Blizzard Bags ready for St. Johns students

BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS Old Man Winter had reared his head
again this year with city and parochial schools already
marking four calamity days. To help avoid scheduling
make-up days, St. Johns Elementary and High School
students have three days of Blizzard Bags for students to
complete if more than five days are missed.
The Blizzard Bags are full of assignments from each
teacher for a missed school day, Elementary Principal
Nathan Stant explained. The student will get those on
the next day back in the classroom and have two weeks to
complete the work and when they do, they will be credited
for the day for attendance and for the assignments.
The state allows 18 days worth of hours that can be
missed but St. Johns continues to allow only five calamity days before make-up days or Blizzard Bags are insti-

tuted.
We know the state minimum for elementary students
is around 1,001 hours but we dont want to be minimum,
Stant said. We dont want to have less instruction time
than in the past.
High School Principal Adam Lee agrees.
We value our education days with kids in the classroom with teachers, Lee said. The Blizzard Bags are
great for three days but after that, we need the students
and teachers together.

The pair said most of the Blizzard Bags are ready to go

the day before inclement weather is expected.
Teachers need to be aware of bad weather and have
that next days assignments ready to go if needed, Stant
said. You really cant just make up the bags ahead of
time because the assignments are supposed to be for the
day missed.
Both administrators said last year was a practice year
for the Blizzard Bags.
Teachers, students and parents seemed very receptive
to the idea, Lee said. Once June rolls around, students
are ready to have that time off and if we can end the year
on schedule, thats great.
Stant echoed Lees experience.
We got a pretty good response and we felt it was
worth more than instruction than make-up days in June
because you just dont have the students full attention at
end of the school when the weather is nice, he said.

LIMA The Lima
Symphony Orchestra is
joining the fight against
heart disease by aligning
with the American Heart
Association in its Go Red
for Women campaign.
In an effort to increase
awareness about heart
disease in women, the LSO is sponsoring a Go Red
photo at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention
Center at noon on Jan. 27. Photographer Michael Ayers
will take the photograph promptly at 12:15 p.m.
Please join our cause and be in our photo! We ask that
you wear red (not pink, not burgundy, not orange, but
true heart-healthy American flag red). Anyone not having
a red dress is asked to wear a black bottom. All clothes
should be solid colors and not patterned.
The Lima Symphony Orchestra will use the photograph in conjunction with its Music of the Heart concert
on Feb. 14. The February concert has long been underwritten by Lima Memorial Health System and St. Ritas
Medical Center. We appreciate their legacy of generous
support and applaud them in their efforts to raise awareness, treat and cure the number one cause of death in
American women.
Please help us spread the word by joining us on Jan. 27
and by inviting female friends to do the same.

Baeza
BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS Kelly Baeza is no stranger
to lifes struggles. Shes been through addiction, depression, the loss of a son and divorce.
While trying to put her life back together, she
attended Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
I would sit there and listen to everyones
story and when they got to the part of how they
were coping, if they mentioned God or Jesus,

God was a huge part of my recovery and I

wanted to share that. Then I found Celebrate
Recovery. Its a Christian-based program.
Baeza will bring Celebrate Recovery
to Delphos beginning at 2 p.m. Jan. 25 at
Delphos Wesleyan Church as a team leader.
This isnt a church function; the meetings
are open to the entire community and surrounding areas, Baeza stressed. Its a safe
place for people who are struggling or trying
to overcome lifes hurts, hang ups and habits. It includes but isnt limited to addiction,
depression, abuse, sexual abuse, self-esteem
issues, eating disorders and grief. If youre
hurting, we can help.
The program is confidential and anonymity
is required.
I believe God puts the right people in
the right place. Being around people who are
suffering the same hurts brings understanding
and even wisdom, Baeza said. Someone
may have the same story as you but they had
a different outcome because they tried something you havent thought of.
Baeza found this to be true for herself.
I have found great healing through this
program, she said. I cant tell you how it
works I just know that it does.
Meetings will be held at 2 p.m. on Sundays
with a childrens program and childcare provided.

Ohio launches drug

prevention effort for businesses
COLUMBUS (AP) Ohio is launching a new drug prevention effort aimed at businesses concerned about substance
abuse among employees.
The "Start Talking Business Impact Zone" is a followup to a year-old program that encourages adults to talk to
children about drug use as part of Ohio's efforts to combat a
prescription painkiller addictions epidemic.
The update announced Thursday will help businesses
promote drug-free workplaces and wellness programs for

Accidental drug overdoses tied to prescription painkillers

We really appreciate
what Cooper Farms has
done for us, said George
Newton of St. Marys
Catholic Food Pantry. In
2014 we served almost
5,000 families and over
16,000 individuals.
The at-cost value of the
2014 donations totals over
$513,000.
As the Cooper Farms
team and family reflect on
the many people served by
these great organizations,
they are happy that they
are able to provide such
assistance to people in their
local communities.

DELPHOS Losing weight

and saving money are among the
popular resolutions people make
every year, but local nonprofit
agencies are hopeful that volunteering will also be on the list
for 2015.
Anita Lindeman, volunteer and events coordinator at
Community Health Professionals
(CHP) of Delphos, says volunteers are needed and the experience can be very rewarding.
We have both patient-related
and non-patient related options
available, Lindeman said.
Assignments can be short term
or ongoing.
Kathy Gasser has been a CHP
volunteer for three years.
I took early retirement and
I was used to working five days
a week, so I couldnt just sit
around all day, she said.
Gassers father had used home
health services from CHP, and
when she saw an article in the

and hospice agency. She also

volunteers with other community organizations and appreciates the flexible schedule CHP
provides.
Some of the tasks Gasser
helps with includes: checking
on patient Medicaid eligibility, assembling and organizing
patient charts, assisting with
events and flu shot clinics, and
making sure staffs forms and
charts are up-to-date
Gasser worked in an office,
is detail-oriented and has organizational skills. Her volunteer
position enables her to continue
utilizing those skills. She mostly
works alone, but says she has
enjoyed getting to know more
people through the experience.
Cindy Murray was also
employed in an office job before
being put on disability. Although
limited somewhat by her disability, she can put her skills to
work in a meaningful way as a
volunteer.
For the past couple years,

