Introduction

Introduction
The main aim of this booklet is to exemplify standards for those teaching Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design
(syllabus 0400) to show how different levels of candidates performance relate to the subjects assessment
objectives (AOs).
Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design comprises four components. In this booklet a range of candidate responses
for Component 1 has been chosen to exemplify achievement levels given in the syllabus assessment criteria
e.g. adequate, satisfactory, competent and so on. Separate Example Candidate Responses booklets are
available for Components 2 and 3. For candidate responses for Component 4, please refer to the Coursework
Training Handbook available on CD from www.cie.org.uk/cambridgefor/teachers/order-publications
On the following pages, the questions and assessment criteria are followed by candidate examples. For
each candidate the main piece and supporting studies are shown, followed by the marks awarded and
an examiner comment on performance. Comments are given to indicate where and why marks were
awarded, and how additional marks could have been obtained. In this way, it is possible to understand what
candidates have done to gain their marks and what they still have to do to improve their grades.
Past papers, examiner reports and other teacher support materials are available on Teacher Support at

Assessment at a glance

Assessment at a glance
All candidates take one of the following options:

Option A Component 1 and Component 2

Option B Component 1 and Component 3
Option C Component 1 and Component 4

Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400/01

Component 1 Broad-based assignment

Component 1 Broad-based assignment

This component is compulsory for all candidates; this is an externally set assignment which is marked by
Cambridge. This component gives the candidate the opportunity to explore any of the areas of study in
response to the selected questions. It could be observational or interpretative or a combination of both.
Alternatively, candidates may interpret any question as a design brief.
There are two parts to this component: the supporting studies and the controlled test. Cambridge will
assess both parts together and award a single holistic mark out of 100.

Supporting studies
In addition to the examination piece for Component 1, supporting studies should be submitted. During the
preparatory period, candidates are required to produce their supporting studies in response to one question.
They must bring this work to the start of the controlled eight-hour test, and these supporting studies
must then remain with the controlled test work under secure conditions. Candidates should refer to this
supporting work during the examination. Candidates cannot submit supporting studies after the start of the
first session and they should not produce additional supporting studies during the controlled eight-hour test.
Supporting studies must be submitted for external assessment together with the final examination work.
Teachers may hand out the question paper upon receipt. There is no limit on the amount of preparatory
time that candidates may have in order to prepare for the controlled test. However, teachers must be aware
that candidates entering for Option A (Components 1 and 2) should receive both the question papers at the
same time.

Questions
The questions act as starting points for the candidates focus of study, and all questions are broad and
flexible. Candidates should support the examination piece with investigation, research, evaluation and
development. The examination piece may be produced in any two- or three- dimensional medium or
combination of media, including printmaking, textiles, lens-based media and new digital technology.
Candidates may seek initial guidance regarding the selection of question and appropriate choice of materials
and processes at the start of the preparatory period from their teacher. The candidate is advised to research
and investigate ideas from first-hand studies of primary sources.

Paper 1 Broad-based assignment

The question paper may be handed to candidates as soon as it is received. The examination can be
scheduled at any time provided it is completed no later than 30 April for the June examination series
and 31 October for the November examination series.
READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST
Write your Centre number, candidate number, name and question number on the labels provided and attach
each one to the top right-hand corner of the front of each sheet of paper.
Answer one question.
In addition to the controlled eight-hour test, up to two sheets (four sides) of A2 paper of supporting studies
should be submitted. These supporting studies should be undertaken after receipt of this paper and prior to
the controlled eight-hour test. The supporting studies will act as the candidates reference material which will
inform their controlled eight-hour test.
Supporting studies must be taken into the examination room and must be submitted for external assessment
together with the final examination work. The submission will be assessed as a whole.
At the end of the controlled test, place the work produced on top of the supporting studies and fasten all your
work together in the top left-hand corner.
All questions in this paper carry equal marks.

Technical skills and aesthetic understanding are at the very highest level. The subject has been explored
using a range of media and different arrangements, all executed to a consistent highly accomplished
standard. Of particular interest is the last supporting sheet documenting the exploration of different
compositional arrangements through small sketches and photographs.

All the assessment objectives have been met to an outstanding level of achievement. The theme has
been explored in depth through the candidates own photography, and the final image has been developed
through an exploration of photo-collage, demonstrating highly accomplished skills in the production of a
totally original composition.

A very personal and conceptual approach to the title has been attempted in this submission. The exploration
both of the idea and the manipulation of images is its strength.
The documentation and critical evaluation of the journey the candidate has taken is very clear and provides
a good example of an excellent achievement level.

This is a small and detailed pen and ink composition developed from first hand research in the candidates
locality. The additional work of another artist has been well analysed and their stylistic influence can be seen
in the candidates own work.
A little more in-depth investigation and exploration would have secured marks in the excellent range in all
assessment domains.

The final composition has been developed using a photographic collage technique. All the images are
from the candidates own first-hand research, and this aspect of the submission has reached an excellent
standard.
However the process of collaging the individual images into a successful composition is much weaker, both
in the overall design and in the technical skills. This has reduced the submission overall to very good.

The final painting adopts an unusual format; a triptych and is the weakest part of the submission. The forms
are very flat with little tonal contrast or sense of light and shadow, and the three panels do not really visually
relate.
In the supporting studies, howerver, other domains have been met to a good or proficient level, with some
very good photographs submitted as evidence of first-hand research.

This is an example of a competent level of achievement. The main weakness is in AO2 where exploration
tends to be copies of the candidates photographs. However the range of drawing media and attention to
detail and texture is reflected in higher marks in AO4. This submission also shows how reference to the
work of other artists is relevant to the development of the candidates own response.

This candidate demonstrates some competence and has adopted an unusual and individual approach in
responding to this question. The candidate has used photography to record himself and his brother playing

The subject has been explored in some detail, demonstrating some competence in recording from direct
observation. Exploration and development is mostly confined to copies of the photographs in different
media. The addition of notes indicates some competence in personal evaluation and critical thinking.
The final drawing manages to render the form of the packets in a convincing manner, with the biscuits lying
within their packets. There could have been more emphasis given to tonal contrasts.

This is an example of an adequate achievement level. There is evidence of first-hand observation, with
photographs of the pose taken from different angles and viewpoints. It is a pity that so many of the
drawings do not directly relate to the pose.
The strength is in the final outcome which manages to capture the form of the head looking down
particularly well and also the foreshortening due to the high viewpoint.

An adequate standard has been reached in the investigation and the organisation of visual elements to

This is an example of a straightforward still-life approach. The candidate has attempted to record from direct
observation using their own photography and drawings. There is some evidence of exploration, but this is
confined to individual studies using different media. Little consideration has gone into exploring different
arrangements or alternative viewpoints.
The final work shows some evidence of analysis of form and structure, particularly in the detail of the
pineapple. Any sense of space created by overlapping the fruits is lost by a lack of tonal contrast and cast
shadows, however.

Research is largely confined to cut and pasted images from secondary sources. There is some limited
development of ideas, but the quality of any drawings is of a limited standard.
Whilst a final composition has been developed from images collected in the supporting studies, the work
demonstrates a limited expression of ideas and aesthetic judgements, and a limited ability to select and
control media and processes.
