St Charalambos is one of our most wonderful Hieromartyrs, who lived to a
very old age in the city of Magnesia in Thessaly during the late second
and early third century. He was 113 years of age when he was
martyred.
Emperor Severos had appointed Lucian as Governor of the territory of
Magnesia where St Charalambos served as Christian Priest and Bishop,
who had infuriated the Roman authorities because he converted so
many pagans to our Faith.
Governor Lucian immediately ordered St Charalambos to be arrested and
forced to honour the stone gods, which he unwaveringly refused to do.
As expected, this elderly Saint was then subjected to the brutal tortures of
the Roman executioners, who scourged him with whips, and then ripped
his skin to shreds with iron claws, yet he stood firm in his Faith and
showed no hatred nor malice towards his persecutors.
St Charalambos suffered terribly for his unwavering Faith in God. He was
beaten, burnt, dragged through the streets, crucified...
Despite his indescribable suffering, St Charalambos gave thanks to our
Lord, and his Spiritual Strength amazed and even shocked the torturers
and those who witnessed the unspeakable brutality imposed upon such
an aged, humble and faithful Hierarch.
Many witnesses converted to Christianity, whereupon the Roman
Commander, Lucius, was forced to behead two of his officers (who are
Commemorated as St Porphyrios and St Vaptos.) Three women who
been watching, also publicly confessed their Faith in Christ, and were
subsequently executed.
Commander Lucius was incensed, and no doubt, scared by these public
Confessions of Faith in Christ, so he seized the cruel implements from the
executioners and began to torture St Charalambos himself.
But, in an instant, his forearms were severed at the elbow as if by an
invisible sword, and hung from the Martyr's body. Lucius spat in the face
of St Charalambos in his abject terror, and his head immediately turned
around so that he faced backwards!
The horrified Roman Commander then begged for mercy, and by the
Intercessory Prayers of St Charalambos, he was restored. To everyones
astonishment, the fierce Roman Commander, Lucius, knelt before St
Charalambos, begged his forgiveness, repented his sins and asked to
be Baptised.
Superstitious fear spread throughout the pagan city. People repented their
sins and begged for Mercy from the All Powerful and Mighty God Whom
St Charalambos professed. Many sought Holy Baptism and Life in Christ.
Governor Lucian stopped persecuting the Christians until he could report to
Emperor Severos.
Meanwhile, St Charalambos, having been set free, continued to perform
many Divine Miracles such as healing the sick and the lame, granting
sight to the blind, and even raising some from the dead.
The whole region came to believe in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Emperor Septimos Severos was in Pisidian, Antioch, when he heard what
had occurred. He was outraged and sent three hundred troops to arrest
St Charalambos, to drive a spike into his spine and then drag him from
Magnesia all the way to Antioch.

ST CHARALAMBOS,
THE
God,
in
my
Then a young man who had been dead for three days was brought in and
he was Resurrected by God through the Intercessory Prayers of St
Charalambos.
Someone remarked to the Emperor that obviously St Charalambos was a
sorcerer, and when Severos asked his deputies to explain to him Who
Christ is, St Aristarchos stepped forward and spoke the Truth about our
Lord and Saviour.
Angered and threatened by his words, Emperor Septimus Severus,
encouraged by his Prefect, Crispus, most arrogantly and foolishly
declared war on Heaven - challenging Christ to come down from
Heaven so that they could fight Him: "Come down, O Christ, to Earth, that
we may fight! Behold, my army will war against Thee! If Thou will not
come down, I will pull down the firmament and extinguish the sun!"
At that moment there was a great earthquake, and Emperor Severus and
Prefect Crispus were suspended in midair! Their terrified cries for mercy
aroused the Compassion of St Charalambos who asked God to release
them and to forgive them in their ignorance.
As soon as they recovered their composure, however, the Prefect, Crispus,
demanded that St Charalambos be beheaded and the Emperor
pronounced the death sentence.
On the way to his execution, St Charalambos remained calm and serene.
He chanted Hymns and offered his profound Prayers of Thanksgiving: "I
ever give Thanks to Thee, O Lord my God, for Thou art Merciful and
the Lover of mankind. Thou, O Almighty, hast cast down our enemy,
the evil one, and taken Hades captive, and put Death to death, thus
Delivering the race of man. Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom."
As the Great Hieromartyr prayed, faithful witnesses beheld the Heavens
opening and our Lord Jesus Christ appeared in all His Glory, with a
great multitude of His Holy Angels. It was a most spectacular Wonder!
Our Lord Jesus was beheld seated on a Throne of pearl, and they heard
Him say to St Charalambos: "Come, My Pleasing and Beloved One, who,
for My Name's sake, suffered such ill-treatment and hardships. Ask of
Me whatsoever Gift Thou dost wish, and I shall grant Thine Entreaty."
St Charalambos answered: "That Thou hast, by Thy Grace, Vouchsafed
me, the least person, to behold the Awesome Glory of Thy Presence, is,
in itself, a tremendous Gift.
But if it please Thy Goodness to command me to ask a Gift of Thee, I
beseech Thy Majesty and Dominion to grant this favour: to whomever
should find or possess a portion of my mortal relics, and in whatsoever
land they may celebrate the memory of my Martyrdom, may they
never suffer from hunger or plague or pestilence or untimely death or
destruction from evil men nor injury to crops.
I pray that they be in firm Peace, Salvation of soul, and health of body. I
Entreat that they enjoy plenty of wheat, oil, and wine, together with an
abundance of livestock and other good and useful possessions.
And to whomsoever should read the account of my Martyrdom, and
invoke my name, I supplicate for their Salvation and that they should
not suffer evil.
Since Thou knowest that men are but flesh and blood, and that they are
in Thine Immaculate Hands, I beseech Thee for the Forgiveness of
their sins. Do Thou Pardon the sins of such Faithful Ones, as Thou art
Good and the Lover of mankind.
Do Thou also, O Lord, keep the oxen of such in health, and all their
animals and livestock, that they may cultivate the Earth and
abundantly enjoy her fruits, to the Glory of Thy Name."
ST CHARALAMBOS,
THE
G R E A T H I E R O M A R T Y R - 1 0 F E B R U A R Y 5.
Our Lord said to him: Well done, My Faithful servant! Enter into the
Kingdom of Heaven! whereupon St Charalambos surrendered his soul
to the Lord thus denying the pagans their revenge.
St Galina, received St Charalambos body from the executioners, and with
all due reverence had it buried with great honour.
Emperor Severos, in awe and certainly in terror - of everything he had
witnessed, did not dare to punish his daughter, St Galina, seeing that
the Almighty God of the Christians was with her.
A large fragment from the cranium of St Charalambos was preserved in the
Holy Church of St George in old Iraklitsa, Greece.
In 1922, it was translated to new Iraklitsa.
An even larger fragment of his cranium is preserved in the Abbey of St
Stephano at Meteora.
It is worthy to note that within the sheath of the cranium, a 17th century
cross was discovered.
