The GMAT
A lot of people get a little nervous before taking tests, but the Graduate Management
Admission Test (GMAT) is one examination you dont want to put off.
1.1
Introduction
The GMAT exam is a standardized assessment, delivered in English, that helps
business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in
business and management.
By taking the GMAT exam, you have a better chance of being targeted b y
business schools that are a good match for youand learning more about their
programs and admissions processes. You can help them find you b y creating an
mba.com profile and opting in to being contacted by schools.
Schools use the test as one predictor of academic performance in an MBA
program or in other graduate management programs.

Preparation is Everything
Most GMAT test takers start preparing about 3 to 6 months before the actual test
date. Think about how you can best prepare, given your discipline, motivation,
and personal preference:

Self study
One-on-one tutoring

2.
The GMAT exam consists of three main parts, the Analytical Writing
Assessment, the Quantitative section, and the Verbal section.
You have three and a half hours in which to take the GMAT exam, but plan for a
total time of approximately four hours.
2.2
The GMAT exam begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The
AWA consists of two separate writing tasksAnalysis of an Issue and Analysis of
an Argument. You are allowed 30 minutes to complete each one.
2.3
Quantitative Section
Following an optional break, you then begin with the Quantitative Section of the
GMAT exam. This section contains 37 multiple-choice questions of two question
typesData Sufficiency and Problem Solving. You are allowed a maximum of
75 minutes to complete the entire section.
2.4
Verbal Section
Computer-Adaptive Format
Each of the first two sections consists of an analytical writing task; the remaining
two sections (Quantitative and Verbal) consist of multiple-choice questions
delivered in a computer-adaptive format. Questions in these sections are
dynamically selected as you take the test; the multiple-choice questions will
adjust to your ability level, and your test will be unique.
2.6
For each multiple-choice section of the GMAT exam, there is a large pool of
potential questions ranging from a low to high level of difficulty. Each section of
the test starts with a question of moderate difficulty. If you answer the first
question correctly, the computer will usually give you a harder question. If you
answer the first question incorrectly, your next question will be easier. This
process will continue until you complete the section, at which point the computer
will have an accurate assessment of your ability level in that subject area.
Pacing is critical, as there is a severe penalty for not completing. Both the time
and number of questions that remain in the section are displayed on the screen
during the exam. There are 37 Quantitative questions and 41 Verbal questions. If a
question is too time-consuming or if you dont know the answer, make an
educated guess by first eliminating the answers you know to be wrong.
2.9
The questions in an adaptive test are weighted according to their difficulty and
other statistical properties, not according to their position in the test.
2.10
Every test contains trial multiple-choice questions being pretested for use in a real
exam. These questions are not identified and appear in different locations within
the test. You should, therefore, do your best on all questions. Answers to trial
questions are not counted in the scoring of your test.
3.
To take the GMAT exam, you must first select a test center. Each test center
operates on its own schedule and can accommodate varying numbers of test
takers throughout the day.
3.2
You may register for the test online, by phone, by mail, or by fax.
Available time slots change continuously based on capacity and ongoing
registration. You will find out which times are available at your chosen test center
when you register.

scores in the world more than 7,000 colleges, universities and
licensing agencies in more than 130 countries, to be exact.
And, with more than 4,500 test centers worldwide, taking the test is
convenient and easy.
6.1.2
The TOEFL iBT measures how well you read, listen, speak and write in
English and use these skills together in the university classroom. For
example, you might read a passage or listen to a lecture, and then write or
speak about what you learned.
6.1.3
6.1.4
No matter where in the world you want to study, the TOEFL test can
help get you there. You will be eligible for admission to virtually any
institution in the world including the top colleges and universities in
the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia and New Zealand. See TOEFL
Destination Directory (PDF).
The TOEFL test gives you more flexibility on when, where and how
often you can take the test, and more practice tools and feedback, than
any other English-language test in the world.
The TOEFL iBT measures skills in reading, listening, speaking and writing,
and requires you to combine 2 or more of these skills to respond to a
question. For example, you might read a passage or listen to a lecture in
English, and then write or speak your answers in English.
17
6.1.5
You can also review sample test questions to become more familiar with
how the TOEFL iBT is structured and formatted and what type of content it
contains.
6.1.6
You will also be able to answer questions and check your answers.