Murray comes in twice a week to

help with physician orders, organize files, log orders, grade aide
tests, answer phones and assist
with fundraising events.
Like Gasser, when Murray
was put on disability, she was
looking for something to fill the
hours. She too responded to an
article in the newspaper.
I am a people person and
I missed the interaction, she
said. Here, I get to meet and
work with some great people and
Ive learned a lot about all the
services that are provided to our
community.
Lindeman said she hopes
these volunteer examples will
inspire more people to volunteer.
We can find a job to meet
your skills and interests, she
said. There is no expense
involved. It will only cost you
some time, but the return on the
investment will be great.

becoming a volunteer by calling

The broken soul at the heart of Unbroken

4 The Herald

For decades, the Billy Graham

Evangelistic Associations World Wide
Pictures unit produced many films with
titles like Souls in Conflict, The Heart
is a Rebel, The Restless Ones and The
Prodigal.
Critics relentlessly noted the formula that
drove most of these films: The sins of the
main character would cause a crisis, then -somehow -- he would hear a Graham sermon
and be born again. Roll credits.
That was cinema. But the drama was real
in 1949 when a shattered sinner named
Louis Zamperini attended Grahams historic Canvas Cathedral crusade in Los
Angeles.
Come judgment day, warned the evangelist, they are going to pull down the screen
and they are going to shoot the moving picture of your life from the cradle to the grave,
and you are going to hear every thought that
was going on in your mind every minute of
the day ... and youre going to hear the words
that you said. And your own words, and your
own thoughts, and your own deeds, are going
to condemn you as you stand before God on
that day.
When Zamperini told his life story -- a
rebellious childhood, Olympic glory, then
the horrors of World War II, including 47
days adrift in the shark-infested Pacific, fol-

lowed by two hellish years in prison -- this
was the climactic scene. He had been soaking his nightmares in alcohol, and he was
facing divorce and obsessed with killing his
torturers.
Graham said: Here tonight, theres a
drowning man at the breaking point, someone lost in the sea of life. It took a sermon
or two, but Zamperini surrendered.
Thats what millions read in Unbroken,
the bestselling page-turner by Laura
Hillenbrand, but that scene isnt in Angelina
Jolies new Unbroken film. The director
has publicly said that Zamperini, who died
last summer at age 97, embraced her decision to skip the Christian specifics and offer a
message of universal faith and forgiveness.
Obviously, the Graham team disagreed
with her artistic choice.
The key to the whole story is that Louis

Zamperini was a broken man. ... But it wasnt

the Japanese who broke him. He broke
himself, said the Rev. Franklin Graham,
the eldest son of Billy and Ruth Graham.
He came back from the war and was trying
to find peace by seeking the things of this
world.
While he has chosen not to see her film,
Graham said it appears Jolie told a spectacular story, while ignoring its climactic chapters. Thus, the Graham team has released its
own film about Zamperini, including references to the years of testimonies he shared in
Graham crusades. The documentary, Louis
Zamperini: Captured by Grace, has been
posted at the BillyGraham.org website.
Were not talking about a Billy Graham
movie here, said Franklin Graham. Were
talking about real life and, most importantly,
what happened in this mans real life. All of
our lives are going to spiral down if we dont
grab a life rope. Thats what Louis Zamperini
did and his life was changed for eternity.
In particular, Graham said he wished that
Jolie had been willing to include the dramatic
episode in which, soon after his conversion,
Zamperini returned to Japan to forgive -- face
to face -- as many of his prison guards as
possible. You can just imagine that scene in
your mind. ... Its like she forgot the punch
line, he said.

The Jolie film does include references to spiritual crisis and prayer. A
self-professed agnostic, the superstar actress
and director told reporters at one press event:
If you were looking for symbolism and miracles in the film, you will see them. Thus,
during the movies sea ordeal, Zamperini
prays: If you get me through this, if you
answer my prayers, I swear, Ill dedicate my
whole life to you. Ill do whatever you want.
Please.
But in the Graham documentary, the real
man stressed that, at first, he didnt keep that
promise. The unbroken man, in reality, came
home spiritually broken.
Yes, I had a lot of great times, a lot of
great experience, a lot of escape from death,
but I still didnt like my life after the war. I
came home alive. God kept His promise. I
didnt keep mine, said Zamperini, five years
before his death. The heart of this story is
when I found Christ as my Savior. Thats the
heart of my whole life.

Washington Journalism Center at the Council
for Christian Colleges and Universities and

I have been writing these columns for

12 years now, which equates to multiple
generations of my own four-legged family
members. Writing is one of my greatest
passions, next to caring for pets and their
people. I took the opportunity to learn
journalism during my high school years,
but much to my fathers dismay, I chose
veterinary medicine for my lifelong career
instead.
One of the biggest challenges for journalists is repeatedly coming up with fresh
topics to write about. Or, as I like to
describe it, being inspired. My husband
and I have both realized over the years that
writing about what you have experienced,
observed and know is always easiest and
most entertaining.
Where is this leading? To my clients, of
course. They both inspire and provide me
with thought-provoking material to write
about every day and, admittedly, some
inspire me more than others.
Over the past 30 years, I have assisted multiple pets across The Rainbow
Bridge. Just when I think it cant get more
difficult for pet owners to let go, another
heart-wrenching experience comes along.
Such was the case of Kelly and Dave
Frost when they had to make the difficult
but necessary decision to say good-bye to
Jack, their beloved, kind-hearted Golden
Retriever, following a 16-month battle
with cancer.
Jack was infinitely blessed to be adopted by a family who loved him to the nth
degree and always provided him with the
best veterinary care possible. Kelly and
Dave also sent Jack to military school
(a.k.a. obedience training) to help him be
the best dog he could be. He was gifted
with a fellow Golden Retriever, Riley, to
remind him he was a dog, followed by two
lovely children to play with and watch over
as they grew. With a family he adored and
frequent trips to the lake, Jacks life truly
was golden.
I am forever inspired by how Kelly and
Dave consistently give careful consideration to what is best for all of their dogs
in their hour of need. So, when Jack was
diagnosed with multiple myeloma (cancer

results were numbers that became all too
familiar to them.
Gratefully, the Frosts experienced the joy
of Jacks cancer remission, then the fight
to maintain it with multiple changes in his
chemotherapy regimen. But, at all points
in time, they were ever mindful of what
was best for Jack, as well as the fact that
his battle would have to end. Being certain
that the fight was indeed over when the
time came was of utmost concern for them.
So when a final trip to Ohio State made it
clear that the end was near, Kelly and Dave
brought Jack home to be with him in his
final hour of need.

