Lessons from the Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Whether sharing this movie with friends, family, young, or old, this movie provides a
good opportunity to discuss the following life lessons.
Death is Inevitable
Benjamin is faced with the reality of death more than typical individuals, having been
born at the age that is most usually associated with death. Death seems to always be on
his mind, and as he encounters various characters throughout the movie that face death in
their own ways, he learns subtle details about the experience of death that many people
don’t consider.
Cherish Each Day of Your Life

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” challenges the idea that life would be better if
we could erase its hurts. Characters in the movie repeatedly deliver a message about the
importance of cherishing each day, whether it brings good or ill. The movie also
encourages us to cherish the people around us while they are still alive. For instance,
before his father dies, Benjamin carries him down to a lake to see the sunrise one last
time as it was his father’s greatest joy to see the sunrise.

Acceptance Rather Than Denial

According to the film, the right response to loss is acceptance rather than denial. The
tugboat captain, Mike, uttered, "You can be as mad as a dog at the ways things went, you
can swear and curse the fates, but when it comes to the end, you have to let go."

New Beginnings

Benjamin Button told his daughter, Caroline, "It's never too late, or in my case, too early,
to be whatever you want to be. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If not, I hope you
have the strength to start all over again." This film taught us to be brave to stand up again
and to start all over again when we fell or failed in the middle of our life journey. It also
implied that we should always have the courage to find life’s purpose, to discover and
fulfill our destiny.

Love and Compassion

Queenie immediately chooses to adopt the apparently unwanted child-Benjamin Button.

She does so --the movie shows us-- because she has love enough even for this odd
foundling. Queenie cares for Benjamin's physical and spiritual needs. She had showered
him with motherly love. And she tells him his life has purpose even though he looks
different ("You're on your own route, Benjamin. ... Be thankful for what you've been
given").

Mercy and Forgiveness

Eventually, Thomas Button apologizes for abandoning Benjamin. And at the end,
Benjamin had forgiven his father. What is more, before his father dies, Benjamin carries
him down to a lake to see the sunrise one last time. This shows that Benjamin had
forgiven his father and he hopes to do something for his old man as a son for the last
time.

Ensuring Security and Stability Of Loved Ones

Whether his solution is proper or is debatable: Benjamin leaves Daisy so that she can find
a husband and father for their daughter (which she does).
(Benjamin asks, "How can I be a father when I'm headed in the other direction?" Daisy
tells him, "Be there for as long as you can, and I'll accept the consequences." As he keeps
regressing, he says, "You're going to have to find a real father for her. She needs a father,
not a playmate.")
Benjamin left to ensure that his daughter can live a normal life, and to avoid burdening
his wife when he gets younger each day and eventually become a kid. However,
Benjamin never wavers in his devotion. He sends birthday cards and notes to his daughter
expressing his affection from afar. Moreover, he also left all his fortune to his wife and
daughter before he leaves.

Everyone Is Special In Their Own Way

This movie portray that every person has something special to offer despite their physical
limitations. With any person we meet, we have to look beyond the physical appearance to
reach the heart. Not only does Benjamin Button remind us that beauty is not just skin
deep; it encourages us to discover what may lie dormant inside those we love most. It’s a
film about learning to make the most of life when everything seems to be against you. As
Queenie says more than once, “We’re all heading in the same direction; we just take
separate routes to reach there”. The whole moral of the story is that we need to take
control of our lives. We should do whatever it is that we want to do most, be the person
we want to be, and that we can do that at any time, no matter how young or old we are.
