February 2015

Welcome Back to Fortune School for Week 24

of the 2014 - 2015 school year. It was an honor
to march with many of you at the MLK Day
event. Our FS community is definitely growing
as we had a record number of families and staff
in attendance. Lets continue to exemplify Dr.
Kings dream with our daily work.
We have 27 days of instruction remaining in the
2nd Trimester. Lets use each minute of each
day to help our students continue to grow in
character and academically. Now is the time to
re-focus ourselves our students to learning and
leadership goals. Please help each of your
scholars to set and relentlessly pursue academic
and character goals for the next 27 days of
school until Spring Intersession. These shortterm goals should be connected to the Big
Goals we set at the beginning of the school
year. Please continue to communicate with
your scholar and remind them about these
goals and weekly progress.
Be sure to share words of encouragement
every day with staff members, other parents as
well as with your scholars.

Thursday-Formal Dress
Scholars will be sent home if
they are not in their dress
uniform.
*Khaki pants-white collar shirt-tie and
sweater*

Celebrate Black History!

Our Scholars have worked hard to make
beautiful Black History Posters. Please stop by
and enjoy their work displayed in our office, hall
way and classrooms.

Smarter Balanced Assessment

Practice: We are about four months away from
administering the Smarter Balanced Assessment in
grades 3rd - 5th. I want to ensure all of our scholars
are receiving the necessary practice needed to be
successful on the test. Teacher Leaders in grades 3rd
5th, it is necessary for you to navigate the Smarter
Balanced Assessment website to check out the
practice test and Equation Response Editor tool
tutorial. I recommend all Parents become familiar
with some of the content, and then have your
scholars take the practice test to become familiar
with navigating through the system. The first
link below is the link to the Smarter Balanced
practice tests. The second link below is a link that
allows our scholars to see a tutorial that explains
how to use the Equation Response Editor tool, and
they can practice using the tool in which they will
use to enter answers, expression, or equations.

School Parking Lot Safety

When you are dealing with hundreds of students
coming to school in the morning and leaving in the
afternoon/evening, the school parking lot can be a
very chaotic place.
Student safety is always a concern for school staff,
but keeping children safe in the parking lot
requires the cooperation of everyone from school
staff to parents and the children themselves.
Here are a few safety tips that drivers should observe
when dropping children off at school and
picking them up:
Obey the speed limit (5MPH) and traffic rules
Obey ALL the schools drop-off and pick up rules
Be courteous to other drivers