Third-period swoon
Blue Jay rally falls
short vs. Minster girls dooms Jefferson at Ada
By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

MINSTER St. Johns

committed 27 turnovers
Thursday night versus
Minster in Midwest Athletic
Conference girls basketball
action inside Minster Middle
School Gymnasium.
One would have
thought the Lady
Blue Jays were
going to get blown
out of the gym.
Instead, they
battled all the way
and were within three points
with 44 seconds left before
the Wildcats canned eight
straight free tosses in the final
33.5 seconds to salt away a
52-41 triumph.
We played with great
energy tonight and played
a very good team. Minster
is always well-coached and
they are talented, Jays mentor Dan J. Grothouse said.
When you play a good team
like this, when they give you
opportunities and we had
our share you have to
capitalize or they will.
In the opening period,
despite turning it over six
times as the Wildcats
applied a variety of fulland half-court pressures
and traps the Jays (6-7,
1-3 MAC) managed to hit
6-of-11 shots to Minsters
6-of-14 as Rachel Pohlman
(7 markers, 3 assists) and
Sydney Fischbach (8 markers, 7 boards) each scored
five in the canto. With five
lead changes in the stanza,
the Jays had their biggest
lead of four twice the last
at 14-10 on a fast break by
Pohlman at 42 ticks before
Mariah McKenzie hit 1-of-2
singles at 18.9 seconds and
a drive a second before the
horn to get within 14-13.
Minsters defense limited
the Jays to seven shots in
the second (4 makes), forcing five more errors. Still,

the Jays own tough manto-man didnt make things

easy for the Wildcats (10-2,
2-2), holding them to 2-of9 from the field. What kept
Minster afloat was 7-of-8
from the stripe (19-of-27 total
for 70.4%) as they took the
lead for good at 22-21 on
two singles by Logan Arnold
(11 points on 11-of-15 from
the line; 5 boards)
at 1:53. She hit two
more at 1:20 before
the Jays got within
24-23 at 1:08 on a
drive by Fischbach.
The hosts came
out quickly in the
third, scoring the first
six points and forcing seven
errors in the period. In fact,
the only basket the Jays made
was a 3-ball from the left
wing by Madilynn Schulte
at 3:20 (hitting 1-of-6 shots
as a team) and hit 3-of-4
free tosses (13-of-17 for the
night for 75.6%). McKenzies
single at 1:13 accounted for
the Widlcats 37-29 advatage
at the end of three periods.
It seemed that every time
the Jays made a move in
the fourth, Minster had the
answer, taking their biggest
lead at 42-33 on a layin by
McKenzie off a front-court
steal at 3:51. Slowly the Jays
rallied as they took advantage
of the charity stripe, hitting
5-of-6 free throws in the next
2:21, and when Lexie Hays
(12 counters) rainbowed a triple from the right wing at 44
ticks, they were within 44-41.
However, forced to foul (with
Fischbach and Schulte fouling out), Minster was perfect
from the line in the last halfminute and the Jays committed three costly errors.
Minster made plays down
the stretch and we didnt,
Grothouse added. Good
teams that are getting better
do that. We just arent quite
there yet; we have the potential to do so. We just seem to
wait for someone else to do it.
I just think if our girls can get
a mindset that its up to me

to make a play and then do it,

if one does, then another, then
another and it spreads.
In toto, St. Johns finished 12-of-28 from the field
(42.9%), including 3-of-8
downtown; with 26 boards
(7 offensive) as Jessica Geise
added five; and 20 fouls.
Overall, Minster ended
up 16-of-42 from the floor
(38.1%), including 1-of7 triples; with 26 caroms
(12 offensive) as Rosie
Westerbeck (12 counters) and
Ali Borgerding (10 points)
each had five; 12 miscues;
and 19 fouls.
In two periods of junior
varsity play, Minster (10-2)
grabbed a 23-14 triumph.
Lindsay Roetgerman led
the Wildcats with 10.
For the Jays (5-8), Maddie
Pohlman had five.
Minster
visits
Fort
Loramie Saturday.
The Jays host New
Knoxville Thursday.

Ada Herald Correspondent

ADA - Delphos Jefferson carefully built a 3-point halftime lead at Ada

Thursday night, then saw it disappear
quickly in a 56-45 Northwest Conference
girls basketball loss.
The Ada girls used a full-court press
and deadly 3-point shooting to reel off
16 unanswered points in the third quarter,
rallying from a 30-29 deficit to take a
commanding lead. The Lady Bulldogs
broke open the close game by hitting four
consecutive 3-point goals.
Ada outscored DJ 24-7 in the
third period as defensive pressure
led to some steals and the barrage
of treys.
We arent really a pressing
team but we had to do it to pick
up the pressure and intensity, explained
Ada head coach Bill Taflinger. The 24
points in the third quarter was definitely
the difference.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 16
in the final period before the Wildcats
scored the last five points to provide the
final margin.
Jefferson fell to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in
league play with the loss. Streaking Ada
improved to 9-3 and 2-1 in the NWC with
their sixth win in the last seven games.
Bulldog junior Sidney Faine gave the
hosts an 11-10 lead late in the opening
period with a right - trifecta. But Wildcat
senior guard Heather Pohlman swished a
left-corner triple to give DJ a 13-11 edge
after one period.
A coast-to-coast left-handed layup
by senior guard Brooke Culp gave the
visitors a 15-11 advantage to open the
second stanza. Ada senior Tori Wyss
canned a power layin, yet junior Wildcat
post Bailey Gorman converted a 3-point
play inside for an 18-13 edge. Alexis
Amburgey drained a trey for Ada and
they tied it 20-20 on an 18-footer from
the left corner by Wyss.
Senior Shelby Koenigs layup gave
DJ the lead back and Gorman banked in
a trey from the top of the key to build
a 25-20 lead with three minutes left
in the half. Bulldog sophomore Haley
Wyss splashed a trey yet Macy Wallace
swished a 17-footer from the left side for
Delphos. Ada junior Rachel Wildman followed in her own miss to cut the deficit to
28-25 at intermission.
Ada pulled in front 29-28 to start the
second half before Pohlmans driving

