OTTAWAMorethantwothirdsofCanadianswantmarijuanalawssoftened,saysanopinionpollconductedforthefederal
government.
Andwhileasmallmajoritybelievescompaniesshouldnotbepermittedtosellmarijuanajustastheysellalcoholandcigarettes,its
clearmanypeoplehavenoproblemwiththeproposition.
Amongthepollshighlights:
37.3%saymarijuanashouldbelegalized
33.4%wantpossessionofsmallamountsofmarijuanadecriminalized,leadingtoafineratherthanacriminalrecord
13.7%saythemarijuanalawsshouldstaythesame
12%wantpenaltiesincreased.
Theresultsofthenationalsurveyof3,000people,commissionedbytheDepartmentofJustice,willaddfueltothedebatethatis
heatingupbeforethe2015election.

However,82.9%ofrespondentsbelievedoctorsshouldbeallowedtoprescribemarijuana
topatientssomethingthatisnowallowed.
Thepollsteralsoorganized14focusgroupsof10peopleeachtodiscusstheissuein
depth.
Mostfocusgroupparticipantssupportedleavingthelawaloneorfiningpeoplewith
smallamountsofmarijuanasotheywouldnothaveacriminalrecord.
TherewassomesupportforlegalizationinfocusgroupsheldinBritishColumbia,but
elsewheretherewasverylittlesupport.
DeputyLiberalLeaderRalphGoodalesaidWednesdaythepollshowsCanadiansdontbelievethecurrentmarijuanalawsaccomplish
theirpublicpolicyobjectives.
Thestatusquoisobviouslyfailedpolicy,hesaid.
ThatsclearlyrecognizedbythevastmajorityofCanadians.Theycometosomedifferentconclusionsaboutwhatexactlytodoabout
it,butclearlytheywantchange.

crimesdeclinedduringthefirstthreemonthsoftheyear,comparedwiththesameperiodfor2013.
Homicideswentdownfrom17to8(a53%drop),automobilebreakinsfrom2,317to1,477(down36%)andsexualassaults
from110to95(down14%).Overall,violentandpropertycrimesdroppedmorethan10%fromlastyeartothisyearduringthe
firstquarter.
