OCEAN GATE Mayor Paul J. Kennedy, who presides
over one of Ocean Countys tiniest towns, has positioned himself to become one of its highest-paid elected
officials.
Amid the holiday hubbub between Christmas and
New Years, the Borough Council voted to boost the salary range for mayor to a maximum of $75,000, up from
$5,000. In 2014, Kennedy claimed no salary as mayor,
but collected stipends for other jobs in the municipality totaling some $50,000.
He stands to receive even more than that in 2015.
The compensation ordinance, adopted in a 4-2 vote
Dec. 30, also set forth salary ranges for 44 other salaried positions and 20 additional jobs paid at an hourly
rate, many including pay increases. It was the second
time in 2014 that the council adjusted the local salary
guide.
At present, $75,000 is the salary of the highest-paid,

Long Branch man, convicted decades ago of sexually assaulting a

17-year-old girl in the city, has always maintained his innocence. Although Dion Harrell, 48, has been out of prison for about 17 years,
after serving four years of an eight-year prison term, he still wants to
clear his name. But the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office is

blocking Harrells attempt to have DNA from the 1988 crime analyzed to prove one way

or another whether he is the man who committed the sexual assault.

TUCKERTON Holly Austin Smith thought she was

running away from her Tuckerton home to a better life.

She found, instead, a life of forced prostitution on the
streets of Atlantic City.
She was 14 years old in 1992 when she ran away from
her family, from a future at Pinelands Regional High
School that frightened her, and from friends who bullied her. During the summer between the eighth and
ninth grades, Smith met a man in his early 30s at the

victims who are primarily women

and children.
