Designer Babies

Designer babies is a term which use to show the program to design the baby by
genetic engineering combined with in vitro fertilisation to ensure the presence or absence of
particular genes or characteristics. Animal modification such as cloning caused some scientist
think to do the same thing to baby with program designer babies. In designer babies, parents
can design their baby such as their skin colour, the shape and the colour of eyes even their
hair. Designer babies program has the purpose to increase intelligence and quality of
individual physical. On the other hand the program of designer babies create pro and contra
between many people . Some people think that designer babies can create the benefits for the
development of people but some people also think that designer babies can create many
problem such as disease in that people.
A 2012 article by Carolyn Abraham in The Globe and Mail stated that "Recent
breakthroughs have made it possible to scan every chromosome in a single embryonic cell, to
test for genes involved in hundreds of 'conditions,' some of which are clearly life-threatening
while others are less dramatic and less certain". There is already a "microchip that can test a
remarkable 1,500 genetic traits at once, including heart disease, seasonal affective disorder,
obesity, athletic ability, hair and eye colour, height, susceptibility to alcohol and nicotine
addictions, lactose intolerance and one of several genes linked to intelligence. This particular
gene has been shown to result in a seven-point IQ gain if a baby is also breast-fed". It is still
difficult to get enough DNA for such extensive testing but the chip designer thinks this
technical problem will be solved soon.
Some people who agree with the program of designer babies think that designer
babies has some benefits for the development of people. They think that designer babies can
increase the quality of people, physically or intelligences. According to Dr Jeff Steinburg,
Director of the Los Angeles Fertility Institute, who played a major role in the world's first test
tube baby in 1978, states that by using preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), parents can
choose the gender, eye, skin and hair color of the baby. Various other physical traits such as
intelligence, beauty, height, stopping a propensity towards obesity, freedom from mental
illnesses, athletic ability, etc. can be also determined. He went on to say that this service is
available solely to couples seeking IVF. Moreover, the price for each baby is $15000 to
$18,000.
On the other hand the implementation of the program designer babies create
controversial. Some people think that designer babies break the religious norm and can create
many kinds of disease moreover the baby in the designer babies program have genetic
defects. The National Director of Christian Voice, Stephen Green said, "The objection to the
idea of designer babies is that it divorces procreation from the act of sexual congress, and

there's a real sense in which it is playing God." Critics point out that the level of biodiversity
in the human race will plummet, which can result in long-term disaster.
So, designer babies program create the debate between people. Some people agree
with that program because can increase the quality of people but some people disagree with
that program because it can create genetic defects and it break the religious norm.
