PART IIA

Tasks
Week 1

Mechanical CAD/CAM
Introduction
The purpose of this project is to give you some experience with CAD/CAM/analysis
tools currently in use in industry and use them in some design case studies. The packages
tend to be large and have extensive feature sets covering a wide range of design/analysis
requirements to make them usable by a range of industries. This means that they require
a lot of practise before they can be used efficiently and may seem a bit daunting at first.
The packages which will be used in the project are:
Creo

Power-Mill
ABAQUS

A powerful 3-D modeller also has capabilities of doing dynamical simulations (using a sub-package called Mechanica) and
manufacturing, provided appropriate sub-packages licences exist
A manufacturing package (related to DUCT, a surface modeller
initially developed in this Department).
A finite element package with pre/post processor

Task for week 1:

The goal for the first week is to re-familiarise yourself with the basic commands of Creo.
You will do a number of introductory exercises, the initial stages of modelling a motorblower and then to start a more major design task - see below. The route to this goal is
up to your group to decide. but a suggestion is given below:
1. Follow through the example shown in the mini-manual or the Getting Started
telephone example (suggest 2 people/group do each task)
2. Combine as a team of 4 to generate a single model of the clamp assembly (e.g. 2
clamps + bolt + 1 nut using Relations and Family Tables to take 15mm, 25.4mm
and 32mm pipe. The respective clamping bolts and nuts being M4, M8 and M10.
See additional sheet (NB 4 Drawings - showing all the Clamps, Bolts, Nuts and
assemblies respectively must be generated)
3. Start to build the model of the motor-blower assembly (see separate handout for
instruction), sharing the work within the group of 4. Where dimensions are not
given use good engineering judgement/estimation.
4. As a group define a commonality strategy and the hardpoints for and model a
standard chassis and rolling gear for a car, e.g. track, wheelbase, width etc, and
then as teams of 2 generate two bodyshells, with similar design styles, as the start
of a series, e.g. hatchback and saloon, saloon and MPV, estate and pickup .....
First Report
As part of this project, you are required to produce three individual and three team
reports, the first two of these cover the work you carry out in the first week and must be
handed in by 5pm Thursday 15th May. It will count for 15 marks out of the 80 marks
positive credit available for the project.

The individual report should consist of :

A description of the process taken to generate the agreed specification for the
base car unit, including a note on the split of work within the team. Details
should also be given of specific design tasks undertaken by the individual.
A short note on the usefulness or not of family tables and relations in design
and production
A list of the drawings/models completed wholly or in part by yourself (NB
Also included in the team document)
The group report should consist of two parts
1. A table(s) identifying the team members responsible for the individual models
and copies of drawings associated with the exercises, e.g.
All introductory examples
All items related to the clamp task
Motor-Blower parts
2. A table(s) identifying the team members responsible for the individual models
and drawings associated with the car design and
A copy of all design sketches involved in the development of the car design.*
Details of the commonality strategy agreed specification hardpoints and
base car unit
Models+/drawings* of the chassis and running gear
Models+/drawings* of the two body shells
Models+/drawings* of the two assembled cars
A STL file of the finished car body shapes. (The STL files of the two concepts should be identically re-scaled to fit a plan envelope of 50mmx100mm)
+* N.B. A pdf or ps copy of all the drawings/model images + list of
responsibilities included in the 1st week report should be deposited in
a directory week1 pdfs, in the teams common area, by the submission
deadline
NB Marks are give for the quality of the 2D drawings and adherence to the
conventions given in BS8888 and taught in IA.
