AMS Master SHE Pack: Revision 6.0

The causes of construction related incidents and injuries are well known. The challenge
however is to ensure that effective preventative and precautionary measures are implemented
and maintained. AMS will provide the framework for the Contractor to execute the work in a safe
manner. As Specialist Contractor, the Contractor will remain responsible to ensure the safe
execution of all work for the duration of the project. SHE forms parts of the tender adjudication
criteria and the Contractor shall ensure that SHE documentation is submitted as specified.
(Contractor Project SHE Specification Section 5 Document 5.1)
The following is a summary non-negotiable safety initiative that the Contractor shall implement
and maintain: Risk Assessments, DSTIs, Planned Task Observations and recording of SHE
Incidents and trend analysis.
A CD containing the AMS SHE Pack is included in the tender documentation. This CD contains
comprehensive documentation on the AMS SHE system and requirements The essence of the
SHE documentation is summarized in the Assessment Protocol (Section 5 Document 5.3). The
implementation and compliance with all Assessment elements will be a pre-requirement for
work to commence on site. This document is only a guide to assist the Contractor in preparing
the SHE budget when tendering. The issue of the CD does not relief the Contractor from
complying with all legal requirements if not specifically required.
The following is a summary of the critical few precautionary measures, compliance of which
will prevent most construction incidents and injuries. Implementation of these approved
preventative and precautionary measures are mandatory: Safe vehicles & equipment, Erecting
of barricading (Openings, edges, excavations), Safe scaffolding, Attachment of people & or
tools in elevated positions, adherence to lock-out, tag out and or permits, Allowing no overhead
work, Safe material handling stacking & storage, Safe lifting & rigging practices, The use of
provided PPE, Adequate machine guarding, Supervision not condoning at risk behaviours &
Compliance to SHE standards. The most important site safety requirements are summarised in
Contractor Project SHE Specification, also a critical guidance document when preparing your
tender and SHE budget.

Construction Regulations, The Mine Health & Safety Act 29/1996, and Minerals Act 50/1991 and
Regulations, Compensation For Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act 130/193 is a minimum
requirement, but does not exclude you from compliance with all other relevant legislation.