layin gave DJ its last lead 30-29. Then the

Bulldog press began to take its toll as it
quickened the tempo. Amburgey knocked
down a corner trey to ignite the decisive
16-0 flurry, followed by her pull-up shot
that rattled in. Wildman buried a rightwing trey, then Haley Wyss swished a left
corner triple for a 40-30 lead at the 3:49
mark. Faine made it three consecutive
trifectas by swishing one from the right
corner a minute later. Amburgey concluded the spurt with a fast-break layup for a
45-30 lead with 2:25 to go in the third.
A Gorman layin ended a 4-minute
Wildcat drought but the damage had
been done. Wildcat junior Tori
Black made a traditional 3-point
play inside to pull DJ within
14 points heading to the fourth
period.
Delphos outscored the
Bulldogs 10-7 in a deliberate
final quarter as Wallace drilled a rightwing trey and Culp added a conventional
3-point drive-and-harm. But it was not
nearly enough to overcome the 24-7 Ada
third-period outburst.
The Bulldogs nailed half of their eight
triples in the key quarter.
Pohlman, Gorman and Culp led
Jefferson with 10 points apiece.
Amburgey tallied 10 points and
Wildman contributed nine for Ada.
Tori Wyss scored 19 points to lead all
scorers and she became the eighth player
in program history to reach the 1,000point milestone for her career. She now
has 1,014 points.
Wyss scored the first six Bulldog
points and surpassed the barrier on a leftwing trey that tied it 6-6 with 4:24 left in
the first period.
Getting a thousand points shows how
consistent she has been, said Taflinger.
Tori isnt going to go out and get 30
but she will score 12 to 18 points every
night.
The Lady Wildcats won the reserve
game, 53-43. Devyn Carder led DJ with
18 points while Sarah Miller added 14.

Musketeer girls gain first

varsity victory of current season
BY DAVE BONINSEGNA
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com
FORT JENNINGS In sports, there
are games that you win ugly and then
there are those that are UGLY!
That is what the Fort Jennings
Lady Musketeers and Miller City Lady
Wildcats endured on Thursday evening
at The Fort.
The teams combined to turn the ball
over 59 times and each went on long
scoring streaks with the guests tallying
a 18-0 run in the first half in grabbing a
30-19 lead at the break.
In the end, it would be Fort Jennings
that would muster up a 25-7 second-half
stretch to come away with a 45-40 victory.
Haley Wittler drained 4 of 4 from the
line (Lauren Hill style) two to give the
Musketeers a 37-36 lead with 4:20 to go
and two more in the same fashion with
:38 left to lift the home team to a 44-40
advantage.
Kylie Jettinghoff led Jennings with
15 points, Erin Osting added 10 and
Jenna Calvelage contributed nine in the
win.
Tiffany Welty led all scorers for
Miller City with 16; Amanda Simon
added 10 for the Cats.
The first period the teams battled
back and forth; Christina Clippinger and
Simon exchanged 3s and Megan Niese
added her lone basket of the game from
beyond the arc to give the guests a 13-12
lead at the first stop.
Simon kept things going for Miller
City to start off the second period with
Welty contributing 13 of her game-high
points in the stanza as the visitors went
on a 18-0 run stretching across the two
quarters.
Welty drained a long-range shot
with 1:38 to go before the half to put
the Lady Cats up 30-13 and seemingly
put Miller City on cruise control. The
Musketeers hit the final five points of
the half to take a 30-19 deficit into the
lockerroom.
Adjustments were going to have to be
made if the home team were to get back

Lynch, Lacy carry load

into NFC title game
Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. The Seahawks Marshawn Lynch

