Final Project Value: 20% of year mark

Note: This project will not be accepted until all other course requirements have been met (Assignments and
Blogs)

Your task is to build a “virtual” computer from scratch, with the help of an online parts and accessories store.
(Tiger Direct)

1. Think about what your main use for a computer is. Maybe its schoolwork, maybe it’s a small business,
maybe its for gaming, maybe its for recording music, or maybe its something not on the list. Have this
choice approved by your instructor.

√ This is incredibly important as the components you choose will be based on their practicality for
their intended use.
√ For example,
√ a “homework” computer might need a printer, scanner, etc.
√ a “gaming” computer might need upgraded video and audio devices, speaker systems, etc.
√ a “video editing” computer might need firewire connections, increased RAM, and upgraded
storage.

2. Create a registration using your school e-mail account.

3. Next, sign in to TigerDriect.ca with your new login.

4. Your task is to pick out every, single part you require to build a computer and add them to your Wish
List. You obviously do not purchase anything but, the shopping cart will keep a running list of
everything you need.

Stipulations:
√ No bare bones machines (these are partially built machines)
√ No laptops or Apple computers please
√ You have a budget of $1000, including taxes and delivery, so you have to decide what components
you can splurge on and what are less important so you can budget.
√ You must assume that you are starting completely from scratch so, you will need most of the
following components:
i. Display device xii. Hard Drive
ii. Keyboard xiii. Sound card
iii. Pointing device xiv. Video Card
iv. Speakers xv. Gamepad
v. Case xvi. USB hub
vi. Power supply xvii. Ethernet connection
vii. Cooling system (maybe wireless if you
viii. Motherboard want to purchase a
ix. Processor wireless router as well)
x. RAM xviii. Other?
xi. CD/DVD
5. Don’t forget, you must ensure that all parts will fit together. This will require some research to ensure
that all components will work together.
√ My suggestion is to choose a mother board and processor that will work together, then get a case that
will fit them, and then choose the rest of your hardware based on your motherboard.

6. Once you have your parts list, you will create a flyer, much like one you would see in a newspaper or
sale. Your flyer must include:
√ A slogan that states the computer’s intended use (homework, video editing, etc.)
√ A picture of the completed computer (just the case, monitor, and any other external parts)
√ A complete list of all components
√ It must fit on one page (the program is your choice: Word, Publisher, etc.)

7. Finally, in another document, create a table that shows the part, manufacturer, model #, image, price,
link (in Tiger Direct) and why it was chosen for your machine.

Example:

Computer Manufacture Model # Image Link in Reason for Price

Part r Tiger choosing this
Direct part
Video ATI Radeon XFX link I chose this $79.97
Card Rade video card
on because it
HD allows me to
4650 connect
Video more than
Card one monitor
and since my
PCI slots are
full, this can
use the AGP
slot I have
open on my
motherboard.

Both documents must include your name in the file name and be sent to Mr. Sturgeon’s e-mail upon
completion. Don’t submit paper so it doesn’t get lost.
