documentary A Grain of Sand

or British guitarist Jason Carter,

music is a tool to touch lives,
surmount cultural barriers and
connect people around the globe.
Music has taken him to places such
as North Korea, Bahrain, Uzbekistan,
Mozambique, Saudi Arabia, Estonia and
Afghanistan, where he has collaborated
with high-profile musicians from varied
cultures to reach out to people and
forge ties with music lovers across the
world. Carter is now in the UAE. He
has embarked on a magical journey
with award-winning documentary
maker Ray Haddad to trace and film
the musical tradition of pearl divers in
the UAE.

A Grain of Sand is a road movie,

says Carter. We will drive from Ras al
Khaimah to Delma Island in search of
the last remaining pearl divers in the
UAE and bring them together for a
concert. Perhaps for the last time,
he adds.

A tangible heritage

Though the pearling tradition in the

GCC has lost its lustre after cultured
Japanese pearls began to thrive
worldwide, the irresistible tunes of pearl
divers songs have, however, continued
to mesmerise Carter.
Carter has been fascinated by the
culture and heritage of the pearl divers

since he first arrived in the UAE in 1993

to work at the Hilton Dubai. He has
previously performed with the old pearl
divers in Bahrain and Kuwait.
Last year, I started to think about
the whereabouts of the pearl divers
in the UAE and then thought about
making a film on them. The UAE has
changed so much and so quickly, and I
sometimes get frustrated while staring
at the shopping malls, knowing that
underneath it all are stories of people
whose lives were harsh.
These stories are so important in
terms of the UAEs cultural identity.
Moving to the UAE was a huge
step to say the least for the talented

mechanical engineer-turned-musician
from Cornwall.
It was my first real step outside my
comfort zone. In those days Dubai was
off the beaten track and I loved it.
It was easier to make contact with
locals and the heritage was more
tangible. Within three days of landing
in the UAE, I found myself sitting in the
desert with an oud player and singers,
fumbling my way through Arabic scales.
The scales simply gave me goosebumps,
and I was hooked. I have the same
experience even today while playing
with Khaleeji musicians. It is addictive.
Carter adds, I had listened to
Arabic music before coming to the
UAE but when you stand in the heat
of the desert, feeling the isolation and
vulnerability of the emptiness of the
space, then it truly makes sense.
While the discovery of oil is often
credited with the UAEs stratospheric
rise in the last four decades, many
believe the foundation of the Gulf
states economic prosperity was built
around the pearl trade.
Music played a critical role in the
lives of the pearl divers, which helped
them feel connected to each other in
very difficult circumstances. Their songs

The depth of scale

Each diver had his own song, which

other divers would sing for him as he
dived in rough seas. The song was
composed earlier and would last as
long as the diver could hold his breath.
The song also played the role of a
watch. If the diver did not surface by
the time the song ended, he would be
rescued, says Carter.
The story of A Grain of Sand
revolves around how the remaining
handful of old pearl divers many of
whom still live in the coastal areas of
the UAE and maintain their connection
with the sea through fishing and other
maritime activities cope with issues
that have risen out of the rapid social
and cultural transformation.
Have they been on the Dubai Metro
or in a Ferrari? Do they feel that their
stories are relevant to contemporary
culture? These are the questions we
will be asking when we make this film.
Furthermore, in Bahrain and Kuwait,
songs of the sea are still written by
these old men, so it will be interesting
to see if the lives and cultures of the
pearl divers are similar in the UAE,
says Carter.
Carter and Haddads exciting journey
will begin in Delma Island once a
bustling pearl hotspot.
I have been researching the project
for more than 12 months and have a list
of contacts of pearl divers and people
who will take us to the divers. The magic
of the film will lie in finding the pearl
divers in real time, says Carter.
While the project was kick-started
with a generous contribution from New

York University, Carter is still looking

for private and corporate sponsors.
We will be using the UAE-based
crowd-funding platform Al Flamnah
and will offer perks ranging from
credits in the film to album downloads,
on-site filming visits, house concerts
and a handmade 18-string harp guitar
donated by reputed guitar-maker
Sean Woolley.
Initial filming was expected to begin
in the first week of September with
plans to show the film to audiences
on December 27 at the Volvo Ocean
Race in Abu Dhabi.
Of course in a documentary such
as this, the journey dictates the film,
so we are open to many twists and
turns, says Carter.