and the Packers Eddie Lacy are known for being punishing
runners.
Their conduct in front of the cameras couldnt be any different.
Lynch isnt a talker, to put it
mildly. The affable Lacy can charm
reporters and teammates with an
easygoing personality.
Trying to tackle Lynch and Lacy
wont be easy for the defenses
when Green Bay visits Seattle on
Sunday in the NFC title game.
What are they like with the ball?
Lacy will take that question.
I mean personally, I dont know
him, I never met him or anything,
he said. But were both physical
backs. We dont care whos in front
Lynch
of us. When you come to hit us,
youve got to come youve got to
try your hardest to get us down.
Sure-handed tackles become of utmost importance.
Defenders will have to swarm to the ball to prevent the runner
from bouncing off a tackle and rumbling for extra yards.
It is Lynchs specialty.
Hes a dog his whole
demeanor, Seattle safety Earl
Thomas said. Hes a man amongst
boys out there.
One who had his fourth straight
season of at least 1,200 yards rushing. Lynch finished the regular season with 1,306 yards on 280 carries
and 13 scores.
The Seahawks led the league
in averaging 172.6 yards rushing
per game, with mobile quarterback
Russell Wilson also posing a threat
on the ground.
Lacy
Were kind of just reaping the
benefits of the philosophy but then
how the players go out and execute it, Seahawks offensive
coordinator Darrell Bevell said. We got as good of guy youd
ever want to hand it to with handing it to Marshawn.
Packers linebacker Julius Peppers, a 13-year veteran,
described Lynch as one of the hardest runners I think in football in my opinion. Very physical and violent runner.
It sounds a lot like trying to tackle Lacy.
Those guys are similar in the sense that you have to have
multiple defenders trying to get those guys down, Peppers
said.
Whereas Lynch and Wilson share top billing in the Seattle
attack, Lacy and his production can get overshadowed by
Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback is having an MVP-caliber
year, even after being slowed by a strained left calf.
The injury makes Lacy an even more important piece to
Green Bays offense. As evidence, Lacy was added to the injury report as a precaution on Thursday as a limited participant
because of a sore knee.
I was just being conservative, so I pulled him in about the
middle of practice, coach Mike McCarthy said on Thursday.
I think Eddie will be ready to go on Sunday. Just the coach
was nervous, all right?
The running game stalled in a 1-2 start, when Green Bay
played Seattle, the New York Jets and Detroit to open the season three of the top defenses against the run in the league.
The Packers were also a bit more conservative early on in
giving Lacy carries, while putting added emphasis on catching
passes out of the backfield.
He has turned into Green Bays third-leading receiver as a
check-down threat for Rodgers, while the production on the
ground has steadily increased behind an effective offensive
line.
Lacy finished with 1,139 yards on 246 carries with nine
touchdowns. Counting last weeks playoff win against Detroit,
Lacy is averaging 99 yards in his past seven games.
His ability to be a 3-down player is of primary importance
to us, McCarthy said. Hes breaking tackles, but were going
against an excellent tackling defense, so this will be a big challenge.
The Seahawks figured out Lacy in the 36-16 win over
Green Bay in the league opener in Seattle. Lacy was held to 12
carries for 34 yards before leaving the game with a concussion
following a hit from safety Kam Chancellor.
At least thats how it was reported in injury report.
Uh I remember it wasnt a concussion. It was got rung my
bell, Lacy said with a laugh to a gaggle of reporters. So I ran
into Kam! Thats what happened.
Notes: Rodgers was limited in practice for a second straight
day. Went through pass under pressure and went through two
team periods. So getting ready to play, McCarthy said. The
Packers are traveling to Seattle today. McCarthy said hes still
looking for an indoor facility in the Seattle area for practice on
Saturday but itll be as close as we can get it to our normal
Saturday practice.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
- Indiana offensive lineman Collin Rahrig accepted
an invitation to play in the
90th East-West Shrine Game
Saturday at Tropicana Field
in St. Petersburg, Fla..
According to the grandson
of Tom and Jane Osting of
Delphos and son of Kevin
and Cindy (Osting) Rahrig of
South Bend, Indiana, that is
not the only thing the week of
preparation has brought.
Weve had a chance
to visit the children at the
Shriners

Children down here. Both
teams paid a visit Sunday
and it was a wonderful
thing, Rahrig noted. A lot
of Shriners were here, as well
as a DJ and clowns. It was
fun to get the chance to throw
the football or play basketball
with the kids that were a little
more mobile and even spend
time with those that couldnt
do those things. Its special
to play this game in honor of
those that maybe will never
be able to play this sport outside of throwing a football.
Rahrig joins an elite list of
football greats, such as John

Favre, and 70 NFL Hall of

the East-West Shrine Game
in addition to more than

Technology means more correct calls and more scrutiny

Associated Press
NEW YORK The officials huddled to sort out the close
call, so the TV broadcast showed the clip over and over, the
announcers declaring a definite touchdown.
Standard fare today but not so 35 years ago. Mike
Renfro, whose lunging catch in the back of the end zone was
eventually ruled incomplete, suspects thats why so many fans
remember and rue the play from the 1979 AFC championship game.
Viewers across America took in that moment and
fumed, Its clear here in my den, Renfro says.
Now fans think that at least a few times per
game. Other sports joined the NFL in instituting
video reviews, and viewers at home can follow
along as their own replay officials.
They can watch more and better camera angles
in high-definition super slow motion. Rewind the
play on their DVRs. Instantly look up analysis and
images on social media. Rehash the decision on
24/7 sports television.
Officiating is better than its ever been, Mike Pereira
insists. But people dont think that.
Pereira used to be in charge of ensuring the NFL got calls
right. These days, he lets millions of fans know if a call is
wrong.
After retiring as the leagues officiating chief in 2010,
Pereira joined Fox in a newly created role as a rules analyst.
The concept proved so popular that other networks hired their
own.
Hes become such a part of the fabric of watching the
game, says John Entz, Foxs executive producer for NFL
coverage.
Lead announcer Joe Buck used to espouse a less is more
philosophy in analyzing questionable calls, not wanting to be
burned by his lack of expertise. Then the network added what
Buck calls the the greatest gift weve been given: the ability

to bring in Pereira to offer an instant, definitive assessment.

Fox has leaned on him heavily on critical rulings the last
two Sundays.
Pereira asserted that pass interference should have been
called against the Cowboys in their wild-card win over the
Lions. A week later, he correctly predicted that a Dallas catch
would be overturned at Green Bay.
Buck is no Luddite when it comes to instant replay. Yet
he acknowledges he went to sleep two straight Sunday nights
feeling a bit conflicted about the thrilling games he
had just called: The disputed officiating decisions
had overshadowed everything else.
The innocence of that is gone, he says.
While working the baseball playoffs last fall,
Buck happened to catch an old Yankees-Dodgers
World Series on MLB Network. There was a close
play at first base and Buck realized he was conditioned to expect nine replays. Instead, the announcers
briefly noted it was tough to tell if the runner was
safe or out, then moved on.
Major League Baseball instituted video reviews for
many on-field calls last season after Commissioner Bud
Selig long argued human error was part of the game. The
NBA has gradually expanded the scope of replay since
adopting it in 2002. The NHL started reviewing goals in
1991, with ongoing discussions about widening the use of
video.
The NFL first tried instant replay from 1986-91 and introduced the current system in 1999.
Those advances allow officials to get more and more calls
right. They also may make fans, players and coaches less and
less tolerant when mistakes are made.
Theres more pressure than ever to get it right, Entz says.
But some calls will always be wrong, no matter how much
replay is expanded in the future.

