PCK 3 : Equilibrium and thermometry

Objectives : to design and build effective food container to keep your things hot and
cold.
Materials :
Food (coke, hot nudget, polystyrene (1m x 1m), ice, cardboard box, brown paper,
cotton wool, plastic bags, sawdust, coconut husk, glue, string, and cellophane tape,

Question
1. Are your models effective? Why or why not/
Yes. Because we picked the correct materials given. Polystyrene acts as a
very good heat and cold insulator. Plus the wool ,sawdust and coconut husk
helps a lot
2. We use a to keep our food cold. How does it perform this task?
it compresses air in the pipe's behind the fridge and places it into chamber, to
keep it cold it takes air from within the fridge and re-compresses it.A
refrigerator will keep food cold by converting gas into liquid, then liquid into

vapour. Basic physics maintains that when two surfaces come in contact with
the other, the surface with the higher temperature will cool to equal the
temperature of its alternate. Coils and metal parts inside a refrigerator are
loaded with cold liquid. The liquid inside generates cold air outside the coils.
This happens when the heat from inside the refrigerator reduces its
temperature to "match" temperatures with the cold liquid inside the coils.
When you open a refrigerator door, you generally will notice a dramatic
change in air temperature. Food inside is kept cold because the refrigerator is
able to convert gas into liquid. That liquid passes through a series of parts that
can also opt to change that liquid into vapour--this is done by compressing
molecules
Mastery of knowledge and skills questions.
1. What have you learnt from these activities?
I learn to keep hot and cold food more effectively. I also learn how to design a
food container about how to maintain the hot and cold of the food or drink. I
also know about how to choose good materials for keep the heat and cold
food in a long time.
2. Which part of the primary science curriculum teaches this particular topic?
Year 5 Material
3. Discuss how you can use these activities in your teaching and learning?
I can teach the pupils about how to keep maintain the temperature of our body
when we at the hot condition or cold condition. Example when the surrounding
is hot, we must prevent to wear black cloth to make our body not sweating
and maybe dehydrate. Besides that, I would teach the student to know the
properties of some materials due to important of using the different materials
like cotton, nylon, and others. In addition, the pupils also know about how to
be creative to design the simple experiment about how to maintain the ice not
to become easily melting.
4. What was the role of the teacher in these activities?

The role of the teacher in the above practical is teacher act as facilitator.
Teacher also can act as demonstrator and be as observer.
