History of Hip-Hop

Contemporary R&B, also know as simply R&B is a music genre that

combines with elements of funk, soul and hip-hop. Thus, this is a
catalyst of hip-hop being a sub genre of R&B. Hip Hop was founded in
the 1970s; it began as an underground urban movement. This
developed in the south of New York City, mostly during house
parties, street gatherings and break dancing. It quickly spread
through many other parts of New York, mostly amongst black African
American youth through the 1970s. Hip-hop started from many
origins such as funk, reggae, dancehall and disco.
However Hip Hop isnt just classified as Hip Hop it comes with many
sub genres. A sub genre is a sub division of a genre, in this case music.
Examples of this would be Alternative hip-hop, freestyle rap and
Hard-core hip-hop. Alternative hip-hop often refers to hip-hop
groups that tend not to conform to the conventions of Hip Hop. In my
magazine I plan to conform to the conventions of a hip hop magazine
with some sub genres. Examples of this would be the portrayal of
women; they are generally portrayed to be sexy and slightly
promiscuous. Another convention of hip-hop magazines are that men
are generally portrayed as masculine and usually conforms to the
black African American ethnicity.
Hip-hop magazines are normally aimed at one sector of the audience.
The target audience of hip-hop is generally young adults, as this
genre is most popular amongst the younger generation. On the other
hand, hip-hop was founded a while ago therefore it could also appeal
the older generation as well.
The media kits purpose is to show the philosophy behind the
magazine media kit serves many functions. One of these being
promoting the launch of the company if new, promoting the interests
of the magazine and what the magazine hopes to achieve. Vibe
magazine has a similar approach, they vaguely mention the genre of
the magazine be urban and hip-hop music. It also includes the target
audience by briefly mentioning that its aimed at people between the
ages of 18 34. Interestingly its also mentioned that its directed for
people who are aspirational, suggesting that the magazine vibe
appeals mainly to young black people who have ambition and want
to enjoy reading the magazine, instead it being picture dominated.

The XXL magazine media kit is similar to the magazine Vibe. This is
because the magazine XXL wants to promote a mature, real and
intelligent approach to Hip-hop, emphasising the music and lifestyle
of heart and soul culture, similar to Vibe. It also has a target audience
of young adults, however research shows that the main readers of
XXL are male readers but there is still a large female audience Thus,
this may be an indication that I need to aim my magazine towards
both males and females, as the genre of my magazine is mainly for
males, however I cannot exclude females.