that gave them a 42-23 lead

with 3:19 left in the quarter.
Jade Clement started the
run sinking three free throws
after being fouled on a threepoint attempt by McCleery,
who picked up her fourth
foul at the time. After a Diller
basket, Thatcher scored for
the Lancers before Grove
scored the next eight points
as Carlee McCluer and Diller
converted three point plays
and Clement went to the
hoop strong for two points.
With a young team,
like we have, we talk a lot
about poise and composure,
Schroeder said. Weve had
a couple of games this year
where we have had a lead

of fans who get to dissect

slow-motion, HD replays.
The standard has been
raised because everybody
sees these things now,
says Thorn, who has been
involved with the league in
some fashion since 1963.
Watch video of old NFL
games, Pereira says, and its
conspicuous how many mistakes were made. Pereira
wonders if the surging popularity of the sport, not to
mention the rise of gambling
and fantasy football, leaves
fans more invested and
accordingly more infuriated
at missed calls.
Renfro agrees. He refuses
to lament that instant replay
wasnt available back in

and Brady in back-to-back weeks and is

first player in NFL history to pass for at
least 250 yards in each of first five playoff
games. Kicker Adam Vinatieri will break
Jerry Rices record for most postseason
games played when he competes in No.
30 Sunday. Vinatieri also can break tie
with Tony Fritsch for most consecutive
postseason games with field goal (13),
doing it against franchise he started with.
RB Daniel Boom Herron needs five
receptions to break franchise record for
single postseason. Herron has 18 in two
games. Joseph Addai had 22 in four games
in 2006. WR Reggie Wayne needs 36
yards receiving to move past Cliff Branch
(1,289) for No. 3 on NFLs postseason list
and one TD catch to join four others with
10 TD catches in playoffs, third all-time.
Indianapolis should start same offensive
line combination for third straight week,
something that hasnt happened since first
month of season. LB DQwell Jackson
led AFC with 140 tackles. LB Jonathan
Newsome led AFC rookies with 6 sacks.
Patriots 16-4 at home in playoffs, but 5-3
in past eight postseason games at Gillette
Stadium. Colts had five players chosen
for Pro Bowl. Patriots beat Ravens in
an AFC divisional game, becoming first

and teams have went on a run

and we just werent seasoned
enough or gritty enough to
hold on and make enough
plays to do it. It was nice to
see our young team respond
tonight, keep our poise and
hit a couple of buckets.
The Bulldogs ended the
third quarter with a 48-26
lead. Lincolnview was able
to get within 17 points in the
fourth quarter as that was
close as they could get.
Clement led the Bulldogs
with 14 points, while Diller had
13 and Bellman 12 as nine Grove
players scored in the contest.
We were able to get
the ball into our post and
I thought that was key,

January 1980. In fact, he was

ambivalent about the NFL
instituting it, describing himself as old school.
But as the game and
the money involved got
bigger, he came around to the
idea. And he figures the most
memorable play of his 10-year
career probably had something to do with the policy.
Fans who list the non-catch
as one of the most notable
botched calls in NFL history
may not recall this: Had the
upstart Houston Oilers been
awarded the touchdown against
the reigning Super Bowl champion Steelers, it merely would
have tied the score late in the
third quarter. Pittsburgh went
on to win 27-13.

team to win postseason game after trailing

twice by 14 points. Brady overtook Joe
Montana for most postseason TD passes
after throwing three against Ravens. Brady
has 46, one more than Montana. Brady
also has most postseason wins by quarterback (19), completions and attempts
and needs 10 yards passing to surpass
Manning for most in postseason. Bill
Belichick needs one win to reach 21 and
pass Tom Landry with most in postseason.
Backup safety Duron Harmon had interception against Baltimores Joe Flacco with
just over 90 seconds left to stop potential
go-ahead drive. Julian Edelman led
Patriots with 92 receptions this season and
added eight against Ravens. Also threw
51-yard TD pass to Danny Amendola vs.
Baltimore, first pass of six-year career.
Rob Gronkowski led all TEs with 1,124
yards receiving and had seven catches,
one TD vs. Ravens. In past two games
vs. Colts, LeGarrette Blount ran for 166
yards and four TDs in last years divisional game and Jonas Gray ran for 201
yards and four TDs this season. Patriots
rushed for just 14 yards against Ravens.
Patriots had five players chosen for
Pro Bowl.

Schroeder said. We knew

they didnt match up well
with us inside, so we wanted
to push the ball inside. Its
always good when you have
three girls in double digits.
We have pretty balanced
scoring. Everyone stepped up
and did their job tonight.
Thatcher had 15 points
to lead the Lancers and
Bowersock added 11.
Columbus Grove won the
junior varsity contest 57-29.
Lauren Schroeder had 12
points for the Bulldogs and
Macy McCluer 11. Alana
Williams had 10 points for
the Lancers.

Rahrig
(Continued from page 7)
In 2014, Rahrig was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection and a nominee for
the Rimington Trophy and the Burlsworth
Trophy. A team captain, he started all 12
games, the first six at center and the final six
at left guard. The South Bend, Ind., native
allowed just two sacks in a team-high 808
snaps and finished second among the linemen

with 56 knockdowns.
From what I gathered of the whole week,
the scouts and coaches were more interested
in our game films and what we did during
the season. They also wanted to see how well
we prepared this week, live and personal,
he added. I havent been invited to the
NFL Combine yet but I know a fewplayers
that were invited already. If I dont get the
call, Indianas Pro Day is the week after and

they basically do the same things as at the

Combine, just not with the media scrutiny.
Kickoff Saturday is 4 p.m. live on NFL
Network.

