Pasuram 24: AnRi ivvulagam aLandhaai aDi poTTRi...

A rare depiction of the Lord with the spear (vEl in Tamil) in His hand
One of the most eloquent pasurams in the Thiruppavai where Andal recalls
every limb of the Lord and many His divine leelas one by one in various
incarnations to sing His praises and to extol His glories. The Tamil word
pOTRi means to glorify, or all glory to you, similar to Jai ho in Hindi. The

Lord is first praised as Vamana, then as Rama, and His childhood pastimes as
baby Krishna (ShakaTaasura, Dhenukaasura, Govardhana-giri-dhaari) are
recalled. The spear in His arm kills not the enemies but enmity itself. Let us
always be able to serve You (yenRenDrum sevgamE eththi). Accept our
service and liberate us (paRai koLvaan). Here we are today, shower us with
Your compassion (irangElor) for the performance of our vows. The following

ANDAL'S THIRUPPAVAI PASURAM 24

FOR DAY 24 OF MARGAZHI, JAN 7, 2015
In today's Pasuram 24, Andal is found singing the glories of the Lord
eloquently and recalling many of His leelas as baby Krishna. After Pasuram 3
(Ongi ulagaLandha ...) this is one of the most eloquent pasurams.
Both pasuram 3 and 24 begin with the praise of the Lord as Vamana. In
Pasuram 24, many leelas of baby Krishna are described and Andal recalls
every limb of the Lord and praises Him as she recalls each of the leelas.
I have provided here a new reference for the translation and the English
transliteration (by a devotee named Anantha Sayana).

Also provided in the comment box is my humble compilation of the
commentaries by various acaryas and VaishNavite scholars for this divine and
eloquent pasuram.
Each line of pasuram 24 ends with pottRi which means to glorify. Let us
glorify says Andal. Glory to, says Andal.
1. Let us glorify Your feet (aDi pottRi) that were used to measure this
earth - a reference to the Vishwaroopam assumed by Vamana as He took
three strides promised by Maharaja Bali.
2. Let us glorify Your valor (thiRaL pottRi) that vanquished the demon
whom You sought by walking and traveling southward, a reference to
the slaying of Ravana, by Rama, in the southern kingdom of Lanka.
3. Let us glorify Your fame (pugazh pottRi) acquired when as a baby You
just gave a kick and shattered the demon who appeared as cart to kill
You (at Kamsa's behest), a reference to Krishna's baala leela.
4. Glory be to Your lotus feet and anklets (kazhal pottRi) that kicked the
demon who appeared as a calf (kaNDRu, cow or bull, Dhenukaasura)
and killed him, another reference to baby Krishna's leelas.
5. Glory be to all Your great qualities (guNam pottRi) like compassion for
Your devotees that made You lift the (Govardhana) hill and hold it on
the tip of Your little finger, another reference to Krishna leela, the
famous Govardhana giri dhaari episode.
6. Glory be to Your spear (Vel pottRi) that wins over the enemies by
actually destroying their enmity itself (pagai kedukkum).
All those who serve You incessantly (enDRenDrum un sevagamE) will attain
liberation (moksha, aeththi parai koLvaan). The objective of attaining
moksha (liberation) which was outlined clearly in pasuram 1 (NaaraayaNanE
namakkE paRai tharuvaan) is being re-iterated here.
In the final line Andal says, "You figure out why we are here today to worship
You and sing Your glories and shower us with Your compassion." It is

interesting that Andal concludes this pasuram by referring to the spear as the
weapon in His hand instead of the other weapons like Chakra, gadha, shanka,
etc. Muruga, or Karthikeya, the son of Shiva and Parvati, also referred to as
Skanda, is worshipped widely in the Tamil country and His weapon is also the
vEl. Indeed, Krishna identifies Himself with Skanda, in chapter 10, verse 24, of
the Gita, Senaaneenaam aham Skandah among the commanders of armies, I
am Skanda, when He describes His vibhutis (glories, powers) to Arjuna.

Sendranguth thennilangai chettray ! thirall pottri
Pondrach chagadam udaithaai ! pugazh pottri
Kandru kunila verindhaay! Kazhal pottri
Kundruk kudaiyai edutthay ! gunam pottri
Vendru pagai kedukkum nin kaiyyil vel pottri
Endrendrum un sevakame aethi parai kolvaan
Indru yaam vandhom irangelor empavai.
The Lord has woken up, is majestically seated on His throne, Sri Andal and he
band of girls are having their eyeful of the lord, standing in front of Him finally
and what does she do ? Does she go ahead and list her demands of boons ?
No wonder stuck by the glory and beauty of the Lord, she starts singing His
praise; this 24th verse is a wonderful verse that is fully devoted to
rhythmically singing the Lords praise referring tohis various victories.
Once you measured the whole world! Praise to thee and your feet
You went down south to Lanka and destroyed the demon there. Praise thee
valour! You destroyed a demon who came in the form of a cart! Praise your
fame. In one stroke you vanquished two demons in the form of a calf ! Praise
to thee. You picked up a hillock to protect your people from the rain! Praise
your kindness. Praise to the sharp spear in your hands that kills your enemies.
