RELIEF

FOR G>VELO

As the key was turned on P.O. Box 167, Gwelo, Southern Rhodesia,

a letter was taken from among the many received almost every day and
opened very hurriedly, '//ith goose bumps all over me and butterflies

inside, 1 began reading, "Dear Ziden; Thank you so much for the prompt

THE

RESULTS

POWER OF THE GOSPEL

IN 181 BAPTISWlS

IN OCT. - NOV. - DEC.

The power of the Gospel penetrated the hearts and souls of 181
people in the GweIo-Sinoia-Urungwe areas causing them to give their
lives in obedience to Christ.

The Gospel caused others who had once

named Christ and then turned away to repent and become fa 1thfuI.

This

gospel was preached by Evangelist Miga, church members, and myself.

The men are quite willing to preach. Thus far in 1962 twelve hve already confessed Christ and have been baptized through the preaching o
Miga and Beni. Beni is a Mashoko Bible College student who
ho I idays with me, as he is commi t ted to the GweIo area and wiI I serve
under Brother Wendell

Freeman when he arrives.

In the December issue of this paper I announced the VBS materials

would be available upon request. Some of these have already been pre
pared, but it was then decided in Jan. by all the missionaries that
the May issue of the "RHODESIAN STORY" would carry a lesson from each
missionary which would make ten lessons. Other suggestions will also
be given for VBS. This way the whole field wiI I be represented, and
not just one area.
It will also provide a variety in stories. The
material will be received by you automatically so as a special order
to my forwarding agent will not be necessary.
May God continue to guide your efforts and give you the needed

blessing for the accompIishment of bringJng. gIory and honor to Him.

We thank you for what you have done in your Rhodesian outreach through

us, and we ask your continued prayers as we begin a new mission station
on the Urungwe Reserve.

As the rainy season continues, the African

We

certain^^enjoy the year-round growing season, but how we miss the

soft, white snow flakes.
VISITATION AND KINGDOM GROWTH

The power of the Gospel shed abroad to Rhodesia through^the pray

ers and support of you, our Christian brethren, we also rejoice to see
the growth of God's Kingdom. January was a busy month having made two
trips to the Urungwe Reserve, two visits to the Christians at Mangula
Mine, a visit to the Mhondoro Church, the Iron Mine Hill Church, and a

trip to Mashoko to get an interpreter. A total of twenty-four were

immersed into Christ during January. There were 19 adults and 5 young
people. Our visitation thus far in February (today is the 19th) has^

been hindered by Helen having strep throat, and I an attack of malaria.

I Said. "IT COULDN'T BE DONE"

The powerful Dodge Power Wagon met it's match in the bottomless

soil
soi I of Mashoko Mission.

After having gone through swift waters of

the Fue River which came a few inches over the top of the tires, and

having plowed through 64 miles of washed out road, which took a total
of 5^ hours, we arrived at Mashoko Mission; but, before we reached

the Pemberton's home, the Dodge was stuck.

It's powerful^ engine lay

helpless as both axles rested on the ground. There was just no bottom
to the soil. Lester Cooper and John Pemberton came to our assistance
and towed us out.

four-wheel drives.

At one time four vehicles were stuck,

including two

We enjoyed our short visit, and then returned with

a new interpreter, Patrick Sithole, to our home in Gwelo.

ACTIVITY AT A^ANGULA MINE

On January 21st, our family arrived at Mangula Mine and met with

twenty wonderful Christian people.

We left a school teacher and Miga,

the African evangelist, for the next week, and then I returned the next
Lord's Day with Donald Bel! to meet with about forty people. Donald
was visiting from Capetown, and his sister (a nurse at Mashoko) and
Pasty Cooper were in Gwelo with Helen and Karolyn.

After some car

trouble and a 78 mile dclour, diie to a washed out road, Donald and I

arrived at Mangula In time for the Lord's Supper and to preach. Ten
stepped forward at the invitation, most of which had been convicted by

the Holy Spirit during the past week, and were bap t i
in a nearby stream.

MISSION SITE PROGRESS

After passing two "green mamba"snakes we came to the mission site

where David Pruett, Sherman Pemberton, nd I had been just two weeks

previous picking out buiI ding sites. Now Nurse Paul ine Bel I and her
Brother Donald and I were again looking at the beautiful site which
lies in view of the scenic Mtirikati Mountain Range.

The government has now drilled a well on the site and have given
favorable indication that they will build a dam on the site if deemed
necessary. We will begin building as quickly as the rains cease.

February and thus far in March we have had several missionary visitors
to stop in and stay at least overnight. We have enjoyed the visits of
the Pruett, Kennedy, Grubbs, Pennington, and Lawyer families, as well
as Patsy Cooper, Pauline and Donald Bell. We have all enjoyed the
fresh vegetables which are still coming from our garden.
"BUSH BUGGY*" RECEIVES AN ADDITION!