Amy

The Master), shines
with a wounded,
subdued glow as

understand both the
weakness that would
let her character
remain a victim of
Walters bullying, as
well as the strength it
took for her to finally

20 years later, sue him
to prove her rightful

DEAR ADULT TENANT: Your
sister may feel that because the house
technically belongs to your mother (in
spite of the fact that you are paying
rent) that she doesnt have to respect

continue. At this point, the ball is in

Schwartzman (an art

gallery snob) and Joe
Polito (a nightclub
owner), all of whom
provide their own dry,
dark-comic edges to
the central melodrama.
The
movie
culminates
in
a
recreation of the 1986
trail, a showdown in
which a judge orders
Margaret and Walter
into an easel-versuseasel contest for the
jury to determine who
was the real artist of
big eye paintings.
Burtons
movie
brings up several
issues: the subjugation
of women in the 1950s
and 60s, intellectual
property theft and
the role of media and
publicity in creating
fads, movements and
celebrity. But mostly
its a wacky history
lesson about a reallife woman who
finally set the record
straight, told by a
director who loves a
kitschy underdog tale,
with two lead actors
who put their own
colorful brushstrokes
on a zesty, littleknown story. Big

a big breakout hit, but
its certainly a big,
bright surprise.

Army opens grueling Ranger jobs to women

WASHINGTON (AP) The Army will
allow as many as 60 women to participate
in the next Ranger course, allowing women
for the first time to compete in the grueling
two-month combat school. It is considered
one of the first steps into the military special
operations field.
Army Secretary John McHugh approved
the change that would allow women in the
course beginning in late April. His decision
marks the latest move in the Pentagons push
to open as many combat jobs possible to
women. Currently about 900 of the militarys
approximately 1,000 occupations are open to
women, but the toughest ones remain closed
to them, including infantry, armor and special
operation jobs.
While completing the leadership course
would let women wear the coveted Ranger
tab, it does not let them become members of
the Ranger regiment. Currently only men can
be in the 75th Ranger Regiment the special
operations forces unit based at Fort Benning,
Georgia. Joining the regiment requires addi-

tional schooling that is physically, emotionally and mentally challenging.

Women and men preparing for the Ranger
course will be able to participate in a 16-day
training and assessment school that would
train women on some of the infantry and
combat skills that they would not already
have. Infantry jobs are not currently open to
women.
The Ranger school includes three phases.
The first 20 days focus on military skills
and endurance. The second is a mountain
phase that includes more small-unit operations and survival techniques and the final,
so-called swamp phase takes place in Florida
and includes airborne assault, amphibious
operations and extreme mental and physical
stress.
Juliet Beyler, the Pentagons director of
officer and enlisted personnel management,
said Thursday that opening the Ranger school
to women was the next logical step, as the
department continues its review of all jobs
across the military to see if they can be open

to women. And, as the year goes on, she said

each step will inform the next, so the experiences of the women in the Ranger school will
be examined and used as examples as other
job openings are considered.
She noted that some women are already
serving in a few specific jobs linked to units
of special operations forces. Mainly those are
women in logistics, administrative or psychological operations posts at the headquarters
level.
But one woman is now a member of the
elite 160th special operations aviation regiment, known as the Night Stalkers.
The Night Stalkers may be best known for
flying the helicopters that took Navy SEALS
into Osama bin Ladens compound in 2011.
That unit was also the one most often
named by Army women as the combat job
theyd like. While less than 8 percent of the
women who responded to a survey last year
said theyd want a combat job, more than 30
percent of those who did named the Night
Stalkers as their top choice.

The 160th is a specialized unit used to fly

forces fast, low and deep behind enemy lines
under cover of darkness. About 17 women
worked in the unit in administrative, intelligence and logistics posts, as of last year.
Also, there have long been women aviators and aircrew in the conventional Army,
just not on the special operations teams.
By January 2016, the military must open
all combat jobs to women or explain why any
must remain closed.
The Pentagon lifted its ban on women in
combat jobs in 2012, but gave the military
services time to gradually and systematically
integrate women into the male-only front-line
positions.
Special operations jobs are some of the last
to be addressed, as commanders review the
qualifications needed and assess the impact
of bringing women in.
Military leaders have made it clear that
they will not reduce standards for any jobs in
order to let women in.

With Europe dreading more
terror, Belgian authorities
moved swiftly to pre-empt
what they called a major
attack by as little as hours
Thursday, killing two suspects
in a firefight and arresting a
third in a vast anti-terrorism
sweep that stretched into the
night.
The police raid on a former bakery in this provincial rustbelt town was another
palpable sign that terror had

Islamic holy war in Syria.

As soon as they thought
special forces were there, they

After the gun smoke lifted,
police continued with searches in Verviers and the greater

NEW YORK (AP) This years flu

vaccine is doing a pretty crummy job. Its
only 23 percent effective, which is one of
the worst performances in the last decade,
according to a government study released
Thursday.
The poor showing is primarily because
the vaccine doesnt include the bug that is
making most people sick, health officials
say. In the last decade, flu vaccines at their
best were 50 to 60 percent effective.
This is an uncommon year, said Dr.
Alicia Fry, a flu vaccine expert at the
Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, who was involved in the
study.
The findings are not surprising, though.
In early December, CDC officials warned
the vaccine probably wouldnt work very
well because it isnt well matched to a strain
thats been spreading widely.
Each year, the flu vaccine is reformulated, based on experts best guess at which
three or four strains will be the biggest
problem. Those decisions are usually made
in February, months before the flu season,
to give companies that make flu shots and
nasal spray vaccine enough time to make
enough doses.
But this years formula didnt include the
strain of H3N2 virus that ended up causing
about two-thirds of the illnesses this winter.
And that strain tends to cause more hospitalizations and deaths, particularly in the
elderly, making this a particularly bad winter to have a problem with the flu vaccine.
Indeed, the flu season is shaping up to
a bad one. Health officials are comparing it to the nasty flu season two winters
ago, and this one may prove to be worse.
Hospitalization rates in people 65 and older
are higher than they were at the same point
in the 2012-2013 season, according to CDC
data.
The results from the preliminary study
werent large enough to show how the vac-

