The Acrobi .al stability of glucose--fructose syrups (22-26% alkali

isor:orized) was evaluated . Dilute syrups (22% solids) were adjusted to
pH's 4 .5, 4 .7, 5 .0 and 5 .2, concentrated to 69-70% solids, inoculated with
an xerophil .ic fungi (M--2) and incubated at 25° C . Growth was measured
e,npirically by visual examination for formation of an mycelia mat . No
pH effect was observed between 38-66% solids ; growth was obtained after
13 and : 0 days in syrups of 38-54% solids and 56-66% solids, respect ive .ly .
I'owever., a pH effect was noted in the 67-70% solids syrups after 30 days,
there was no growth at pH 5 .2, slight growth at pH 5 .0 and good growth at
pH's 4 .5 and 4 .7 . The bactericidal or bacteriostatic effects at 30 and
55° C . of these glucose-fructose syrups with various microorganisms
(S . F. . coli_, S . rouxi-i, etc .) are under investigati_on .

The effect of crude xylose from bagasse (Yfanstiehl .) on the growth

and glucose-isomerase activity of Ar-throbacter RJR 2453--2- was evaluated
in shalce-flasks . A GLC analysis indicated that this sar :ple contained
69 .4% :_ylose and approximately 1% glucose, galactose and arabinose ;
further analyses are being performed to determine the exact content of
other ; :;ono- and disaccharides . Since an abbreviated technique (one-step
transfer) was used, the enzyme activity of controls is lower than normal .

The bagasse xylose yielded good cell growth, equal to the control of
approxir.lately 28-30 mg . of cells per ml . ; however, the enzymatic activity
was a third loss than the controls (Table I) after 69-70 hours at 30° C .
tti-ien the ba.gasse xylose content was increased to 3 and 4%, the enzymatic
activity was further reduced, while a reduction to 1 .5 and 1 .0% had little
effect on the isomerase activity . Combinations of regular and baSasse xylose
yielded lower enzyme activity than the equivalent concentration of regular
xylose . These data suggest that an inhibitory substanct'lis present in the
bagasse xylose . Filter sterilization of the bagasse xylose had no effect
on increasing the enzymatic activity of the Arthro_bacter cell . The
carbohydrate, metal ion, etc ., content of the hagasse xylose is under
i.nvestigation .

The effect of the bagasse xylose on glucose-isomerase activity in

recently isolated actinerrycetes (S-2 and others) and fungi is also being
studied .