captured the struggles and adversities

of their lives, their concerns and
pleasures, and the social values that
sustained them.
Today, it is no longer easy to make
contact with the local Emirati culture
and heritage. This documentary is
aimed at providing a window to people
to look into what has gone by, and also
a tradition which is breathing its last,
says Carter.

f you want to study how Iran is

changing, simply take a look at
President Hassan Rouhanis English
Twitter feed, which is followed
by more than a quarter of a million
people. During the Fifa World Cup, a
photo was posted from this account of
the Iranian president dressed casually
in a football jersey and watching the
national team on television while
enjoying tea and snacks. In August, the
same account tweeted a picture of
Iranian prize-winning mathematician
Maryam Mirzakhani without a hijab.
These efforts are part of Rouhanis
attempts to reveal different facets
of the country to the world. The
message is that Rouhani is an open,
approachable guy, who leads a country
that wants to engage with the modern
world. It is a PR move that has already
resulted in progress in negotiations with
the West, and is proving to be a boon
for the countrys tourism industry.

Palpable warmth

If you want to see the effects of

international policies on tourism, look at
Iran, says Nima Fallahi, a tour guide for
Pars Tourist Agency. One month after
the first peace accord between Rouhani
and the EU, we had a flow of requests.
Fallahi reports that tour guides are
now in great demand, and says he is
regularly asked by restaurateurs to
translate their menus into English. He
says Rouhani has succeeded in reversing
the decline in tourist numbers.
On a recent visit to Iran, I certainly
found that Iranians were welcoming
and eager to learn about the outside
world. At times, their generosity was
almost embarrassing. Exploring the
streets of the desert city of Yazd, my
friend and I encountered a middle-aged
man with his two teenage children, who

their car. Without hesitation, he put his

arms around us and declared we were
to join him at his fathers house for tea.
We were soon seated on the old mans
carpeted front room and given not only
tea but also baklava and apples.
Our interactions were not just
limited to men, either. As my friend
and I approached Persepolis the
ceremonial capital of the ancient
Persian Empire we were approached
by two young women in brightly
coloured headscarves who offered
to show us round nearby Shiraz so
they could practise their English. Later,
while relaxing in a public courtyard in
Shiraz, we met a sports teacher who
challenged us to a game of badminton
in the street to the bemusement,
or perhaps mild disapproval, of her
elderly mother.
This welcoming spirit isnt just all
talk. The Rouhani administration has
made it easier for tourists to enter the
country by increasing the number of
nationalities that can get visas on arrival.

was somewhat complex and required

Poetry, food and more

So, why should tourists visit Iran? There

are plenty of reasons. Anyone with
a passing interest in Middle Eastern
literature should visit Shiraz, the spiritual
home of Persian poetry, where they
can visit the tombs of the poets Saadi
and Hafez.
For architecture lovers, it is essential
to visit Isfahan, especially the enormous
public square, Naqsh-e Jahan, and the
mosques and palaces that surround
it, which contain some of the most
beautiful tile work and mosaics in
the world.
Iran holds plenty of delights for
food lovers too (though perhaps not
vegetarians). The classic Persian meal
of kebab with yoghurt and saffronflavoured rice is everywhere, but
visitors can also try authentic specialities
such as dizi, a hearty dish of chickpeas,
beans and meat that comes in a special

clay pot with its own masher with

which to grind the stew into a
delicious pulp.
Whats fascinating about Iranian
cuisine is the range of flavours that are
almost unknown outside the country.
At the famous Restaurant Shahrzad
in Isfahan, for instance, you can try
delicacies such as khoresht-e mast, an
unusual concoction of eggs, yoghurt,
meat, sugar and saffron.

A highly-skilled Isfahani craftsman creates a masterpiece

Plan ahead

There are still obstacles to overcome

before Iran becomes a thriving tourist
destination. One problem is the
countrys image in the eyes of potential
visitors. Uninformed westerners may
believe the average Iranian is a zealot
who burns the American flag on a
daily basis, or they may group Iran with
neighbouring, war-torn Iraq.
There are also practical problems.
International companies are forbidden
from transacting with Iran, which
means that as a tourist, your credit or
debit card wont work in the country.
Be prepared to carry a thick wad
of banknotes.