The Dodge is now equipped with a simple rack made from used pipe
which extends over the cab and for the length of the truck.
It will
save having timber and etc. hauled from the nearest railway station
which is at Sinoia, 120 miles from the mission site.
V.B.S. MISSION MATERIAL

Each missionary in Rhodesia hs written a story which will com

prise a series of lessons to be used in V.B.S.

Ideas and helps will

also be provided to aid in making the mission story time more interest(ng
They will not have to be ordered, but will appear in the May
i ssue of "RHODESIAN STORY".
We hope youMI want to use these in VBS.
EVANGELIST MIGA TO UMVUAAA

As previously reported, the Umvuma Church had a good attendance,

until the influence of Satan entered in corrupting the children of God.
Church leaders and members were quarreling and back-biting and the
group soon was very small in attendance.
Immediately we had several meetings with the remaining leaders.
One leader repented and came back joining the remaining two. Now,
three of the five leaders were working together but the people still
were not coming.

The logical thing to do was find an Evangelist.

Only Miga, who

is working rn the Urungwe area, was available, so after an immediate

640 mile trip Miga was face to face with the problem. Of all Christ
ian workers I know, he would be the one who could help instill the
Word of God into the

lives of

this unrepentent people.

After only one

week of work, all but four of the members had repented and returned to

gather with the saints. Five new ones had repented and will be bap
tized on March 25th. Miga had spread the word in a wonderful way, and
will continue for a per
period of two more weeks befof-e .'eturninq home.

Against the "fiery darts of Satan" the Gospel takes it's power
of conviction into the hearts of mankind and destroys the infectious
wounds. The wounds which have caused men to turn away from God. Only
the Gospel can heal those wounds of the soul and bring it back into a
pure relationship with it's Maker.

Many are waiting for that healing power to be preached to them,

and they eagerly accept the Christ of Calavary. SIXTY-FOUR have
accepted Christ since our

last report.

Only by the grace of God and the loving kindness of many of you.
His children, has witness been made to these people. May God be
praised, and may you be blessed for your efforts both at home and
abroad. We give our thanks to God for you who have been willing to
make the field of Rhodesia a reality in my fami Iy's Iife. How won
derful it is to have Christian friends who stand up for Christ by
your Christian witness in the area you live, and are also concerned
about the eternal destiny of ALL NATIONS; Concerned enough to help
sow the Precious Seed of Life in the many different fields of the
world. May God bless you each in such a way that through those bless-

ings your works may be seen at home and abroad, and as a result bring
men the world around to glorify God.
Yours for a Christian world.

Greetings in the Name of Christ Jesus,

Since Ziden's many activities have been scattered over a 30,000 sq. mile area,
we find it rather difficult to get the reports to him at the proper place at the de
sired time for him to include it on the stencil before sending it to us here at Lowell
therefore, we will list the contributors for the month of July and make a few addi
tions to the information that Ziden has already sent. I am certain that when the
Wendell Freemans arrive in Gwelo and Helen, Ziden, Karolyn, and Tommy are all together
on the mission site that this difficulty can be overcome.

A special thank you goes to our younger people for their splendid Vacation Bible

July. These, along with a special "Tractor-truck Fund" offering of $433.00, brought
our receipts to a grand total of $1563.35. Truly God is answering prayers as the

SLIDE PROGRAM DELAYED

Perhaps some of you have been wondering what has happened to the new slide pro
gram which was promised in Lhe last newsletter. Recent word from Ziden revealed that
one roll of film did not turn out as he had anticipated; however, he has taken more
pictures and expects to have a new set in the near future.
CHANGES OF ADDRESS

We wish to thank those who have taken time from their busy activities of moving

to drop us a line and send their change of address.

It costs our mission a dime

VISITORS WELCOMED!

We were most happy to have Brother and Sister Cameron in our home recently and
were thrilled with the movie film that he showed and with the information which he

gave concerning the work in Southern Rhodesia.

Dear Friends in Christ:

The past six weeks have been full and running

over with new experiences and exciting events.

We are

sorry for the delay In writing to you and we hope you'll forgive us this month. We'd
like to start about 6 weeks ago telling you about our activity.

I believe Helen

could best tell about i t all.

After having spent several days with the Freenans while Ziden and Wendell
visited the churches in the Gwelo area, acquainting Wendell with the people of the

area^ we left to make our permanent residence at Chidamoyo with the whole family to
gether once again. Karolyn and her daddy led the procession In the Dodge, loaded to
the hilt and pulling the caravan. Tommy' and 1 followed in the car. When we arrived

at Karoi Karol3n3 was running a temperature and we were all tired from our trip. We ^
decided it would be best if the children and I would remain in Karoi while Ziden tpot.

the Dodge loaded into the mission'62 miles out in the Native area and then return to
Gwelo for the remainder of our belongings. He got back late Saturday night so we
left for Chidamoyo Sunday morning.

