WELLPLAN Installation and Diagnostics Guide

Upgrading WELLPLAN

This chapter contains important information that you need before proceeding
with the installation. There are sections about upgrading from previous
versions of WELLPLAN, hardware requirements of WELLPLAN 1998.7 and
licensing issues.

Upgrading from Previous Windows Versions

This section outlines the details you will have to consider when updating
WELLPLAN from previous Windows versions.

WELLPLAN Database Update

The WELLPLAN data model has changed for the 1998.7 release. As a result, it
is necessary to upgrade WELLPLAN 6.0 databases.
An upgrade program is included for WELLPLAN 6.0 Access databases. The
setup program will automatically detect and offer to upgrade the current
WELLPLAN 6.0 database. If additional databases need to be upgraded, the
upgrade program can be run from the Start menu.

Data Migration
Most WELLPLAN 5.3.x / 1998.x data is supported by WELLPLAN 1998.7.
The WELLPLAN 5.3 Data Import utility is run from the WELLPLAN 1998.7
application. Once WELLPLAN is installed, click File on the menu bar and
select Import and WELLPLAN 5.3... and follow the on screen instructions.
WELLPLAN 5.3.x/1998.x tool catalogs can also be imported into
WELLPLAN 1998.7. The WELLPLAN 5 Catalog Import tool can be
launched from the WELLPLAN 1998.7 program group.

Bitlock Licensing Upgrade Issues

When WELLPLAN 5.3.1 was released a new bitlock licensing system was
introduced, requiring that the previous green Software Security Inc. bitlocks be
December 2000

replaced with the new Rainbow Sentinel bitlocks. This release continues to
support the new Rainbow Sentinel bitlocks. No change is necessary.
For those clients who are upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3 or older, simply
unplug your old bitlock and connect your new one.

Network Licensing Upgrade Issues

In WELLPLAN 5.3.1 the network licensing system, Netsecur, was enhanced to
support all Landmark Windows products within the same licensing session and
to be easier for the client to configure and implement. That release of Netsecur
system was not compatible with previous versions, so it was necessary to
reconfigure your Netsecur system after installing WELLPLAN 5.3.1.
Clients who are upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3.1 (R98) or 1998.1 (R98
Plus) will not need to make any change to their existing Netsecur licensing
system. Clients who are just now upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3 or older
should contact Landmark for your new Netsecur software license. To receive
your license, contact the license administration team via email
(license@lgc.com), the World Wide Web (http://www.lgc.com) or phone (The
Americas 281-560-1110, option 6, or outside the Americas +44 (0) 1932832100). Clients who are upgrading from WELLPLAN 5.3.1 can continue
using the network licensing system that was setup when WELLPLAN 5.3.1
was setup.
To receive information about any licensing issues, contact
the license administration team via email
(license@lgc.com), the World Wide Web (http://
www.lgc.com) or phone (The Americas 281-560-1110,
option 6, or outside the Americas +44 (0) 1932-832100).

WELLPLAN Installation and Diagnostics Guide

Network Installation
This section presents a guide to installing WELLPLAN on a network. These
instructions are intended to advise Network System Administrators and
WELLPLAN specialists on how to organize WELLPLAN network
installations. The average WELLPLAN user does not need to understand the
following in order to use the system on a day-to-day basis.

Directory Structure
This section discusses the structure of a WELLPLAN network installation. It is
important that the Network Administrator read this section before proceeding
with a network installation.
A standard installation of WELLPLAN on a Windows NT network uses two
directories or drive mappings:

Client Directory [C]:\Program Files\Landmark\WELLPLAN

The Client directory, on the user's own PC, is where the users local files,
miscellaneous temporary (or scratch) files, and configuration data are
located. Also, various files that are created by the user (reports, graphs and
transfer files) are written here. These files are owned by a particular
user and are not shared.
A common alternative installation is to place the Client directory for each
user on the Server as well. This is achieved by placing the Local directory
under each user's Home directory (to use Netware terminology). For
example:
Client directory in user's home directory
H:\HOME\USER001\WELLPLAN
The advantage of this is gained in system administration and maintenance.
The disadvantage of this is a slowdown in the performance of the
WELLPLAN system if high network traffic is the norm.

Server Directory - [F]:\WELLPLAN\SERVER

The Network directory on the server will contain the system files that can
be shared by all users. This directory can also reside on the users PC to
save space on the file server.

WELLPLAN Installation and Diagnostics Guide

Installing WELLPLAN on a Network

There are two main steps to install WELLPLAN on a network. First, the
Network Administrator will install the WELLPLAN Network directory in a
shared directory on the network. Then each user will run the Setup program
from the <wpnet>\setup directory to install their Local directory. Both of
these procedures are discussed below. The WELLPLAN directory structure
and terminology was discussed earlier in this section.
The recommended order for performing a network installation is as follows:

Read the Network Directory Structure section and determine where the
WELLPLAN system will be installed on your network.

Install WELLPLAN on the network.

If necessary, contact the license administration team via email

(license@lgc.com), the World Wide Web (http://www.lgc.com) or phone
(The Americas 281-560-1110, option 6, or outside the Americas +44 (0)
1932-832100) if you need to set up the Netsecur licensing system.

Network Installation Steps

The WELLPLAN 1998.7 installation is located on Volume 2 of the CD Binder
kit. You cannot install WELLPLAN 1998.7 from Volume 1of the kit.

WELLPLAN Installation and Diagnostics Guide

Client Installation
A Client Installation installs the WELLPLAN client directory, which allows
the user to run the Network installation of WELLPLAN. The following steps
outline the Client Installation:
1.

The Client Installation can either be launched at the end of the Network
Server installation or by running the Client Installation Setup Program.
The SETUP.EXE is found in the SETUP directory of the Network
WELLPLAN Server Directory: <wpnet>\Setup\Setup.exe.

2.

The client install is the same as a single user installation, with the
exception that the setup type (Single User or Network) can not be chosen.

WELLPLAN Database
WELLPLAN1998.7 is connected to a MS Access 97 database. It is intended to
reside locally, in each users PC. It is not intended to be shared by multiple
users, simultaneously. That functionality will be added in a future release.
The database file, wellplan.mdb, is installed in the <wp>\Database
directory, where <wp> is the WELLPLAN client directory. It can be moved to
another location, which would require that the path be changed in the ODBC
data source, wellplan. This can be done using the 32 bit ODBC
Administrator.

Administration

This chapter discusses various tools and procedures that the WELLPLAN or
Network Administrator will use in supporting networked and single-user
installations of WELLPLAN.

Logo Control
WELLPLAN is installed with no report logos, but they can be added manually.
The information that follows discusses how to enable/disable logos and how to
add new logos to WELLPLAN.

Adding Company Logos to Reports

New logos, in Windows Bitmap format, can be added to the WELLPLAN
system by doing the following:
1.

Copy the bitmap file to the <wp>\report directory where <wp> is the
WELLPLAN installation directory in single user installations and the
WELLPLAN Server directory in network installations.

2.

Edit the file LOGO.CFG in the WELLPLAN Local directory.

3.

Locate the following line:

leftSlot_upper:

This string will be followed by None or the current logo filename.

4.

Replace None or the existing logo filename with the new logo filename,
excluding the extension.

5.

Repeat these steps for rightSlot_upper.

A different logo can be printed on each side of the report
headers by specifying a different file name for each.
