MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT, POSTS & TELECOMMUNICATIONS OPENS
OFFICE IN KISMAYO
After years of conflict and war, the Interim Juba Administration in Southern
Somalia is finally winning hearts and minds of the locals with the revival of key
infrastructure in and around the southern port city of Kismayu.
Since taking over power, the local administration has had to layout the
infrastructure plan, establish a Central Bank, and revive the Presidential
palace and other key government installations.
The latest revival is the refurbished Ministry of Transport, Posts and
Telecommunications, which was officially opened on Wednesday, January 8
2015. This is a milestone for Kismayo as the local population can now access
vital government documents, licences and passes.
We as Jubba landers will be able to adhere to new rules and regulations of
the state such as acquisition of vehicle number plates for all vehicles, road
licenses and stickers. Gone are the days when we used to be ruled by militias
since we now have a fully functioning Ministry of Transport, Posts and
Communications and so people will have to apply for log books and driving
licenses, Ibrahim Hassan Abdi, Minister of Transport, Posts and
Telecommunication said.
Local drivers and vehicle owners have been given a 40-day ultimatum to
apply for a driving license and other vehicle passes and permits. This will go a
long way in professionalizing road transport by pushing out of the roads nonpermit holders.
The Interim Juba Administration is a Federal State in southern Somalia
formed on 15 May 2013 and brings together Middle Juba, Lower Juba and
Gedo regions under one Federal State recognized locally and internationally
in line with the federal constitution of Somalia.
