RESIDENT PROFILE
His work took them to Omaha, Nebraska; Dubuque,
Iowa; Council Bluffs, Iowa; Salt Lake City, Utah; Vancouver, Washington; Kansas City, and finally Atlantic,
Iowa. Ken and Laurel have two children and two
grandchildren.
Laurel is a graduate of Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri. She was a homemaker and volunteer
at church and school. Having lived in a 100-year old
house for a number of years, Laurel learned how to
patch horsehair plaster walls, re-glaze windows, and
refinish wood floors --- skills which are now irrelevant
in their new house.
They moved to Festival in August 2014 and have
enjoyed the swimming pool, the fitness center, bocce
ball, movies, bingo, the welcoming friendliness of the
residents, and the sunshine. They recently joined
Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. Laurel is a member of Lady Putters Club and Ken joined
the Woodcrafters Club.

With February being American Heart Month, we should all take time to learn a few
things about the importance of heart health. The heart is the most important
muscle in the body and works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week without
any rest. We all have at least some risk factors for heart disease but some risk
factors we cannot control include age, gender and family history. Risk factors we
can control are obesity, being sedentary, smoking, high blood pressure and high
cholesterol. Below are some statistics about heart disease:
An estimated 82.6 million American adults (>1 in 3) have 1 or more types of
cardiovascular disease. Of these, 40.4 million are estimated to be 60 years of
age.
Average age of first heart attack is 64.5 years for men and 70.3 years for women.
One in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure.
In adults, total cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher are considered high risk.
Levels from 200 to 239 mg/dL are considered borderline-high risk.
Among Americans ages 5564, 16% of men and 30.5% of men have total blood
cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher.
For ages 6574 10.9% of men and 24.2% of women have high cholesterol.
Among people ages 5564, 79.7% of men and 69.6% of women are overweight
or obese, defined as a BMI (body mass index) of 25.0 kg/m2 and higher.
In 2007, cardiovascular disease caused the deaths of 391,886 males and
cancer killed 292,857 males.
Coronary heart disease is the single major cause of death of American males,
killing 216,050 in 2007. This represents 53.2% of deaths.
In part because women have heart attacks at older ages than men do, theyre
more likely to die from them within a few weeks.
More than one in three female adults has some form of cardiovascular disease.
Since 1984, the number of cardiovascular disease deaths for females has
exceeded those for males.
In 2007, cardiovascular disease was the cause of death in 421,918 females.
Females represent 51.8 percent of deaths from cardiovascular disease.
To improve cardiovascular health and control heart disease risk factors, follow a lowfat diet and get plenty of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise includes brisk walking,
swimming, cycling and running. To maintain current heart health, aerobic exercise
should be done three times per week and twenty minutes each time. To improve
and maximize heart health, aim for thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic exercise most
days per week (5-6 days). Aerobic exercise should be done at an intensity in which
a breathy conversation can be held. Breathing hard enough to prevent talking is
too intense. Easy conversation means effort needs to be increased.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer. Lets take the month of February
to improve our cardiovascular health through exercise and proper diet.
