Analizing Textbook according to Garnier and Cunningsworth

There are several key question to evaluate the textbook (Garnier,2002)


1. Do the exercises and activities in the textbook contribute to students acquisition?
In this book Interactive English the student is guided to do role play to practise
their conversation with their partner in the class. The dialogue is used related to their
life-context, such as the simple conversation.
2. Are the exercise balanced in their format, containing both controlled and free
practise?
Grammar which is studied in this book is about subject pronouns and to be, there are
several exercise which appropiate with the materials. The exercise such as listening to
complete the dialogue with selection answer, fill in the blank to complete the personal
data, match the picture with the expressions, and pair in work do conversation and
present it in front of the class.
3. Are the exercises progressive as the students move through the textbook?
From the material which is learnt and from that learning goals such as : greet others,
introduce ourselves, give personal information, and talk people and job, it is expected
to the students get much new knowledge and with many exercises they will be able to
increase their ability to communicate in their environment.
4. Are the exercises varied and challenging?
It should be challenging the students from the kinds of the exercises such as listening
to complete the dialogue with selection answer, fill in the blank to complete the
personal data, match the picture with the expressions, and pair in work do
conversation and present it in front of the class.
Cunningsworth in 1995 (Richards, 2001,p. 274-275) suggested checklist for
evaluation and selection of textbook as follows:
1. Aims and approaches
Interactive English book have several aims such as greet others, introduce ourselves,
give personal information, and talk people and job. It is suitable to the stiudent to get
the ability to communicate with their environment. This book good enough as the
source and cover what the students need, and about the teaching and learning style
this book guide the students to make a role play and do the exercise in a pair.
2. Design and organization
The component to support listening the teacher use the cassette and the student should
be able to listen carefully and comprehend about the materials which is conveyed. It
book has the topic about to know others, speaking and listening skill especially in
chapter 1, the function it self to make the students are able to communicate with the
ather and use simple tense. Subject pronouns and to be as the grammars material.

The book serve the list of vocabulary which is related for the materials, the teacher
teach how to pronouns the word and also spell the word, the student can increase their
vocabulary and it helps the student to make the conversation more easily.
Skills
Chapter 1 more emphasis the skill in speaking and listening.
Topic
The topic about going to know others, and this book try to make the students interest
to make the good conversation with the people in their environment, so that it is
expected to the students are able to communicate with their social environment.
Methodology
The method which is used is role play, and the level in this book is novice level, to
make the materials can be applied do in pair or group, the technique it self to convey
the materials to the student it can use three phase technique.
Teachers book
I cant found what book is used by the teacher to develop the material. In this book it
self give the several materials related to the topic and goals it will be able to guide the
students to cover their ability, so they are able to make conversation and do the task
correctly.
Practical consideration
According to the book itself, I think it not too much using money, the student just
follow the material and do the task,may be the teacher will help the students with
other media. The material not to hard for the second grade junior high school, and it
easy to be comprehended by the students.
So this book Interactive English good enough to be a resources for the
second grade Junior High School, the material related to the goals available in that
book and it enough to guide and stimulate the students learning in the class. May be
for the method the teacher it self should have the other method to make the student
more interest to study diligently.