Pervasive influences

This opulent structure is bedecked

the mural and the facade showcases
the Japonisme movement (although it
also shows signs of Orientalism), which
caught on during the1850-60s when
Japan first opened up its ports. The
world was mesmerised by the wooden
block-prints, ornate asymmetrical
drawings, and perspectives that
characterised its art.
There were many imports during
this period, and while Paris was the
European centre of the movement
(art by Claude Monet and Edouard
Manet feature distinct influences), Spain,

Before marriage ties you down to your

responsibilities, make sure you let your honeymoon
take you places By Sanaya Pavri

he prospect of a romantic
honeymoon often upstages
the actual wedding, but
theres no getting around the
high expectations that have come to
surround this landmark event.
From die-hard cynics to incurable
romantics, most couples will reminisce
about this time as being among the
most idyllic in their lives. So what makes
it so special?
The honeymoon is a
commemoration of a new life as
husband and wife. It has traditionally
been celebrated to mark a new
beginning, but functionally, honeymoons
also represent time alone for a couple
to nurture and emotionally bond and
build intimacy, says Devika Singh,
Dubai-based psychology consultant.
In this day and age, where most
couples have known each other for a
while, the need to bond often takes
a back seat and couples seek thrill
and adventure instead. Therefore, it
is important to use this time wisely,
says Dr Lavina Ahuja, Personal
Development Consultant at LifeWorks

Experts say honeymoons

couples to celebrate the

Dubai.
Get to know the other person,
discover each other without the
extra responsibilities because even
if you have been together for years,
sometimes just being married changes
things. The words husband and wife
are loaded terms, signifying a whole
different kettle of fish for a lot of
people. A honeymoon gives you the
time to understand and come to terms
with this quality shift in the relationship,
adds Ahuja.
After the big day has come and
gone, its time for the happy couple
to look forward to unwinding after all
the wedding stress. So, where to? A
look at recent popular destinations will
reveal how the trend has shifted to
honeymooners wanting a bit of action
alongside romantic, candlelit meals and
sunbathing. They want to use their
honeymoon as an opportunity to visit
new places and to explore the world.
Couples can be stumped when it
comes to picking the destination for a
once-in-a-lifetime trip. Al Nawras picks
some of the worlds most vibrant cities
to have fun in.

Travel light

There is nothing worse for your

skin than flying with a full face of
make-up, but if you cant wrap
your head around that idea,
heres what you need to keep
in mind.
Replace your base or
foundation with a tinted
hydrating moisturiser or a light
beauty balm (BB) or colourcorrecting (CC) cream, which
will not dry out your skin if left
on for hours. Choose a good
primer instead and if you must
wear foundation, stick to light,
water-based liquid foundations
or just dab on compact powder.
Apply a very light non-shimmer
powder eye shadow with a light
non-waterproof eyeliner, so in

case you want to cleanse your

face before sleeping, a wet wipe
would do, suggests Dr Goel.
Take a leaf out of Oscarwinner Kate Winslets travel
beauty guide and only slather on
moisturiser sans makeup when
flying, or be like John Mayer who
doesnt board a flight without his
trusted lip balm.

Guzzle it down

You dont feel very

thirsty plus you
want to avoid the
constant trek to
the toilet, resulting
in a sure recipe for
dehydrated skin.
Begin drinking plenty of
water at least 24 hours before
your flight. Avoid caffeine and
aerated drinks. Carry facial wipes
enriched with vitamin C, green
tea and aloe vera and use these
to wipe off any non-waterproof
make-up you are wearing, says
Dr Goel.
She also suggests carrying a
hydrating thermal water spray.
Keep spraying your face from
a one-hand distance, this will
leave you looking refreshed and
radiant. Before landing, you can
apply a simple powder-based
product and lip gloss and you are
ready to take on the world.

