Building Performance Simulation

The shortest definition of building performance simulation: Using a computer model to predict what will
happen in the real world in terms of Energy Modelling, Natural Ventilation, Daylight Simulation, and
Thermal Comfort Analysis.
It allows design team to accurately assess various "what-if "scenarios during all building design stages,
optimize and integrate different systems(such as lighting and HVAC) and explore synergies between
them. It draws on many disciplines, including physics, mathematics, material science, biophysics and
human behavioural, environmental and computational sciences. This has sparked a new agenda focusing

on the effectiveness of simulation in building life-cycle processes.

Building Energy Simulation starts with developing a computerized "virtual model" of the building based
on the architectural building plans and specifications. This baseline model complies with widely approved
and acknowledged international standards and/or the current local guidelines. We then improve on that
model to optimize building performance and achieve the desired goals of energy efficiency of the
proposed projects elements and systems:
Building Envelope (Wall, Windows, Roof etc.)
HVAC systems and its components.
Day lighting Simulation for optimizing natural lighting and lighting controls.

creativity, as well as the development of sustainable buildings.

Benefits
Building Energy Simulation is the key to designing cost-effective envelopes and HVAC systems. It is a
powerful tool that architects, engineers and developers use to determine optimum form, size, orientation
and engineering systems that affect overall building energy consumption.
Effective building performance simulation can reduce the environmental impact of the built environment,
improve indoor quality and productivity, and facilitate future innovation and technological progress in
construction.
Building Performance Simulation is an extremely powerful way to analyze, assess and quantify different
design concepts and low carbon technologies.
It can achieve significant energy reductions, ensure occupant comfort, and support informed, multidisciplinary decision-making.
There are many benefits to performing energy modeling on your building:
Energy simulation provides an independent evaluation of the energy efficiency of your proposed new
design.
Energy simulation can provide you with the most cost effective design to meet your environmental
goals.
Energy simulation quantifies the operating savings over the life of the building.
Reduce the overall energy use in your building
Specify energy-efficient equipment and technologies
Evaluate the annual impact on energy use and operating costs of different types of equipment and
systems
Optimize buildings reduce construction costs by targeting "over-engineered" solutions

Green Building Commissioning

Commissioning is a quality assurance-based process that delivers preventive and predictive maintenance
plans, tailored operating manuals and training procedures for all users to follow. Essentially, the
commissioning process formalizes review and integration of all project expectations during planning,
design, construction, and occupancy phases by inspection and functional performance testing, and
oversight of operator training and record documentation.
Commissioning is an all-inclusive process for all the planning, delivery, verification, and managing risks
to critical functions performed in, or by, facilities. Commissioning ensures building quality using peer
review and in-field or on-site verification.
Commissioning also accomplishes higher energy efficiency, environmental health, and occupant safety
and improves indoor air quality by making sure the building components are working correctly and that
the plans are implemented with the greatest efficiency for these systems:
HVAC system
Solar Water Heating system
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Building Management System (BMS)
Lighting
Electrical system
Plumbing & Fire Fighting System
Phases of Commissioning: Pre-Design Phase: Understanding of Owner's Project Requirements & Basis of Design considered for
the

project

Design Phase: Technical review of design documents and defining contractor's responsibilities for
the

construction phase

Construction Phase: Verify technical submittals and installation of equipment on-site

Post-Occupancy Phase: Verify the actual performance of equipment compared to equipment
design

standards

Our services
I Green Group has extensive experience in Green Building Certification Commissioning for New
Construction as well as for Existing Buildings. Our experience and expertise helps us guide our clients
towards the development of sustainable and high-performance buildings which reduce the operating
costs, are healthier for occupants and less damaging to the environment. It also helps the projects
achieve the Fundamental & Enhanced Commissioning Credits in several rating systems. We are currently
involved in the commissioning of existing and new construction projects including individual houses,
apartments, warehouses, industrial buildings, hospitals and commercial and residential buildings, as well

Energy Auditing
An energy audit is an inspection, survey and analysis of energy flows for energy conservation in a
building, process or system to reduce the amount of energy input into the system without negatively
affecting the output(s). The first step in making your facility more energy-efficient and establishing an
energy management program.
The Energy Auditing Process:
The analysis of building and utility data, including study of the installed equipment and analysis of
energy bills;
The survey of the real operating conditions;
The understanding of the building behavior and of the interactions with weather, occupancy and
operating schedules;
The selection and the evaluation of energy conservation measures;
The estimation of energy saving potential;
The identification of customer concerns and needs.
Energy Auditing levels of analysis:
Level 0 Benchmarking:
This first analysis consists in a preliminary Whole Building Energy Use (WBEU) analysis based on the
analysis of the historic utility use and costs and the comparison of the performances of the buildings to
those of similar buildings. This benchmarking of the studied installation allows determining if further
analysis is required;
Level I Walk-through audit:
Preliminary analysis made to assess building energy efficiency to identify not only simple and low-cost
improvements but also a list of energy conservation measures (ECMs, or energy conservation
opportunities, ECOs) to orient the future detailed audit. This inspection is based on visual verifications,
study of installed equipment and operating data and detailed analysis of recorded energy consumption
collected during the benchmarking phase;
Level II Detailed/General energy audit:
Based on the results of the pre-audit, this type of energy audit consists in energy use survey in order
to provide a comprehensive analysis of the studied installation, a more detailed analysis of the facility, a
breakdown of the energy use and a first quantitative evaluation of the ECOs/ECMs selected to correct
the defects or improve the existing installation. This level of analysis can involve advanced on-site
measurements and sophisticated computer based simulation tools to evaluate precisely the selected
energy retrofits;
Level III Investment-Grade audit:
Detailed Analysis of Capital-Intensive Modifications focusing on potential costly ECOs requiring
rigorous engineering study.

Green Product& Technologies

Consumer choices reflect not only price and quality preferences but also social and moral values, as
witnessed in the remarkable growth of the global market for organic and environmentally friendly
products. Building on recent research on behavioral priming and moral regulation, we found that mere
exposure to green products and the purchase of such products lead to markedly different behavioral
consequences. In line with the halo associated with green consumerism, results showed that people act
more altruistically after mere exposure to green products than after mere exposure to conventional
products. However, people act less altruistically and are more likely to cheat and steal after purchasing
green products than after purchasing conventional products. Together, our studies show that
consumption is connected to social and ethical behaviors more broadly across domains than previously
thought.

Sustainability Training

LEED Accreditation
There are three (3) types of credentials currently offered through the Green Building Certification
Institute (GBCI). Of those, two require passing an exam as illustrated below:
LEED Green Associate
The LEED Green Associate credential is intended for professionals who want to demonstrate green
building expertise in non-technical fields of practice. GBCI has created the LEED Green Associate
credential, which denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction and operations. This is a great
destination credential for individuals seeking knowledge about the high-performance building industry.
Product manufacturers, lawyers and non-technical construction professionals are among many individuals
that would benefit from this credential.
LEED Accredited Professional.
This specialty credential is for those professionals that work on LEED projects, or need to know more
