Lenape tops Cherry Hill West, 51-48

Eighty-four percent of special education

students in Mt. Laurel School District
are in resource or inclusion classes
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Four years after falling short of
a state goal, the Mt. Laurel School
District is continuing to increase
the number of special education
students participating in general
education classrooms.
Diane Willard, director of child
study team services for the Mt.
Laurel School District, said the
district has continued to introduce more special education students into general education
classes this year, continuing an
upward trend from the last three
years.
The district's Least Restrictive
Environment initiative focuses
on merging special education and
general education students in the
same class. In 2014-15, the school
district has 501 special education
students, 84 percent of whom are
participating in either resource
or inclusion classes. Only 13 percent of students were placed in
self-contained programs. Three
percent of the students are sent
out of the district for special programs.

Willard said this push to have

special education students with
their general education peers has
been the key to making the district's program a success.
Its a very high percentage
and an excellent goal to achieve,
she said. With those strategies
we've been using, we have seen
our rate of classification go down
over the years.
The district employs LRE
guidelines as early as preschool.
Willard said in 2012-13, the district had only 67 percent of special education students in an inclusive setting. The number has
increased to 79 percent this year.
In addition, the number of special education students in preschool has gone down from 73 in
2012-13 to 57 in 2014-15.
The district has been able to increase the number of special education students in inclusive classes thanks to additional staff and
programming. Both Fleetwood
and Hillside schools have entirely
inclusive preschool classes.
Willard said the inclusive proplease see DISTRICT, page 10

in our opinion

Would Christie make a good prez?

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

New Jersey voters dont think so

Dan McDonough Jr.

ts no secret that our governor,

Chris Christie, is debating a run
for president of the United States
in 2016. While he hasnt officially announced whether he will throw his hat
into the ring, many believe he will do
so within the next few months.
In recent speeches, Christies focus
has been on bigger national issues.
Last summer and fall, during election
season, he traveled all over the country and helped fellow Republicans
campaign for gubernatorial seats.
This past weekend, he traveled to Iowa
for a Republican summit.
All signs point to Christie announcing his candidacy for president. But
would he make a good president?
According to a poll released last
week, New Jersey voters dont think

Your thoughts
Do you think our Gov. Christie would make
a good president? Share your thoughts on
this, and other topics, through a letter to
the editor.

so. A Quinnipiac University poll found

that 57 percent of registered voters in
New Jersey did not think Christie
would make a good president. Almost
one-third of Republicans polled didnt
think Christie would be a good president, along with 78 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of independents.
In the same poll, 52 percent of Garden State voters said they would
choose Democrat Hillary Clinton over
Christie in a hypothetical election be-

tween the two.

Christie has won two gubernatorial
elections in New Jersey by a wide
margin in a predominantly Democratic state but apparently our
states voters dont think hed be good
for the higher post. Its not altogether
surprising, and not a death sentence
for a potential bid for president either.
The last president from New Jersey,
Woodrow Wilson, didnt win his own
state, after all.
Maybe New Jersey voters just dont
think Christies personality would
work well running our country. Or
maybe they dont think his politics
would work on a global scale. Or
maybe they just want their governor
to concentrate on New Jersey while
hes still in that post.

HIB numbers decrease again for Mt. Laurel schools

District saw decrease in confirmed incidents despite an increase in investigations
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
For the third straight year, the Mt. Laurel School District has seen a drop in HIB
incidents during the first half of the
school year.
The Mt. Laurel School District reported
five confirmed Harassment, Intimidation
and Bullying incidents from Sept. 1
through Dec. 31, 2014. That number is down
from six reported incidents during the
same time period in 2013. Director of curriculum Sharon Vitella gave the semi-annual violence and vandalism report during
last weeks board of education meeting.
While the number of confirmed HIB incidents was down in the first half of 201415, the number of investigations increased.
There were 20 HIB investigations from September through December, an increase of

33 percent from the first half of 2013-14.

The number is also higher than the 19 investigations reported in the first half of
2012-13.
However, Vitella said no one should be
alarmed by any of the numbers. She said
the districts numbers remain low for a district with more than 4,000 students.
These number are really low, she said.
Just to have 20 HIB investigations and five
incidents is a low number.
Mt. Laurel finished the 2013-14 school
year with 14 confirmed HIB incidents, a
small number when compared to other
surrounding school districts such as
Moorestown, Evesham and Tabernacle.
Last years number was the lowest the district has had since HIB was first reported
as a separate category in 2011-12.
Vitella attributes the decreasing number
to a better understanding of what an HIB

incident is. She said teachers have been

able to differentiate whether kids are joking around or whether actual bullying is
taking place.
To help improve education on HIB, the
district has continued to hold training for
teachers and school staff. Vitellas report
showed the district has increased the number of HIB staff training sessions.
These are different training programs
we do for staff, teachers and bus drivers,
Vitella said.
The district also remains committed to
anti-bullying programs such as the Responsive Classroom and the Week of Respect in October. Vitella said the district
will continue to examine what areas it can
improve to further promote a culture of respect with the students.

What we have found with our

more children are declassified,

Willard said. We do what is best

for the child.
Across all grade levels, the vast

They need that intense therapy and that intense instruction,

the district fell short on a state
target for inclusion at the preschool level in 2010-11. As a result,
the district is in the second year
of a five-year corrective action
plan where districts are required
to analyze data and have state
monitors visit the schools for
classroom observations and staff
and parent interviews.
Willard noted the district was
1.3 percent off its goal in 2010-11.
It has exceeded its state target

corrective action plan to improve
its programming.
We have completed all of our

said.
The district is taking advantage
of suggestions from the state monitors to make further improvements. The district is planning to
add special education training for
art and music teachers prior to the
