1. U200 Arabic Language 1 (Native Arabic Speakers)


1. 1. Module Description:
The course aims to teach a variety of topics based on Arabic language and literature
within a medical context. The topics of the course are all highly-related to medicine
and assist both medical/ nursing students in a way that raise students awareness of
the importance of the Medical Arabic language and literature in their academic
study, daily life and future career. The course has been developed in response to
HEC instructions, see appendix 1.

1.2. Learning Outcomes:


On completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:

Connect and compare some past medical concepts and situations to the current
medical situations through Arabic literature study.
Investigate & criticize the life of some famous medical physicians & nurses, and
identify lessons to learn from their studies and achievements.
Identify causes and effects of some medical crisis and problems, and recommend
some appropriate realistic solutions through Arabic literature study.
Translate some given tasks from both Arabic English and English- Arabic.
Produce both correct written and oral communicative-medical Arabic language,
and apply it to real life situations.
Assess & peer correct written and oral work using correct Arabic language.
Conduct research for some current medical issues and present their work using
correct Arabic language.

1.3. Course Sub-Objectives


By the end of this course students will be able to:

Understand fully the concept of medicine and the way the medical education
was performed during the era of our old Arabic Islamic Physicians, and link this
to the current situation of the medical education.

Have an overall idea about the most famous Arab Islamic physicians, their
achievements and what do they learn from their experience, studies and
achievements.
Analyse the reasons behind the rise & the decline of science & scientific research
in the Arab Islamic World, and develop effective recommendations to bring back
the golden days of Arabic medicine to its best (as a new generation of Arab
medical/nursing students).
Identify and analyse the causes and effects of the crisis of the Arabic scientific
thinking, and focus on the importance of the scientific research and its correct
procedures.
Apply the use of scientific research skills in Arabic language to research and
analyse some of the latest local and international medical topics and issues as a
group work assignment and present their work in front of the students in the
lecture to get benefit and open the door for students discussion.
Apply skills of critical thinking for a better critical reading in Arabic language;
especially in the medical/ nursing field.
Understand and comprehend the concept of voluntary work, its importance, and
the ways of making use of this field for both nursing and medical students in
their academic and practical life.
Practice the use of some common medical Arabic terminology in both classic
Arabic and local dialect and their meanings in English, and apply the use of these
terms in communication and in translating and writing some medical documents
and reports; using correct language.
Assess written and oral work and correct their colleagues common mistakes.
Research, write and present their final project.

1.4. Methods of Instruction:


Students are required to read and prepare the text before each lecture and come ready
to participate and interact. Follow up activities will be completed by the students on the
VLE. This course encourages students to read and think critically in Arabic.

a. Summative assessment:
Students are required to write a group project. Students will be assessed according to
the following criteria:
The written presentation project will comprise:
60%
The presentation will comprise:
20%
Total:

Students will be given a medical Arabic case study, with a number of questions; they will
be asked to answer these questions, to analyse the case and the major problem and find
some recommended solutions. The format of the project will be provided to them with
the learning objectives & the marks distribution sheet (Notice: All will be done in Arabic,
and students will be asked to do some research and write the references used in a
correct way), and this is the written part of the final project.
The second part of this project will be oral, and it must be presented in front of students
and a number of academic examiners. Students will be assessed according to their work
and performance following a certain criteria.
1.6. Course Evaluation
On completion of the course students will complete an evaluation sheet. Students who
are sponsored by Tamkeen will be sent another sheet for the course evaluation
provided by Tamkeen to fill in, and the evaluation analysis will be kept for both
Tamkeen and RCSI own records.

2. U300 Arabic Language 2 (Non-Native Arabic Speakers)


2. 1. Module Description:
This programme for learners of the Arabic language is divided into two levels (Levels
A and B) to facilitate the learning of students with different levels of knowledge in
Arabic. Students will be tested prior to commencement to ascertain their current
level of Arabic. The language topics of the course are related to medicine. This
course is to be followed by a low level Arabic language speakers & non- Arabic
speakers. The course has been developed in response to HEC instructions, see
appendix 1.
2.2. Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:

acquire the Arabic language phonology and script.


learn an essential bank of terminology (especially some basic medical terminology);
deal with word formation from the roots and form meaningful sentences.
understand the meaning of some commonly used phrases.
practise all the basic language skills (e.g. reading, listening, speaking & writing).
practise language terms such as spelling and basic grammar.
become more skillful in using the communicative-medical Arabic in real life situation
& refer it to their field of study.

2.3. Course Teaching Techniques


The course follows a communicative language teaching model and requires students to
work in individual, pair and group work. Therefore, students are taught in classes with a
maximum size of 20 students.

Emphasizing what comes in the Decision of the Higher Education Council No. (63) on
the 29th November, 2007, which includes the following:
a. Ask Private higher education institutions to teach an Arabic Language Course (a
University Requirement) that has three credits, and that is by the beginning of the
second academic semester 2007/2008 as an experiment. However, it will be
compulsorily applied to all educational institutions starting from the first academic
semester 2008/2009.
b. Identify alternative courses in the field of the Arabic language to Arabic Language
learners that carries three credits.
c. High education institutions have the freedom to choose the type of curriculum that
suits its circumstances.
