Dear Christian Friends,

How I enjoy writing to you to report what we have been doing. Not that it has been so spec
tacular, but it gives us a chance for retrospection to see what we can do to better use our time.
In the last newsletter you read about the work which was
just started at the university. I am happy to report that each
day I have been there has been just as exciting as that first

week was.

One day a boy brought two of his girl friends who asked a
lot of silly questions about American customs. But finally they
asked,
"What is Easter?," and this gave me an excellent opportunity to tell them about the resurrection of Christ.

Teaching college students in the cafe

A question vrtiich is typical of Chinese thought was, "If there is only one God, how can there
be so many different races in the world?" The Orientals believe there are many gods.
Then there are statements like you would expect to hear in the good old U.S. "If there is a
God and He is a God of love, we won't have to worry because He will save us anyway."
What does all this come to? Sometimes I begin to wonder iryself. But when you hear a ques
tion like this you wonder no more "If I do believe what do I have to do to be saved?" It is
with excitement that I read to them the answer Peter gave to men who asked him the same question
1900 years ago.
"Repent and be baptized..."
I know by our discussions that they are beginning
to believe and wonder. They are starting to have doubts about their pet theories of creation and
life.

ing.

Now, they have run out of questions, apparently, and therefore, interest seemed to be slack
So, to go on, I am starting to teach "Ten Timely Truths." The first truth is "The Bible is

the Word of God."

The church at Shilin really seems to be growingnot as much in

numbers as in the development of the Christians. Three of the young

men are teaching Sunday School.

days after his spiritual birthday, Mr. Suen

was "^rdajned "^a-t Sunday morning the whole church service was spent
for tHeordination.

After the Charge, I handed Mr. Suen his ordination

certificate, which I had made myself, and Mr. Suen then spoke for about
twenty minutes.
Tears came to his eyes as he told of his thankfulness

for his new position and as he challenged the Christians to pursue ser-

vice for Christ.

Almost every Christian was there, v^ich added to a grand total of 19.

To demonstrate the real leadership qualities of Mr. Suen and the effectiveness of a national
preacher, I would like to tell you about the decision of Mr, Too, Mr. Too had been coining to a
few services ever since the Christmas play, in which he played a part,
Mcther-had been giving
him a part in her weekly Acts dramas and had asked him to translate several dramas for her. Sun
day morning, the day Mr, Suen was ordained. Mother said she thought Mr. Too was close to making a
decision, I gave an invitation that morning, but Mr, Too didn't budge. After my invitation, Mr,

Suen said a few words and then said, (translated to me later), "It still'isn-iate." Mr, Too
stood up and gave his life to the Lord. The next Sunday,.. February 5th, Mr. Tqp.-was baptized for
the remission of sins,

We were expecting some guests from the United States on February 11th Mr. and Mrs, Marshall

for dinner and to show slides on the Holy Land. However, their flight was cancelled in Tokyo
because of snow. However, that same afternoon Dr. andMrs, Davis called us and said that they had
just been in Japan visiting their good friends, the Mark Maxeys, and would like to get in touch
with us.
So Davises took the Marshalls' place for that evening. They also attended our Sunday
services and sang a special Sunday morning,

Sunday

afternoon the Marshalls arrived at 2:l5 and showed Holy Land slides at 3^30 at Mom's

house to the young people,

Mr. Marshall went to Shingwang with us to show them at 7:30.

That night, on the way home. Dr. andMrs. Davis, Mr. Marshall,
Janet and I stopped to eat at a sidewalk cafe. We had "Ho Goa"
or "Hot Pot,"
This dish is made on a firepot put in a hole in

the middle of the table. On this is a kettle of boiling water.

You put the vegetables and meat in to suit yourself. We boiled

the food and eating utensils to sterilize them, prayed for protection and dug in,

Dear Christian Friends,

She weighed eight pounds, 1C% ounces.

Already, we seem to be able to notice distinct characteristics in her; and she, of course, is
the cutest baby we have ever seen.

If I am real sneaky and watch closely, I can manage to get into the room when Janet is feed
ing the baby. What a Joy it is to hold her and watch the faces she makes.

Although I could spend the whole newsletter telling about our preclous bundle, there are other things that we need to report,

Easter Sunday seems like a long time ago, but the things that we

remember of that day are still very fresh in our minds. At six o'clock l-r-

that morning we met at Mother's house for sunrise service. As we sat

on the rooftop reading all the scriptures concerning the resurrection !>' /

and singing hymns, the sunrise was beautiful. Yes, the story of the
resurrection is beautiful, too. Why? Because it is the resurrection of

Dear Christian Friends,

I have

settled down. We left Taiwan on May 11th;
and after traveling by two ships, two trains,
a truck, and finally our car, we arrived
in Wabash on June 1^.

That meant that our

We were able to be with Mcther (Isabel Dittemore) as far

from Taiwan to Japan. She went this far with us to work
more Japanese radio programs in Hiroshima. During our

thirty-hour stay we met a lot of missionaries in Tokyo, which

was a great thrill. The day we left was Janet's birthday, so
Mother took us all out to have "Sukiyaki" to celebrate.
When

we left

Taiwan

we left a big part of our hearts

there. We miss the friends we made while we were there.

Ifost

of all, we miss those we worked with every day for Christ.

We are still very concerned about those we were working with
who still have not accepted Christ, Please pray for Mrs. Dit

there in the difficult field of Taiwan.

Of course, when we went to Taiwan we noticed how differ
