TITLE: VEGETABLES
Introduction
Assure Model is one of the strategies that consist of various aspects that teacher
needs to take into consideration when planning a lesson. The six main aspects in
Assure Model are analyze the learners characteristics, state objectives for the
lesson, select, modify or design good materials that can be used in the lesson,
utilize the materials, require learner response and lastly is the evaluation for the
lesson on that day. It is good for a teacher to use Assure Model as their reference
in planning a good lesson to the pupils in the class.
Step 1 : Analyse Learner Characteristics
General Characteristics:
The lesson that will be conducted is designed for Year 3 pupils. The class has 30
students who are from different family backgrounds. Different backgrounds here
means they are from different religion, ethnic and their education before
entering school. Due to it, during brainstorming process with my partner, i take
full consideration about those aspects that might be rose up while selecting the
materials. We also considered it while selecting the topic. So, here we choose to
teach about vegetables that clearly will not affect them either from religion or
ethnic aspect. Next, based on standardized tests that had been conducted, their
performance levels are at intermediate level. So, to make sure the learning is
smooth, we use simple vocabulary that easy for them to understand.
Entry Competencies:
Next is the entry competency. The target pupils here are mostly have schemata
about the topic that we are going to teach. Some of them might acquire it
through visual aspect by seeing those kinds of vegetables on television or
experience it with following their parents to the market. In addition, nowadays,
technology is become salient and better year by year. They can get all of the
information with a click. Nevertheless, the schemata that they have is short term
memory only. It is because, it was not important things for them. For example,
one day, Ali follow his grandfather to the farm to pluck the vegetables and at the
farm, his grandfather introduces to him many types of vegetables. Maybe during
the process of plucking the vegetables, Ali still remember those names and after
that, he will forget or mismatch the vegetable's name with the correct object. So,

here we prepare a multimedia package to teach about the vegetable with it's
name to make them know and able to differentiate those vegetables. In the
slides, there's also a set of question which the pupils need to match the
vegetables' name with the correct object.
Learning Styles:
The majority of the pupils are visual and auditory learners. They learn better
through the use of visual aids and interactive software or multimedia sources
with excellent audio. According to ParentsConnect (2013), attention span in
children is not really defined and they are naturally easily distractible. These
pupils frequently having short attention span because they always constantly
looking for the next fun thing to do. So, by using multimedia package, we
actually cater their need which they tend to be more focus and attractive when
using visual.
Step 2 : State Objectives
The objectives are as follows:
a)

At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to identify nine types of
vegetables correctly.

b) At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to spell and pronounce nine types
of vegetables correctly
c)

At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to match the name of the
vegetables with the pictures correctly.

d) At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to answer ten questions correctly.
Step 3 : Select methods, media and materials:
Projector: The teacher will use the projector to allow the students to view a clip
showing the characters and the plot involved in the story.
Speakers: With the aid of speakers the students will be able to hear the clip
clearly. The speakers will enhance their learning experience. Teacher will also be
able to control the amount of noise in the class by using speaker.
Computer: A computer will be used to run slides on the overhead projector.
Step 4: Utilize Materials

Preview the materials
The teacher will listen to the clip ensuring that video is working and the audio is
clear. The teacher will also ensure that the speakers are working as well. The
teacher will test the overhead projector and the computer ensuring their
compatibility. Before begin to teach, teacher will run and check the presentation
whether it work smoothly and connected to the right hyperlink as well as to
ensure the arrangement of the slides is in the correct order.
Prepare the Materials
The teacher will set up the computer and overhead projector before the class
started. These equipments will then be turned on and tested to see whether it is
working or not.
Prepare the Environment
The seating arrangement will be taken into consideration to ensure all students
will have a clear view of the projection. The speakers will be place in an area
where all the students will be able to hear the story clearly.
Prepare the Learners
The teacher will inform the students of the activities planned before the class.
The teacher also gives hint on what will happen during the lesson (topic,
situation, etc). The students will also be informed of the exercises that they will
be given at the end of the class. By doing this the students will be comfortable
when the class begins. It also helps students to prepare themselves for the
upcoming exercises.
Provide the Learning Experience
The teacher teaches pupils and gives opportunities for them to learn by
themselves at the same time during the teaching and learning session. Besides,
the teacher needs to act as a source of reference for the pupils if they have any
questions related to the topic Through practice and games provided in the slides
will help to increase their understanding on the topic.
Step 5 : Require Learner Response
The teacher gives time for pupils to ask questions to be discussed together in the
class. This is also done to fill any information that is not clear and left the pupils

confused during the lesson. The pupils responses are important for the next
lesson and checking their understanding of the topic.
Step 6 : Evaluation
1

The teacher can evaluate pupils by using formative and summative

assessment. Formative assessment will help them identify their strengths and
weaknesses and target areas that need work and help teacher recognize where
pupils are struggling and address problems immediately. So our question that in
form of multiple choice question that required students to choose correct spelling
coincide with our objective to help them in pronunciation. Next, teacher can use
summative assessment. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate
student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some
standard or benchmark. Information from summative assessments can be used
formatively when student and teacher use it to guide their efforts and activities
in subsequent courses.
Conclusion
As a conclusion, it is very benefits to teachers when they used the Assure Model
in planning their lesson. All of these six main strategies will help them to come
out with good lesson that can suit the need of their pupils and at the same time
make the lesson success. Briefly, this model is very useful for a teacher to
control the class as well as to manage their time well and make the lesson
become more meaningful and purposeful to the pupils.
