,6
The median of the data is (4+6)/2=5
Mode is the number that repeats most often.
If A={1,8,6,4,6} The mode is 6 because it repeat twice and the other numbers just
appear only once.
If we cant find any number that repeats most often, we can conclude, the data
set has no mode.

Derivative
Derivative is a measure of how a function changes as its input changes. A
derivative can be thought of as how much one quantity is changing in response
to changes in some other quantity.

The key of derivative is finding the slope of the tangent at point P. You can
approximate this slope using a secant line through the point of tangency and a
second point the curve.

If (c,f(c)) is the point of tangency and (c+x,f(c+x)) is a second point on the

graph of f, the slope of the secant line through the two points is given by
substitution into the slope formula
m

f (c) f (c x) f (c) f (c x) f (c)

x
(c x) c
x

The right-hand side of this equation is a difference quotient. The denominator x

is the change in x, and the numerator y=f(c+x)-f(c) is the change in y

Integers
An integer is a whole number (not a fractional number) that can be positive,
negative, or zero.
Examples of integers are: -5, 1, 5, 8, 97, and 3,043.
Examples of numbers that are not integers are: -1.43, 1 3/4, 3.14, .09, and
5,643.1.
The set of integers, denoted Z, is formally defined as follows:
Z = {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...}

Solving Word Problem

Word problem is any mathematics exercise expressed as a hypothetical
situation explained in word. Word problem use mathematical skill that applied in
our daily life. For the example, when we go to the market, we choose so many
stuffs with many prices and discounts, then how much many we have to pay ?
We need mathematical skill to solve it
We will use the acronym of a BUCK to remember how to solve a word
problem. It just the easy way to remember. Well,
B= Box the question
U=Underline the information that we need
C=Circle the vocabulary
K=Knock out the unneeded information
Question :
At a shop on Times Square three I LOVE NY t-shirts sell every 10
minutes for $19.95 each. Every 45 minutes one Yangkees hat sells for $24.95.
The shop is open from 9am until 9pm everyday. How many t-shirt are sold in a
week ?
Box The question :
How many t-shirts are sold in a week ?
Underline the information we need:
3 t-shirts sold every 10 minutes
Store open from 9am-9pm

11

Reflection for Mathematics Song and VTR

2012

Circle the vocabulary that we need to understand:

Minutes
Every day
week
The unneeded information :
Every 45 minutes one Yangkees hat sells for $24.95. Because in this case,
we talk about t-shirt actually. Then, $24.95 because the question is not
about the cost, but how many t-shirt
Information that we need to solve the problem:
60 minutes in an hour
12 hours from 9am to 9pm
12x60=720 minutes per day
A t-shirt sold every 10 minutes, so we will divide 720/10 =72 per day
Because the question ask how many t-shirt are sold in a week, and there
are 7 days in a week, so we get 72x7=504
And the answer is 504
2.
Maria needs to know how much money to have with her when she goes
to her favorite shoe store. How much money should Maria bring to buy a pair of
shoes; if the original price is $80.00 and there is a discount of 20%. This sale will
last one week.
Don forget to use BUCK system
Box the question:
How much money should Maria bring?
Underline the information that we need:
a pair of shoes
original price is $80.00
20% discount
Circle the vocabulary that we need to understand:
the original price
the discount
Knock out un-needed information

12

Reflection for Mathematics Song and VTR

2012

The information needed to solve the problem:

original price is $80.00
20% discount, then we get the new price
Write 20% into decimal number
80.00 times 0.20 = $16.00
The original price is $80.00 then minus the discount of $16.00 is equal
$64.00.
So, Maria needs to bring at least $64.00 with her to the shoe store.

Solving Math problem by Mrs.Nancy Mathematics Teacher

Word problems can be very challenging to many students and some of
the basic things to think about when we trying to solve the word problem is to
figure out what about the facts and what is being outs for.
Here is an example :
A college student plans to spend $420 on books for one semester. He also
plans to spend $20 per week on pizza. The Fall semester is 18 weeks long. How
much will he need for books and pizza?
Basically, we have two facts here, that the student is going to spending
some money. He's spending $420 on books and $20 per week on pizza. In the
other hand the fall semester is 18 weeks long. So, we are going to take $20 he is
spending each week multiply by 18 as the number of weeks. So, we get $20x$18
= 360. We conclude that he is spending $360 on pizza for the semester and $420
on books for the semester. If we want to know how much he is going to spend
for both the books and pizza, then we need add $360 + $420 = $780.
He will need $780 for books and pizza.

