PART 1:

Who an Engineer is, and the functions of an Engineer?

While the meanings change, the concept of engineering derives from the dawn of
human history as our ancestors developed and designed tools that were essential
for their survival. Indeed, human beings are dened by their tool-making,
designing and engineering skills, and the socialization and communication that
facilitated the invention, innovation and transfer of technology such as the axe,
hammer, lever, wedge, pulley, wheel and so on. Although based on trial and error,
this activity is similar to the modern idea of engineering where trial and error is
still an important part of innovation.
An engineer is someone, that applies the principles of science and
mathematics to develop economic solutions to technical problems. Their work
is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that
meet societal and consumer needs. Engineering is the eld or discipline,
practice, profession and art that relates to the development, acquisition and
application of technical, scientic and mathematical knowledge about the
understanding, design, development, invention, innovation and use of materials,
machines, structures, systems and processes for specic purposes.
Functions of the Engineer : The engineer;
Applies appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the
analysis and solution of engineering problems; provide technical,
commercial and managerial leadership

Undertake the management of high levels of risk associated with

engineering processes, systems, equipment, and infrastructure.
Performs activities that are essentially intellectual in nature, requiring
discretion and judgment.
Designs, develop, manufacture, commission, operate and maintain products,
equipment, processes and services
Actively participate in financial, statutory and commercial considerations
and in the creation of cost effective systems and procedures.

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING.

This branch of engineering deals with two major broad areas which include;
electronics engineering and telecommunication engineering thus its considered to
be very important course, more so now with its rapid growth in the United
Kingdom(U.k).
Electronics and Communications Engineering is a broad professional discipline
concerned with the analysis, design and management of signal generators,
electronic circuitry, voice, data and video systems, antennas, and electromagnetic

wave propagation. It is a branch of engineering that deals with the use of non-linear
and active electrical components such as electron tubes, and semiconductor
devices, especially transistors, diodes and integrated circuits to design electronic
circuits, devices and systems, typically also including passive electrical
components and based on printed circuit boards. The term denotes a broad
engineering field that covers important subfields such as analog electronics, digital
electronics, consumer electronics, embedded systems and power electronics. Also,
An electronic and communications engineer is responsible for the design of
electronics that drive the transmitter and receiver functions of any system
transporting wireless or wired communications. A person with this job may work in
the fields of computer networking, digital TV, satellite, radio or Internet
technology.
E.C.E has to do with the
non-linear and active
component such as electron
tube, semi-conductors and
vices, such as transistors,
diodes,which are utilized for the
design of electric circuit and
and systems on pointed circuit
boards.
E.C.E is highly
required in the sense that
almost all operating systems like,
the refrigerators, air conditioners, television set, radio, are all incorporated and
made possible due to electronics engineering.
BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION
ENGINEERING
Electronic engineering is a branch of electrical engineering; telecommunication
being a branch of the electronics. Thus it would be more appropriate for us to
consider the history of electronics and communication from these two views.
ELECTRONICS:

Electronic engineering as a profession sprang from technological improvements in

the telegraph industry during the late 19th century and in the radio and telephone
industries during the early 20th century. People gravitated to radio, attracted by the
technical fascination it inspired, first in receiving and then in transmitting. Many
who went into broadcasting in the 1920s had become "amateurs" in the period
before World War I. The modern discipline of electronic engineering was to a large
extent born out of telephone-, radio-, and television-equipment development and
the large amount of electronic-systems development during World War II of radar,
sonar, communication systems, and advanced munitions and weapon systems. In
the interwar years, the subject was known as radio engineering. The word
electronics began to be used in the 1940s. In the late 1950s the term electronic
engineering started to emerge.
The electronic laboratories (Bell Labs in the United States for instance) created and
subsidized by large corporations in the industries of radio, television, and
telephone equipment, began churning out a series of electronic advances. In 1948
came the transistor and in 1960 the integrated circuit, which would revolutionize
the electronic industry. In the UK, the subject of electronic engineering became
distinct from electrical engineering as a university-degree subject around 1960.
(Before this time, students of electronics and related subjects like radio and
telecommunications had to enroll in the electrical engineering department of the
university as no university had departments of electronics. Electrical engineering
was the nearest subject with which electronic engineering could be aligned,
although the similarities in subjects covered (except mathematics and
electromagnetism) lasted only for the first year of three-year courses.).
Electronic engineering (even before it acquired the name) facilitated the
development of many technologies including wireless telegraphy, radio, television,
radar, computers and microprocessors.
Telecommunication Engineering, history has it that ; Early telecommunication
technologies included visual signals, such as beacons, smoke signals, semaphore
telegraphs, signal flags, and optical heliographs. Other examples of pre-modern
telecommunications include audio messages such as coded drumbeats, lung-blown
horns, and loud whistles. Electrical and electromagnetic telecommunication
technologies include telegraph, telephone, and teleprinter, networks, radio,
microwave transmission, fiber optics, communications satellites and the Internet.

Thus, generally electronics and communication engineering is a very versatile

branch of engineering as it incorporates all forms of engineering.
For example, imagine a world without electricity, without electronics devices such
as television, satellites, radio receivers, air-conditioner , traffic control system and
other related devices?...you will discover that things are really going to be difficult.

PART 2:
SOCIETAL EFFECTS OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION
ENGINEERING

The roles, responsibilities, and duties of an electronics and

communication engineer in the society
Design:
- Electronics and communication engineers start by reviewing the design
concept. They analyze system requirements and costs involved with the
new design, which can include electronic components, equipment,
systems or software. After the design is complete, they build and test the
electronics and make design changes as required until the design is
complete. Along with designing new electronics and their related
software, electronics engineers evaluate electronics systems and
products, then recommend modifications or repairs.
- Also the electronics and communication engineer is responsible for the
designing and installation of E.C.E equipments, and the installation of
complex operating switching system and fibre optics.

