Sisters fundraiser warms hearts and stomachs

With Valentines Day coming
up, one cant help but get in the
mood to spread some love.
Whether it is with a significant
other, family, friends or even
strangers, it is all about small
acts of true love.
In Moorestown, Maya DeSumma, 6, and her sister Ava, 5,
though small themselves, decided
to do a big act of true love.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day,
Maya and Ava held a hot cocoa
and warm strawberry milk stand
outside their house to raise
money for their local food bank as
well as collect new Disneys
Frozen toys to donate to the
Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. They will be delivering the
toys as well as some Frozen
movies on Valentines Day as a
small act of true love.
Olaf, the funny and loving
snowman from the movie, inspired their little slogan, small
acts of true love.
It is because of Olaf he is
funny and makes you laugh. Its
like getting hugs and kisses,
Maya said.
Olaf sees the best in everyone, Ava said.

pneumonia, she and Ava noticed

King Jr. Day and wanting to emulate what her teacher from Baker
School told her, which was to do
something nice for someone on
that day, Maya decided the day
would be perfect to do a hot cocoa
and warm strawberry milk stand
to collect money for their local
food bank and Frozen toys for
CHOP, with some help from her
sister.
I wanted to host the stand and
collect donations so I wont be sad
or other kids wont be sad when
they are in the hospital, Maya
said.
Speaking to the child life director at CHOP, their idea was approved and blossomed into a
whole fundraiser.
The girls made Frozen
marshmallow treats, painted and
decorated the Frozen donation
box, made signs, picked out the
picture for the flyer and made hot
cocoa and warm strawberry
milk, Avas favorite drink. They
also played the Frozen movie
soundtrack to set the mood.
Friends and family came from all
around to enjoy the treats and
help Maya and Ava fulfill their
goal.
I loved and liked that so many
of my friends came and Ms. Andy
came, Maya said. Ms. Andy

the display case on the right hand
side. If you walk over to see it,
you might notice tiny versions of

houses, trains and other structures all built and handcrafted by

Moorestowns own William Rose.
Roses homemade models will
be on display at the library until
the end of February. The display
features imagined structures,
working trains and familiar
buildings from around the area,
all created with amazing detail
and precision.

Although
Rose had always been a
ROSE
fan of trains
since he was a child, it wasnt
until 1948 that he started to get
into the building of trains. He
was inspired by Model Railroader Magazine, a magazine still in
print today, that he had found at
his junior high school.
I remember when I was in junior high school, I picked up a
train magazine, scanned through
it and thought it was pretty neat.
In 1948, that was the beginning,
Rose said.
After getting the magazine for
a bit, he learned to build trains,
went to the hobby store in Center
City Philadelphia and got his first
engine for a whopping $14. He
took it home and hooked it up to a
train he had built and he got
hooked on the hobby.
From that hobby grew a 24-by10-foot layout that features working trains, homes, buildings,
structures, plants, people and
more. Each year around November for National Model Railroad
Association Month, Rose opens
his house for people to look at his
work. This year, Roses work
might be a featured stop for the
national convention in South Jersey this October where members
of the NMRA go around to featured builders in the area to look
at their displays.
Rose now constructs models
for people who might desire a
model of their home or a model
they wish to place on their own
layout. Since he has started, Rose
has built around 500 models, with
60 to 70 of them being in his possession.
They say, Wow! Its amazing,
all of the detail, Rose said.

The Letter Writers Alliance
group is an organization that
could help you do just that.
Matthew Manella, of the Cherry Hill LWA group, has recently
started a group in Moorestown.
The LWA group of Moorestown
will meet at the Moorestown Library from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Feb.
18. Although it is a little after
Valentines Day, that doesnt
mean you cant still send a letter.
The LWA is a non-profit organization started in Chicago by two
business owners, Kathy Zadrozny
and Donovan Beeson, who want-

provides safe, healthy
haven for local youth

The Department of Parks &
Recreation is host to a variety of
activities, not the least of which
is the after-school partnership
program with Live Civilly and
the Moorestown Ministerium:
the Open Gym/Homework Help
Program. This partnership, now
in its third year, provides a safe
and
healthy
haven
for
Moorestown youth, grades four
though 12, every day after school.
At this time, a bus provides service from William Allen Middle
School daily.
This daily after-school open
program allows local youth to
stay active and also receive academic assistance from licensed
teachers and youth volunteers.
Live Civilly and the Ministerium
provide healthy snacks for the
youth attending the after-school

programs. Snacks include fresh

fruit, whole grain granola bars
and protein bars as well as other
quick snacks. Overseen by
qualified adults, the Open Gym
program allows young people to
burn off some of their daily
stress while also getting nutritional sustenance.