Perky peepers

The dryness in
the plane not only
plays havoc with
your skin and hair,
but causes your
eyes to dry out
as well. Regular
lubricating eye
drops is the perfect solution or
you can always ask the attendant
for a cold towel and create your
own soothing eye pack that will
help reduce puffiness.
Its also a good idea to apply
firming under-eye cream to
prevent lines from setting in
during the flight. If all else fails,
cleverly applied eye makeup just
before landing should do the
trick. Line the inner rim of your
eyes with an eyeliner pencil in a
shade lighter than your skin tone
to brighten the eyes and then
load up on mascara, skipping the
bottom lashes to avoid any added
darkness there.

skin. She suggests preparing your

skin beforehand if possible the
day before by keeping in mind
simple tips and tricks, such as
avoiding salty foods and drinking
plenty of water .
In a pressurised cabin, the
air is extremely dry with only
10 per cent humidity. This can
cause your skin to get severely
dehydrated, leaving you looking
lustreless, says Mumbai-based
Dr Apratim Goel, cosmetic
dermatologist, laser surgeon and
founder of Cutis Skin Studio.

is Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan

Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi,
Member of Supreme Council
of the United Arab Emirates and the
Ruler of Sharjah since January 26,
1972, is in every sense of the term the
Renaissance Ruler.
Shaikh Sultans reign of 42 years,
as the ruler of Sharjah, is a period
of vigorous artistic and intellectual
activities, covering a wide variety of
areas such as revival of the IslamicArab
culture, preservation and protection of
Arab heritage and a renewed impetus
to modern learning.
Dr Shaikh Sultan is an astute
autobiographer. He has so far authored
and published his memoirs in four parts
titled as My Early Life, Taking the Reigns
the Critical Years 1971 to 1977, The
Consolidation Years 1979 1987 and
The Culture, Education and Change
1987 to 2004. These memoirs have
been written in Arabic and have been
translated into European and Asian
languages and also been published.
The fourth part of Dr Shaikh Sultans
Memoir Hadeeth Al Thakira vividly
reveals the initiatives taken by him
to promote Islamic Culture, which
ultimately resulted in Sharjah winning
UNESCOs The Cultural Capital of the
Arab World 1998 award. Dr Shaikh
Sultan donated an amount of $250,000
(about Dh918,219) to the UNESCO
and established the Sharjah Prize for
Arab Culture on October 26, 1998.

His memoirs describe the excellent

work done by Dr Shaikh Sultan in
reviving the Moorish/Arab cultural
legacy in Spain. In Chapter eight he
acknowledges the enactment of the
law of religious freedom in 1972 and
the recognition of Islam as a religion
granting Spanish Muslims constitutional
rights, including the right to disseminate
Islamic culture and sciences at schools
and universities in 1992. Dr Shaikh
Sultan also contributed towards
the building of the Azzagra Cultural
Foundation founded in Granada in
1993. He also inaugurated it on July
6, 2001.
The second important initiative taken
up by Dr Shaikh Sultan was to provide
quality higher education, both in Arabic

and English, to a growing number of

Emirati students from Sharjah and
other parts of the Arab world.
Though his memoirs titled Culture
Education and Change (19872004)
he has dealt with changes made in the
administrative setup that allowed for
greater participation in the governing
of the emirate.
While cherishing Dr Shaikh Sultans
memoirs, I am tempted to recall what
the Kuwaiti Minister of Information
and President of the National Council
for Culture, Arts and Letters said
on January 12, 2004, Honouring
His Highness Shaikh Sultan is like
honouring a giant of a scholar, wellversed in history, geography, creativity,
literature, drama and the arts.

What does travelling mean

to you?
I travel mostly for work and thanks
to my work I have travelled almost
all over the world. Travelling, for me,
is more than just sightseeing. I was
born into a Kashmiri family and grew
up in Shimla, a beautiful hill station in
Himachal Pradesh.
Nestled in the foothills of the
Himalayas, Kashmir and Himachal
Pradesh are both blessed with
incredibly beautiful landscapes.
After spending so many years in the
mountains, I no longer select a travel
destination just for the picturesque
locales. For me, travelling is about
meeting new people and exploring
foreign cultures.

What are your best childhood

holiday memories?
My favourite memory from childhood
was going to Kashmir from Shimla for
a holiday with my entire family. We
took a train to travel to Pathankot.
After a brief wait, we boarded a
bus to our destination in Kashmir.
The journey took us through vast

tops the list of my favourite places
in India. It is astoundingly beautiful

New service to Antalya

Air Arabia, the Middle East and North

Africas first and largest low-cost carrier,
recently announced the start of its nonstop services to the city of Antalya, on
the Mediterranean coast, in the southwest of Turkey.
The new service, from the carriers
primary hub in Sharjah, marked Air
Arabias second destination in Turkey
and 97th worldwide. Air Arabia
now offers three weekly flights to
Antalya, making it a convenient holiday
destination for passengers travelling
from the UAE.

