Original Story
My original script told the story of a rubber chicken's journey back to a nest of plastic
eggs. It took place inside a joke shop and was born out of a random selection of the
words; contortionist, joke shop and egg. With the freedom to move away from the
restrictions of these three words, I decided to change my story. Keeping the journey
aspect in mind, I wanted to develop the plot around the character's need for love and a
sense of belonging. I also decided to change the environment from a joke shop to a toy
shop, as I felt that this would allow me more options for other characters and props.

Character Turnaround
Tis is my fnal design for the rubber
chicken, taken from my original
year 1 project. I will be using his
design as the starting point to
designing the other characters and
environment, keeping within the
same style.

Influences - Susie
Susie, the child who rescues the rubber chicken, is alone just like the toy. She doesn't ft
in with other girls who have perfect hair and play with fashion dolls. When she
stumbles upon the rubber chicken, she loves him because he is as unique as she is.

I wasn't happy with the way the shoulder was behaving afer skinning, so I decided to use corrective
blend shapes to fx it. As blend shapes only work in one axis, I frst had to create a tracking object,
fxed along a plane. Tis object was then constrained to the shoulder joint. As shown above, when
the shoulder lifs, the tracking object moves across the plane. Once this is in place, set driven keys
can be used to turn blend shapes on when the object reaches a point on the plane.
To create the parallel blend shapes, I duplicated the original mesh when it was in the problematic
position. By moving the vertices of the duplicate, I created the desired shape. I repeated this process
for each movement of the shoulder. As I was using parallel blend shapes, I created a positive and
negative shape for each movement. Once these blend shapes were plugged in, and set driven keys
applied, the shoulder had a much more believable shape and motion.
To correct the opening of the beak, I once again used blends shapes. Tis time I was only concerned
with the movement up and down, so the tracking plane didn't need to be as large. Unlike with the
shoulder however, for the beak I used a Front of Chain blend shape.