Its that time of year again when tough decisions have to be made

f you sit on a school board or municipal governing body, youre entering the part of the year that
probably causes you the most
headaches. Its budget time. Its time to
do the impossible: provide outstanding
service for little or no money.
A few years ago, Gov. Christie made
headlines and more than a few enemies when he slashed state funding
and eventually added a 2 percent cap
on tax hikes.
Since then, at least some of the
money has returned. Sometime this
month, the governor will release state
funding figures for this year.
But its safe to say that no district or
town will find itself rolling in dough.
Governing bodies will continue to face
decisions that involve reducing or
holding the line on services and/or
raising taxes. And we all love more

have been cut too deeply? Now is the time
to make your voice heard. Its budget season, and most local governing bodies have
ways to involve the public in the decisionmaking process.

We already pay the highest property
taxes in the nation $8,161 on average,
according to recently-released data
from the Department of Community
Affairs so why not pay more?
One bright spot some would say
the only bright spot to come of this is
that many governing bodies these days
have made the budget process open to
the public.
Transparent is the watchword
today.
Its a smart move to involve the pub-

lic everyone from those who want to

cut taxes to the bone to those who
would like to see expanded services.
When the public is invited in, they
not only see the difficult choices leaders have to make, but they also feel like
they have a voice. Leaders are listening
to them. Their input is valued. While
not everyone will be happy with every
decision, at least there is a sense of inclusion and ownership of the
process.
We encourage everyone to get involved with their local budget processes this year. In most instances, there
will be hearings. Items will be posted
online.
Its easy to offer your suggestions to
the people who eventually will make
the final decision.
And, chances are, your feedback will
be appreciated.

Library hosts The Artists Garden lecture Feb. 17

Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. for a lecture from
the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine
Arts Museum Education department on
its upcoming exhibition: The Artists Garden: American Impressionism and the
Garden Movement 1887 1920.
Focused on the period 1887-1920, The
Artist's Garden exhibition and catalogue
will tell the story of American Impressionist artists and the growing popularity of
gardening as a middle-class leisure pursuit
at the turn of the 20th-century, bringing together paintings, sculpture, books and
stained glass.

around themes of American artists/European gardens; the Lady in the Garden,

special emphasis on the importance of the
Philadelphia area, which served as the
originator of the Colonial Revival Garden
movement with the Centennial Exhibition
in 1876. Moreover, the Philadelphia area
was the center of the publishing industry
in the early 20th century, which led to the
creation of magazines aimed at middle
class suburban gardeners such as House
and Garden (founded in 1901 in Philadelphia). Philadelphia was also the city that
founded the Garden Club of America in
1913.

Local couple looks back

on 80 years of marriage
William and Williemae Fullwood
fill years with love and family

According to tradition, a 25th
wedding anniversary is celebrated with gifts of silver. For a 50th
anniversary, its gifts of gold. And
for those fortunate enough to
make it to 75 years, diamonds are
exchanged.
But what is the gift for an impressive 80-year marriage?
William and Williemae Fullwood may know. The Mt. Laurel
residents celebrated their 80th
wedding anniversary last July,
and are now working toward anniversary No. 81.
According to William, theres
no big secret in achieving such a
marriage milestone.
Love, he said with a smile.
Thats all I can tell you.
The Fullwoods spent their married years in Burlington before
moving to Mt. Laurel Center for
Rehabilitation and Healthcare,
where they recently celebrated
their birthdays. William turned
98 on Feb. 7. Williemae marked
101 years on Feb. 9.
Their story begins in 1934,
when William a farmer met

Williemae at an entertainment
event at her school, where she
was a teacher. It was just instinct
and nature that drew William to
Williemae, however, three years
her junior, Williams charm
didnt work on Williemae right
away.
She kept telling me I was too
young, but I kept coming back,
William said. One day, she called
me and said she was ready.
That was the beginning of
their 80-year journey. The couple
settled in Burlington, raising 13
children. Their family has since
expanded to include 42 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and quite a few great-greatgrandchildren, too. They were
longtime members of Second
Baptist Church of Moorestown.
William said while they had
lots of mild fights, they never had
a big fight. They were well
matched and lived a wonderful
life.
We had a big family, William
said, and weve done well.

look back on their many years of marriage

With boxes of heart-shaped
candies lining store shelves,
shimmering red and pink
wreaths adorning front doors and
vibrant rose bouquets filling
flower shops, theres no question
what day is just around the corner.
Its almost Valentines Day.
While it has evolved into a day
of gift-giving and expensive dinner dates, the historic holiday has
romantic roots. What better way
to celebrate than with stories of
long-lasting love from local couples?

The last seat on the bus

Carmela Millie Kibler was
working in New York City when
she received a telegram urging
her to return home to Boston as
quickly as possible.
My mom was sick. I didnt
have time to catch the plane or
train. The last bus left five after 12
midnight, she said.
Millie just made it on the bus.
The minute I put my foot on
the steps, the motor came on,
she said. The lights went out and
I couldnt find a seat.
As she made her way through
the bus, she finally found one lone
seat and asked the man if it was
taken. He said no.
That man turned out to be Millies future husband, Alfred Kibler.
He talked my ear off, Millie
smiled. That weekend he called
me at home.
The Kiblers started to date in
May, and they knew they wanted
to marry by August. They tied the
knot on Aug. 13, 1950.
They lived in Cinnaminson for
37 years, moving to Delanco for 10
years before their most recent
move to Brandywine Senior Living at Moorestown Estates. The
Kiblers had two sons and one
daughter; they now have four
granddaughters, too.

adding with a laugh, and the fact
that we were able to tolerate each
other all those years.
The couple has fond memories
of weekend getaways to the Taj
Mahal in Atlantic City and family
vacations to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Tolerance is key in a long,
happy marriage, Millie said.
The Kiblers are proud of their
64 years together.
She takes care of me and I try
to take care of her, Alfred said.