cine is working in each age group, although

flu vaccines traditionally dont work as well
in elderly people.
The study involved 2,321 people in five
states Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas,
Wisconsin and Washington who had
respiratory illnesses from November to
early January. The researchers said vaccinated people had a 23 percent lower chance
of winding up at the doctor with the flu.
The CDC began regularly tracking
the effectiveness of the flu vaccine during the 2004-2005 season, but the results
for the first few years were from smaller
studies and are considered less reliable.
Effectiveness has ranged from 47 percent
to 60 percent in the last half-dozen years,
when studies involved larger numbers of
patients.
Its only in those last several years that
we really understand whats really going
on with the flu vaccines, said Dr. Arnold
Monto, a University of Michigan flu expert
and another author of the study.
CDC officials say people should still
get a flu shot this year. Recently, the flu
season in the U.S. has peaked in January
or February, but people can continue to
get sick for months. And they could get
infected by the flu strains that were included
in this years version.
The vaccines disappointing performance
affected the family of a woman who worked
on the flu study at the Marshfield Clinic in
Wisconsin. Kelly Mathews, of Wisconsin
Rapids, said she makes sure her three sons
get flu shots each year especially after
they got very sick in 2009, when swine flu
was raging and vaccine was scarce.
But her 7-year-old son, Corbyn Lemper,
developed a lasting cough and was diagnosed with the flu just before New Years.
Mathews said the flu shot might have at
least kept him from becoming really sick.
Its better to get it, she said.

US puts dent in embargo against Cuba

WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration is
putting a large dent in the U.S. embargo against Cuba as of
today, significantly loosening restrictions on American trade
and investment.
The new rules also open up the communist island to greater
American travel and allow U.S. citizens to start bringing home
small amounts of Cuban cigars after more than a half-century
ban.
Thursdays announcement of new Treasury and
Commerce Department regulations are the next step in
President Barack Obamas plan to re-establish diplomatic
relations with Cuba. They come three days after U.S. officials confirmed the release of 53 political prisoners Cuba
had promised to free.
Only Congress can end the five-decade embargo. But the
measures give permission for Americans to use credit cards
in Cuba and U.S. companies to export telephone, computer
and Internet technologies. Investments in some small business
are permitted. General tourist travel is still prohibited, but
Americans authorized to visit Cuba need no longer apply for
special licenses.

Obama announced last month that he would soften the

embargo and begin restoring diplomatic ties with Havana, saying these 50 years have shown that isolation has not worked.
The deal was the product of 18 months of secret talks that
culminated in the exchange of imprisoned spies and release
of Alan Gross, a U.S. government contractor who had been
imprisoned in Cuba for five years.
The few U.S. companies facilitating travel to Cuba say
inquiries have exploded since December. American visits
could triple this year, from about 90,000 annually. Were hiring more people, weve secured more hotel rooms and assets
in Cuba to provide additional travel, said Tom Popper, president of New York-based insightCuba.
With the new regulations public, the focus shifts to
American businesses and the Cuban government. Some
changes could take months as U.S. firms analyze the risks and
benefits of moving into a complicated new market. And the
Cuban government has said nothing publicly about how it will
regulate new trade with the United States. Foreign companies
currently deal almost entirely with state-owned firms that are
notoriously slow, inefficient and short on cash.

Duke nixes plan to use chapel tower for Muslim prayer call
DURHAM, N.C. (AP)
Days after announcing that a
Muslim call to prayer would
echo from its historic chapel tower, Duke University
changed course Thursday
following a flurry of calls
and emails objecting to the
plan.
Instead, Muslims will
gather for their call to prayer
in a grassy area near the
210-foot gothic tower before
heading into a room in Duke
Chapel for their weekly
prayer service. The university had previously said a
moderately amplified call
to prayer would be read by
members of the Muslim
Students Association from
the tower for about three
minutes each Friday.
Michael
Schoenfeld,
Dukes vice president for
public affairs and govern-

ment relations, said it would

be up to the students if they
want to use some sort of
amplification.
The original plan drew
the ire of evangelist Franklin
Graham, who urged Duke
alumni to withhold support
because of violence against
Christians that he attributed
to Muslims. Schoenfeld said
emails and calls came from
alumni and others in the
community.
There was considerable
traffic and conversation and
even a little bit of confusion, both within the campus
and certainly outside, about
what Duke was doing,
Schoenfeld said. The purposes and goals and even the
facts had been so mischaracterized as to turn it into
a divisive situation, not a
unifying situation.

He also said there were

concerns about safety and
security, but he declined to
elaborate on whether any
specific threats had been
received.
Graham, the son of the
Rev. Billy Graham, wrote
later in the day that the university made the right decision to cancel the plan to
use the tower. However,
Schoenfeld said the reversal
was not due to Grahams
opposition.
Shalini Subbarao, 19, a
sophomore from St. Louis,
said she was disappointed
with the schools reversal
as she walked past the chapel.
I thought it was really
progressive. It showed our
openness to other religions,
she said of the original plan.
The campus was most-

ly business as usual on
Thursday afternoon, with
students leaving classes,
waiting for a cross-campus
bus or heading to evening
meetings. Several said they
were not familiar with the
issue, while others reactions
were mixed.
Ios Kotaogiannis, a
39-year-old doctoral candidate in computer science
who is from Greece, said he
was glad officials reversed
their decision.
Im a secular person. Im
not against religion. I think
religion is good. But it has
its place inside the chapel, he said.
The chapel is identified by the school as a
Christian church but also
hosts Hindu services and
has been used for Buddhist
meditations.

The common question for pet owners caring for end of life
pets is always the same: Am I making the right decision to let
go? when given the choice. Of course, this was the Frosts
debate as well. I reassured them when the time came for Jack
to leave us, their decision would be and was the greatest act of
love of all.
I know Jacks family continues to struggle with his loss
because he was more than a precious family pet. In talking
with them during many visits and phone calls, it was more than
apparent that he was their Heart Dog. Heart Dogs dig in a
little deeper and the loss is incredibly more painful.
I, too, have had a Heart Dog. The pain associated with
the loss seemed like it would never end. But it didseveral
months later when my husband placed a new puppy in my lap.
Painful as it may seem, I hope you have a Heart Dog, too,