Testing and inspection:

- Electronics engineers start by reviewing the design concept. They
analyze system requirements and costs involved with the new design,
which can include electronic components, equipment, systems or
software. After the design is complete, they build and test the electronics
and make design changes as required until the design is complete. Along
with designing new electronics and their related software, electronics
engineers evaluate electronics systems and products, then recommend
modifications or repairs.
General importance of electronic and communication engineering:
- Most of the controls, automation and instrumentation are not possible
without the knowledge of E.C.E.
- Write computer or microprocessor software programs.
- Survey satellite receival sites for proper signal level and provide
technical assistance in dish location and installation, transporting dishes
as necessary.
- Test electronics units, using standard test equipment, and analyze results
to evaluate performance and determine need for adjustment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and calibration of equipment and
systems. Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, and
engineering instructions for assembling electronics units, applying
knowledge of electronic theory and components.

- Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, working with

manufacturers and field representatives as necessary to procure
replacement parts.
- Maintain system logs and manuals to document testing and operation of
equipment.
Historical Development and New Discoveries In The Field And
Financial Breakthrough In The Field:
In this context we will discussing, about the societal breakthroughs in the
different components of the electronics and communication engineering,
starting from electronics in general:
Electronics: From vacuum tubes to transistors to microprocessors,
electronic devices became smaller, more powerful, and more efficient
throughout the 20th century, and provided the technological basis for
countless innovations and products. The vacuum tube led to the early
designs of the radio, television, and computer. In the early 1950s the
transistor had captured the worlds imagination, first in the transistorized
radiothe fastest selling retail object of all time. In 1955, an early highspeed commercial computer weighed three tons, consumed 50 kilowatts of
power, and cost $200,000. But it could perform 50 multiplications per
second, a feat unmatchable by either a human or the latest adding machine.
In 1977, a handheld calculator weighed under a pound, consumed less than
half a watt of power, could perform 250 multiplications per second, and cost
$300.
Today, you can buy palm-sized organizers for $250 that link to computers,
transmit data, and store thousands of addresses, appointments, memos, lists,
and e-mails. The key to this stunning revolution in personal power is the
integrated circuitthe heart of the modern electronics systems that have
swept the world in the last half of the 20th century. Brilliant engineering and
innovation lie behind these unseen elements that operate wireless
communications, satellite broadcasts, air traffic control systems, microwave
ovens, video cameras, touch-tone phones, computers, and many other
innovations that have improved the quality, safety, and convenience of
modern life.

Radio and Television: The introduction of radio and television were major
agents of social change in the 20th century, opening windows to other lives,
to remote areas of the world, and to history in the making. Broadcasts of
news, sports events, and live performances captivated audiences as they
emanated from speakers or screens in living rooms. After Marconis 1901
demonstration of the wireless telegraph and the practical use of signal
transmission, technical developments were rapid.
Computer Sector: The rapid progress of computers came about because of
innovations in stored data, the competitive race for superior materials that
would make computers faster and more reliable, and engineers who saw that
the computer was more than a calculator. Graphically driven software makes
computers easy to use and has begun to open new worlds through the
Internet. The average American now has access to unprecedented amounts of
knowledge, and can communicate freely in a world forum.
In this respect, the real computer revolution is not one of numbers and bytes,
but one in which people, regardless of geography and politics, can share
information and learn from each other.

Problems Encountered and Solutions(Considering Africa):

Irrespective of the economic improvements and technological
developments, yet there are still problems of Unemployment, utility
issues, children are still dying of mal-nutrition and lack of professional
moral ethics. The problems encountered include:
TRANSPORTATION: Transportation is vital to the future development
of our society. Our reliance on all forms of transportation is growing
despite the rising costs of energy. The transportation sector is crying out
for novel technological solutions that would allow it to become more
efficient, safe and affordable. Electrical and electronic engineering is
playing a major role with recent examples including electrical vehicles
and more electric aircraft.
INFORMATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES:
ICT has led a technical revolution over the last decade. The modern
world is now defined by smart ICT solutions. The smart revolution
changes not only how digital data is delivered, stored and retrieved, but
also how basic utilities (energy, water) and transportation is organized.
Areas of focus currently include: data centers and cloud computing, super
fast broadband, and wireless networks.
ENERGY: Securing sustainable energy sources is one of the most
difficult and important challenges facing our society. The dangers of
climate change are widely acknowledged and drastic emission cuts add to
the challenge. Hot topics in this sector include: future networks (smart
grids, smart storage and energy metering), electric vehicles (charging,
interaction with smart grids) and safety in nuclear systems.
CONCLUSION:
With the rate of improvements and developments in the various fields
especially in E.C.E as discussed above, we can see there is need for
engineers who know what they are doing. Engineers ,whose sole aim is
for the development of the society. The electronics and communication
engineering sector has helped in promoting the mobility of the

engineering industry by sending messages informations via satellites,

radio transmitters /signals etc. that are essential for Global revolution.
Advances in this sector have led to rapid increase in other sectors of
engineering, so that is to say all sectors are important.
Well, dont be like the nerd on the picture, sitting and waiting
for people to always help him out.

Always complaining and doing nothing, but be the engineer with a

difference, always seeking for solution to problems and making a
difference, thus ensuring public safety.
