Fauzi’s head in the clouds with ideas for city’s future

Indah Setiawati , The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Thu, 01/14/2010 10:35 AM | City

Under the draft 2010-2030 spatial plan, Jakarta would look modern and young, even though its residents would
be getting older, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said.

The policy for residential development in the city would promote high rise buildings, while the quality of open
space would be maximized, he said.

“We want to control the population density. Of course we are directing [residential development] to high rise
buildings. All things that will improve the quality of open space will be prioritized — even a small open spaces
should be high quality,” Fauzi said Wednesday.

The Citizens Coalition for Jakarta 2030 have criticized the draft, claiming its stance on high rise buildings does
not set strict rules for open space provisions in high rise developments. Coalition member Suryono
Herlambang said that if it was not adjusted the draft would lead to a continuation of what is happening already,
whereby developers do not set aside sufficient open space or water retention facilities.

Fauzi said city officials had discussed the fact that houses that were too big and spacious would have to be
constructed on the city’s outskirts because only a small number of people could own and occupy them.

Jakarta Regional Planning (Bapeda) chief Nurfakih Wirawan — whose office formulated the spatial plan draft —
said the draft was made with the belief that Jakarta would remain the capital for the next 20 years.

“Jakarta will still be the business center. We will improve transportation access to facilitate business matters,
for example by providing easier access to the airport,” he said.

The administration has drafted plans for a transit-oriented transportation development, and special areas
providing high accessibility for public transportation and other activities, in efforts to utilize available land more
effectively.

The draft policy was established after evaluating the previous 20-year spatial plan, Nurfakih said.

Nurfakih cited an example of bad planning from the past in which a train station in Duri was not integrated with
other facilities, creating wasted of space.

Footpaths, he said, will also be taken into account as they should be made available at least within a 400-meter
radius around transit hubs. What's On

Previously, the coalition had criticized the administration for its lack of public consultation and
participation in the formulation of the draft. City officials had claimed they held focus group discussions as a Cap Gomeh Festival
