The first reading describes when the Lord spoke to
Samuel for the first time. It was very rare for the Lord to speak directly
to his people! Eli taught Samuel the correct way to respond to the Lord:
Speak Lord, your servant is listening.
How often do we say YES to Gods call on our lives? Most
likely we respond more positively to the false calls on our time, giving
top priority to our needs & wants, rather that those of our neighbours.
Teach us Lord to imitate the actions of Samuel by responding to
your calls with love and generosity.

Fr Frank Fitzpatrick

R.I. P

Last weekend we
announce that Fr Frank passed away
peacefully at North Manchester
Hospital on Sunday 4th January,
2015, he was 85 years old.
Fr Frank was born on 5th
April 1929 in Clayton. He attended St. Willibrords Primary
School and it was whilst studying
at St Bedes College that he began his training for the
Priesthood. He was ordained on the 30th May 1953 by
Bishop Henry Marshall. During his 62 years of Priesthood he served as Assistant Priest at St. Josephs Halliwell, St. Josephs Blackburn and The English Martyrs,
Whalley Range. He moved to Bury in 1970 as Parish
Priest of St. Bedes and then move to St. Hildas, Tottington in 1979 where he was Parish Priest until his retirement in 1999.
Fr. Frank retired into Guardian Angels Parish
and soon became a very active member of our Parish
Community. Enjoying two major milestones in his life
here with us, his Golden Jubilee in 2003 and his 80th
Birthday in 2009. Being a creature of habit he still took
Tuesdays as his day-off and said Mass every day either with Fr Paul or on his own on other days in the
week and on Sunday morning.
Every morning he walked the short distance from
home down Ainsworth Rd, and soon became a familiar
face and walking companion for the Mums and children
who were on their way to Guardian Angels School and
others in the area. He loved to walk and would often be
seen walking down Bolton Road to go shopping at the
fish market.
The children in both our Primary Schools gave
him the name Fr Frank and after years of being Fr Fitzpatrick, he confided to us one day that he rather liked
it. Our Altar Servers especially would joked that they
had to get to the Crme Eggs on Easter Sunday before
Fr Frank, or there wouldnt be any left. A big man
whose presence amongst us has been, and will continue
to be, greatly missed.
His body was received into the Chapel at Nazareth
House last Wednesday evening at which Fr Paul
preached. His Funeral Mass was at Nazareth House
Chapel last Thursday at which Bishop John presided
and preached.
In light of the fact that Nazareth House Chapel is
very small, and we feel that a lot of people from Bury
and especially the Parishes he was involved with would
like to pay their respects to him. So we are celebrating a
Memorial Mass here at Guardian Angels this
Wednesday evening 21st January at 7.00pm. Everyone is welcome!
After Mass we would like to invite everyone to come
into the Parish Centre for Tea and Coffee and Cake!
Fr Frank loved his cake! If you would like to make
some Cakesplease do, and bring them to the Office
on Wednesday morning or bring them with you to
Mass and take them into the Centre before Mass begins. Thank you.

Last year Fr Paul and Sharon were

commissioned by Redemptorist
Publications to write a new book,
entitled:

Welcome to Witness:
Becoming an Evangelising
Parish.

We are delighted to report that the Book was published just

before Christmas. Below you can read part of the summary from
the back of the Book.

WELCOME TO WITNESS
Becoming an evangelising parish
Whenever we take a step towards Jesus,
we come to realise that he is already there,
waiting for us with open arms.
These words of Pope Francis, from Evangelii Gaudium, are a
wonderful summary of the process of evangelisation. Pope
Francis describes the parish as a community of communities, a
sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their
journey, and a centre of constant missionary outreach.
This book grew out of the work which the authors do in the
Department for Evangelisation in Salford Diocese, nationally
and the practical experience of working in a parish in the
Salford Diocese. It is designed as a hands-on support to priests,
catechists and parishioners. It is intended to help a parish truly
become, in the words of St John Paul II, the Church living in
the midst of the homes of her sons and daughters.
Copies of the book are now available for purchasing (on the table at the back of church, or during the week from the Parish
Office). Price 7.95 a copy