SOLVING PUZZLES AND RIDDLES (OTHERWISE KNOWN AS

WORD PROBLEMS) USING 2 VARIABLES
1.

A first number plus twice a second number is 23. Twice the first number
plus the second number is 31. Find the number!
Solution:
Let 1st# is x and 2nd# is y
From the first sentence, we get first equation: x + 2y = 23.
Remember that 2nd# is y, while twice a second number it means we
multiply y by 2. So we get 2y.
And from the second sentence, we get the second equation is 2x + y = 31.
Remember that 1st# is x, while twice the first number it means we
multiply x by 2. So we get 2x.

13

Reflection for Mathematics Song and VTR

2012

We can use substitution or addition method to solve these equations.

I want to use the substitution method so I will take the first equation to
solve x
x+2y=23 then subtract by 2y for both sides, and I get x=23-2y
Substitution x into2x+y=31
So I will have 2(23-2y)+y=31
Using distribution we get new equation 46-4y+y=31
I have the same terms here, so I can simplify become -3y+46=31
Now, I will solve the y.
-3y+46=31 add both sides by 3y-31
So I will have 15=3y, then divide both side by 3.
Ill get y=5
Substitution y=5 into x=23-2y
x=23-2(5)
x=23-10
x=13
So now we get 2nd # is 5 and 1st # is 13
To make sure the answer, Ill check into the original equation.
1st equation:
x + 2y = 23
13 + 10 = 23
2nd equation:
2x + y = 31
26 + 5 = 31
Both of them are correct.
The numbers are 13 and 5.
2)

The sum of two numbers is 16. The first number plus 2 more than 3 times
the second equals 18. Find the numbers.
Solution:
Let 1st # is x and 2nd is y.
I have two equations here
1st equation is x + y = 16
2nd equation is x + (3y + 2) = 18
I can use substitution or addition method.
Since I want to solve it by substitution, I decide to simplify the second
equation become x + 3y = 16 to make it easier.
So, I have the new equations here
x + 3y = 16 and x + y = 16.
For the second equation, I will multiply both side by -1.
The second equation becomes x y = -16.
Simplify 2 equations:

14

Reflection for Mathematics Song and VTR

2012

x + 3y = 16
-x y = -16
2y = 0 (divided both sides by 2)
y=0
So now I get y = 0 and 16 for x.
Let's check to make sure that my answer is true.
1st equation:
x + y = 16
0 + 16 = 16
2nd equation:
x + (3y + 2) = 18
16 + 2 = 18
Both of the answers are correct.
The numbers are 16 and 0.

But actually there are many students that very difficult to remember
these 3 major definitions of trigonometric
From this video, the creator gives an easy way to remember using
acronym SOH-CAH-TOA
Lets check the SOH-CAH-TOA
SOH = Sine is Opposite over Hypotenuse
CAH = Cosine is Adjacent over Hypotenuse
TOA = Tangent is Opposite over Adjacent
Example :

Using the right triangle above,

If we want to find the Sine of
Remember that we have SOH
sine of theta = opp/hyp
The opposite side of angle is 4.
Hypotenuse is the long side of triangle.
Sine of theta = 4/5
How about if we want to find cosine ?
Dont forget that we have CAH.
Cosine of theta = adj/hyp
3 is the adjacent side.
Cosine of theta = 3/5.
What about tangent of theta?
The last we have TOA
Tangent of theta = opp/adj
The opposite side is 4.
tangent of theta = 4/3

Properties of Logarithm
The first property of logarithm that we must remember is the logarithm
base b of x is equal to y

This form is equivalent to b to the power of y is equal to x

We also have to know about the notation of logarithm.

logarithm base 10 of x is equal to logarithm of x (log x) without 10.

( )
logarithm base e of x is equal ln of x.
Problems:
1) Logarithm base 10 of 100 is equals to x.
Based on the first property that we have, let b=10, y=x, X=100.
The form is ten the power of x = 100.
So, ten squares is 100. And we get x = 2.

2) Logarithm base 2 of x is equal 3.

We have y=3, b=2, X=x.
We can rewrite in exponential form
2 to the power of 3 equal x
So x=8
3) Suppose we have logarithm base 7 of 1/49 = x.
We can rewrite in exponential form 7 to the power of x = 1/49.
We know that 1/49 is 7 to the power of -2
So if we write 7 to the power of x =7 to the power of -2
We can find that the value of x is -2.

b) Logarithm base b of M/N = logarithm base b of M logarithm base b of N.
c) Logarithm base b of X to the power of n is equal to n times logarithm base of
