(Component/Circuit) Condition Volts
Wagon
Check voltage between ground and indicated A/C control unit
terminals. See Fig. 2. See AIR INLET SENSOR, AIR (FIN) THERMOSENSOR,
IN-CAR TEMPERATURE SENSOR, & WATER TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT TEST
(WAGON) table.
DUAL-PRESSURE SWITCH
1) Turn engine off. Disconnect harness connector at dual-
pressure switch (located near condenser). Jumper harness connector.
Turn A/C switch and blower switch to ON position. Momentarily turn
ignition on and listen for compressor clutch engagement.
2) If compressor clutch does not engage, check evaporator
thermistor and engine coolant temperature switch. Check for a faulty
fuse. Repair or replace components as necessary. If compressor clutch
engages, go to next step.
3) Connect manifold gauge set to system, and check operating
pressures. On Sedan, dual-pressure switch should allow compressor
operation if system pressure is 30-384 psi (2-27 kg/cm ). On Wagon,
dual-pressure switch should allow compressor operation if system
pressure is 30-225 psi (2-22 kg/cm ).
4) On both models, if dual-pressure switch does not operate
within specified pressure range, discharge system using approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Replace dual-pressure
switch.
Wagon
1) Ensure damper is not in recirculated air or fresh air
position. Disconnect inside/outside air damper motor connector. See
Fig. 4. Apply battery voltage to motor connector terminal No. 1 and
ground terminal No. 2. Motor should operate when battery voltage is
applied. DO NOT continue applying battery voltage if motor does not
operate. Check wiring or replace defective motor if it does not
operate.
2) Apply battery voltage to motor connector terminal No. 1
and ground terminal 4. Motor should operate when battery voltage is
applied. DO NOT continue applying battery voltage if motor does not
operate. Check wiring or replace defective motor if it does not
operate.
A/C-HEATER RELAYS
1) Disconnect each relay. See Figs. 7-9. Check continuity of
each relay as follows. Connect negative battery lead to relay terminal
No. 4 and positive lead to terminal No. 2. See Fig. 10. Using an
ohmmeter, ensure continuity exists between relay terminals No. 1 and
3.
2) Disconnect battery. Ensure continuity does not exist
between relay terminals No. 1 and 3. Continuity should exist between
relay terminals No. 2 and 4. Replace relay if it does not test as
specified.
BLOWER SWITCH
1) Disconnect blower switch connector. With blower switch in
AUTO position, continuity should exist between blower switch terminals
No. 1 and 25 (Sedan) or terminals No. 8 and 63 (Wagon). See Fig. 11.
2) On Sedan, with blower switch in maximum speed position,
continuity should exist between blower switch terminals No. 3 and 25.
With blower switch in any position (except maximum), continuity should
exist between blower switch terminals No. 2 and 25.
3) On both models, operate blower switch. Measure resistance
between blower switch terminals No. 8 and 20 (Sedan) or terminals No.
8 and 63 (Wagon). With blower switch in minimum speed position,
resistance should be 250 ohms. With blower switch in maximum speed
position, resistance should be 1800-2200 ohms. Replace blower switch
if it does not test as specified.

PHOTO SENSOR
Photo sensor is located on top center of dash. Connect
voltmeter and battery to photo sensor terminals. See Fig. 13. Measure
voltage with photo sensor covered and uncovered. Compare voltage
readings. Voltage should be greater when sensor is not covered.
BLOWER MOTOR
Disconnect blower motor connector. Connect a 12-volt battery
to blower motor terminals. Blower motor should operate smoothly.
Reverse battery leads. Blower motor should operate smoothly in reverse
direction. Replace blower motor if it does not function as described.
CONTROL VALVE
Sedan
1) Operate A/C when vehicle interior temperature is high.
Connect a low pressure gauge to A/C compressor. Operate A/C with
engine running at idle.
2) Slowly increase engine speed while observing low pressure
gauge. If control valve is operating normally, low-side pressure will
drop slowly as engine speed is increased. When low-side pressure
reaches 25 psi (1.75 kg/cm ) for R-12 or 20-30 psi (1.4-2.1 kg/cm )
for R-134a, pressure will level off temporarily and then continue to
decrease as engine speed is further increased.
3) If control valve is defective, low pressure will drop in
direct proportion to increase in engine speed without temporarily
leveling off at the specified pressure level. Replace control valve if
it does not test as specified.
Resistance Check
Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between condenser fan
motor terminals No. 1 and 2. See Fig. 17. Resistance should be 290
ohms. Replace condenser fan motor if resistance is not as specified.
HEATER CORE
Removal & Installation
1) Drain coolant. Disconnect heater hoses. Remove passenger-
side undercover. See Fig. 23. Remove right foot shower duct. Remove
instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
2) Remove foot shower nozzle, lap cooler duct and center duct
assembly. Remove left foot shower duct, and front and rear center
reinforcement. Remove center stay assembly and distribution duct
assembly.
3) Remove evaporator bolts and nuts. Remove power transistor
and coolant temperature sensor. Remove air mix damper motor assembly.
Remove heater unit. Remove heater hose plate assembly and heater core.
4) To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill cooling
system and check cooling system for leaks.
EVAPORATOR
Removal
1) Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant
recovery/recycling equipment. Remove glove box and glove box outer
case. Disconnect and plug suction and discharge hoses.
2) Disconnect evaporator case drain hose. See Fig. 26. Remove
passenger-side undercover. Remove foot shower duct. Remove glove box
frame. On DOHC engines, remove belt lock controller. Remove evaporator
nuts and bolts. Remove evaporator.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Coat new "O" rings
with refrigerant oil before assembling connections. Evacuate and
recharge A/C system.
COMPRESSOR
Removal
1) Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant
recovery/recycling equipment. Remove compressor belt. Disconnect and
plug discharge and suction hoses at compressor.
2) Remove "O" rings and discard. On DOHC engines, remove
condenser fan assembly and alternator. Remove compressor with mounting
bolts set in compressor. On SOHC engines, remove compressor. On all
engines, use care not to spill compressor oil.
Installation
1) If a new compressor is being installed, measure amount
(ounces) of oil in old compressor. Subtract amount of oil in old
compressor from new compressor oil capacity (5.3 ounces). The
remainder of oil represents system oil capacity.
2) To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. On
DOHC engines, install compressor with mounting bolts set in
compressor. On all engines, coat new "O" rings with refrigerant oil
before assembling connections. Evacuate and charge system.
Installation
