In the heart of Amsterdam you will find a number of impressive Jewish monuments
within less than one square kilometre. In the old Jewish quarter you will find t
he Jewish Historical Museum, with its fascinating Children's Museum, the imposin
g Portuguese Synagogue, and the Hollandsche Schouwburg (National Holocaust Memor
ial), a moving historic monument. Visit these beautiful locations in Amsterdam d

Jewish Historical Museum
The Jewish Historical Museum is a modern museum of Jewish heritage housed in fou
r monumental synagogues near Waterlooplein. Three permanent exhibitions present
the history and culture of the Jewish people in the Netherlands. In addition to
the three permanent exhibitions, the museum always offers two great temporary ex
hibitions and a busy events calendar.

Portuguese Synagogue
Directly opposite the Jewish Historical Museum in the colossol concealed rectang
ular form of the magnificent Portuguese Synagogue, erected in 1675. The synagogu
e remains a somewhat mysterious building for many visitors. Once inside, they ar
e rewarded with the stunning beauty of a synagogue that is still in use, with a
fully intact seventeenth-century interior.

Hollandsche Schouwburg (National Holocaust Memorial)
During the Second World War, Jews were rounded up into the Hollandsche Schouwbur
g (now the National Holocaust Memorial) before being deported to concentration c
amps. Thousands of people were held there, awaiting an unknown fate. In honor of
their memory, a monument and memorial room have now been installed in the theat
re.

JHM Children's Museum
In the JHM Children's Museum the Jewish Hollander family will warmly welcome you
into their home. The Hollanders will tell you about the Jewish tradition and yo
u'll find fun things to do there: braiding bread in the kitchen, learning Hebrew
in the study, or making music together in the music room. A friend of the famil
y, Max the Matzo, shows the way and turns every visit into a party!