When we arrived at Chidamoyo Che people were just gathering for the Church

services so we had a grand reception. Everyone was anxious to welcome us and to see
the new white baby. Congratulations were extended and thanks and praise given to. Go'i
for the new baby Boy.

Quite a number of children gathered to watch as our things were unloaded.

Our manner of living is new to the people here and they are eager to be eyewitnessee
For awhile, at least, we will be living in a glass house so to speak. In fact,
Ziden went outside to close the caravan windows the. first night, an old gentleman
standing looking in.

The thing that really drew attention Jihd suspicion was our new gasoline
washing machine from America. Several eyed it with wonder as Ziden uncrated and as
sembled it.

Since we have nowhere inside to do the washing we set it outside and dc

the laundry there.

The noise of the motor attracted several passers-by, as v-ell ao

several of our workers who had never seen .such a thing.

They all asked Cecilia, the

girl who helps me, many questions*. They could not understand how it could wash all
by itself.

I have had my first meeting with the church ladies at the mission. We en
joyed singing and praying together and I gave them a flannelgraph lesson which was
another new thing for them to witness. The evangelist's wife asked if she and all
the other ladies might come to see the new "clii'iomana" (little boy) on that day. Af
ter the meeting we took him out in his btiggy for th'?:n to see.
they presented him with gifts, of

It is very, very hot at our new home.

This month is commonly called sui

cide month because of the intense heat as it builds up for the rains next month.

Karolyn and Tommy find it rather difficult to sleep In the heat but will soon become
accustomed to it.

We are all happy to be at our new home even though it will be some

time yet before we have a complete house and the convenience of running water near
by. We trust that we shall be able to accomplish all the things for the Lord that we
have the desire to accomplish His Will.

Helen will be writing more later, but libw on behalf of the whole family I'd

like to thank you for all your fine letters, prayef^, and support; We strive to give
witness to our Master in every possible way, and tieyor cease to thdnk Him for you who

are making it possible for us to do so in Soiitheifn khodesid. People continue to re

spond in a matvelous way to the power of the Gospel and we continue to be thrilled
with the- challenge of each day. As we press on, laying the foundation for a solid,
indigenous church, among a primitive thinking people steeped in superstition, we ask

your continued prayers. May dod grant you each grace and peace for each day as you
labor for Him both at home and abroad.

Because of the Risen Lord,

Ziden, Helen, Karolyn, and Tommy

Dear Friends in Christ:

Greetings in the name of Christ from Southern

into full action, crossing ditches and plowing through where no other^truck in tne

area can go. The grass along with all other vegetation has now placed a beautiful
green velvet layer across the Mtilikati Mountain Range.* It is hard to realize that
this special season set aside by the world to celebrate the birth of Christ is ap

proaching. We give emphasis to the birth of Christ all the year around in this prim-

itive area as this is the most important message to those who have never heard* Most

people have heard of Christianity but we find a few who know nothing of the Rood
tidings of great joy" which was announced to the world maniy

continues to penetrate the hearts of mankind brinjging reconciliation between^God a^

man* The joy of being at peace with God can now be read on many faces around

mission and how thankful we are for the power of the Gospel working among the

people. Miga, the Church of Christ evangelist living on the mission, continues no
announce where ever he goes about the Light which came from heaven to be seen y
men everywhere. People see that light and because of being ashamed of their sin,
turn toward God.

Developments at Chidamoyo

Building continues through the rain and our 5 ton truck is about all that

is stopped as the hill sides from where foundation stone is taken become too a c

go up and across. The rivers from where we had hauled river sand are now flowing

with water, but we had hauled many loads to carry us throilFgh the rainy season*

The Christian Day School is taking shape as the foun^tions Me finished

and the bricks begin to rise up making the walls. How shrilled we wiiyhe when it i

finished and the children come to be taught and to hear the W^rd^of God. With Chrl;>
tian teachers the way of Christian living will be seen by the Scholars Md the teac
ing will be from the Word of God alone, without creed and denominational prejudice*
Three rohdovals have now been completed for the workersto live in and our.

home is also complete with all the pluinbing, etc. It Is. good to be in our homeis temporary, and how thankful we are that it was finished before the heavy rains

Road construction is now on our list and the gravel has already been dug for hauling*

This week 1*11 lay out the roads and gravel will be hauled. Since jge were stopped
from all building except on the ischobl in order to get. ifc. finished in time for the
opening in January, our storerbcmi' add main office buildingscombination has stopped
also our permanent home. We hope to continue other building in-February*

money, but In the long run it will be cheaper. Even though some work has been done,
we are waiting for the quotations to come in ftom the suppliers. The water system
when completed will save time and wear and tear on the Dodge, so we are anxious to
see it done and in full operation.

word she is saying except a few Shona words which she now says to them.
Your prayers and support are a continual blessing to us and we give our
thanks to God for you who are so faithful with your encouragement, especially for

prayers and letters.

focal point of all activities. "To Him be glory both now and forever more."