Flights

from
Sharjah
International Airport on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays at 21:30
pm arriving at Antalya International
Airport at 00:45am. Return flights
depart Antalya at 01:25am arriving in
Sharjah at 06:25am.
The launch of Antalya complements
Air Arabias seven existing weekly
flights to the historic city of Istanbul
a route launched in 2006. Today, the
low-cost pioneer operates more than
5 weekly non-stop services between
Istanbul and Casablanca.

Air Arabia recently announced its

financial results for the second quarter
ending June 30, 2014, underlining the
airlines market leading position.
Air Arabias financial results for the
second quarter of this year exceeded
analyst expectations, with the airline
recording an outstanding net profit of
Dh173 million for the three months
ending June 30, 2014 an increase
of 128 per cent compared to Dh76
million reported in the corresponding
period of 2013. In the second quarter
of this year, Air Arabia posted a
turnover of Dh915 million, an increase
of 15 per cent compared to Dh797
million in the same period last year
The airline served more than1.6
million passengers in the second
quarter of this year, an increase of 8
per cent compared to the 1.5 million
passengers carried in the same period
last year
Air Arabias outstanding start to
2014 has accelerated in the second
quarter as the investments made
into our operational capacity and
cost management have continued to
deliver results, said Shaikh Abdullah
Bin Mohammad Al Thani, Chairman
of Air Arabia.
We have seen an 11 per cent
increase in capacity in the first half of
this year, yet we have sustained a high
average seat factor and seen the first
half turnover increase by 15 per cent.
The average yield for the first half of
2014 has also increased by 6 per cent,
a record that is not only among the
highest in the industry but also reflects
the true low-cost management
practices that Air Arabia follows.

Jason Carter, la musique est
un outil qui touche les vies, qui
dpassent tous les obstacles
culturels et qui tablit des liens entre
les gens du monde entier. La musique
la emport vers des destinations
comme la Core du Nord, le Bahren,
lOuzbkistan, le Mozambique, lArabie
Saoudite, lEstonie et lAfghanistan tout
en collaborant avec des musiciens de
haut profile de toutes les cultures pour
communiquer avec les gens et tablir
des liens avec les amateurs de musique
du monde entier. Carter rside
actuellement aux Emirats Arabes Unis.
Il a embarqu dans un priple magique
avec Ray Haddad, le documentariste
laurat de nombreux prix, pour
retracer et filmer le patrimoine musical
des pcheurs de perles aux Emirats
Arabes Unis.

continu fasciner Carter.
Carter est tomb sous le charme
de la culture et du patrimoine des
pcheurs de perles ds son arrive
aux Emirats Arabes Unis en 1993 pour
travailler au Hilton Duba. Il a dj
particip des concerts avec des vieux
pcheurs de perles Bahren et au
Kuwait. Lan dernier jai commenc
rflchir au sort des pcheurs de
perles aux Emirats Arabes Unis et jai
eu lide de raliser un documentaire
sur eux. Les Emirats ont subi des
changements normes et trs rapides
et jai t frustr parfois face aux
centres commerciaux car jtais certain
dire. Ces histoires revtent une grande
importance quant lidentit culturelle

Jprouve
la mme sensation aujourdhui en
jouant avec les musiciens Khaliji. Cest
vraiment addictif.
peuple. Jai cout la musique arabe

avant de venir aux Emirats Arabes Unis

mais lorsque vous vous retrouvez au
cur du dsir, constatant lisolement
et la vulnrabilit du vide de lespace,
vous en saisissez la signification. La
musique du Khaliji a subi des influences
rythmiques de lAfrique et des
influences harmoniques de la Perse.
Cela va de pair avec latmosphre du
dsert, la mer et les efforts dploys
par ce peuple, selon Carter.
Alors quon attribue souvent
la dcouverte du ptrole le mrite
de lascension poustouflante des
Emirats au cours des quatre dernires
dcennies, nombreux sont ceux qui
croient que la prosprit conomique
sest appuye sur le commerce de
perles.

contemporaine? Ce sont justement
ces questions que nous allons leur
poser en tournant le film.
De plus, Bahren et au Kuweit, ces
vieux messieurs continuent composer

essayer galement certaines spcialits

occidentaux malaviss peuvent croire
Soyez prt porter
sur vous une liasse de billets.

Les voyages de noces sont une