Were so used to each other,

Millie added. We wouldnt know
what to do without each other.

Love through letters

While at her high school locker,
Caroline Liberi would often chat
with the girl using the locker next
door. After a while, this girl asked
if Caroline would like to write letters to her brother, who was serving overseas with the Army.

back on the detail. In his own layout, he created even the smallest
details such as mailboxes, manhole covers and people.
I dont hold back when it
comes to detailing something,
Rose said.
Almost everything Rose makes
is handmade. He uses supplies
such as wood, paper, cardstock,
metal castings and real lights,
just to name a few.
Back when I started, things
were very crude. You had to make
everything yourself, and now I
still like to build, he said.
Rose has a lot of favorite parts
to model building. He enjoys getting started and being so inspired
that there are times he cant wait
to get up and continue working.
He also likes putting a lot of the
detail on his models, such as
weathering pieces or putting in

The worst part is when it is
done and there is nothing else
you can do with it, Rose said.
Although Rose doesnt find
anything hard about model train
building, he does admit it is hard
for beginners because everything
is so expensive. What used to be a
$14 engine can now go for $400 to
$500.

The hobby has changed a lot.

They arent catering to the
builders. They want to sell train
sets, Rose said.
Rose does worry about the legacy of his models as well as others.
He hopes people still continue to
care about them and get into the
hobby, not letting the pieces go to
waste.
Each month or so, the library
will display work by different
local artists.

Robotics teams advance to states

Three Moorestown teams will compete at championship Feb. 14
On Jan. 10, three of five
Moorestown robotics teams won
spots to advance to the State
Championship to be held on Feb.
14 at Delaware State University.

written so quickly. It lacks a certain amount of care. I missed
sending and receiving letters. I
have children of my own, and I

was sad to learn that they might

not learn cursive. It made me
think of losing the art of writing
letters, Manella said.
His second reason for starting
these LWA groups was to help
others. Manella, being a financial
planner, noticed that many people
do so much for their family, providing for and protecting them,
but no one is aware of it. He wanted people to realize they should
communicate these accomplishments and feelings of why they
did what they did, in a personal
letter or ethical will, otherwise it
will be all for naught.
Manella hopes the LWA groups
help people find time to sit down
and write letters. Just like the
gym, it is something you just

need to get started and get into

the habit of setting aside time.
And for an hour and a half, once a
month, it doesnt seem like too
much of a time commitment.
Unless you carve out the time
to do these things, it is not going
to happen. What better place than
a quiet library to write a letter?
Manella said.
According to Manella, it isnt
hard to write a letter. All you need
is to figure out your audience, decide what you would like to communicate, write the letter and repeat.
It is that simple. Its one of the
simplest clubs you can think of,

For nearly two years, Caroline
wrote to Frank Liberi, meeting
him when he was finally home on
furlough. They went on a doubledate with Franks sister and her
boyfriend, and the rest, as they
say, is history.
We have a very good marriage, Caroline said.
Now living at Brandywine Senior Living at Moorestown Estates,
the couple raised their three children in Delran. Their family has
expanded to include five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to raising their
family, a highlight of their marriage was traveling the country
and world. Trips brought them to
Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska
and more.

I had a great mom. She stayed

with the kids while we traveled,
Caroline said.
She was a good cook, too!
Frank added with a laugh.
The key to a long marriage?
Just be nice to each other, Frank
said.
And respect one another, Caroline said.
We always loved each other,
Frank added.
Caroline said you dont realize
how many years go by because
they go by so quickly.
It just keeps going, she said,
and were lucky.
Frank is proud of their 67
years together.
Thats a long time, isnt it? he
asked. Weve just loved each
other very much. Ive got a wonderful life.

$425 plus a box full of new
Frozen toys to donate. Of the
$425, $300 is going to the food
bank while $125 will be used toward

the hospital, and it was nice to see
she was thinking about others,
too, DeSumma said.
Although the girls collected
toys they themselves didnt have,
DeSumma said Maya and Ava
didnt hesitate to throw the toys
in the donation box; they were
even excited to, and she was really happy to see that.

DeSumma also said it was nice

to see her girls working together
for a good cause. Sisters Maya
and Ava, like Elsa and Anna from
Frozen, had to come together to
accomplish their goal.
I was really proud at how hard
they worked and rallied together
as a team to make the hot cocoa
stand a success, DeSumma said.
Although there are no plans for
the future as of yet, this may not
be the last time you see the
DeSumma sisters. There is some
talk about having a Frozen
lemonade stand, though it is not
confirmed.
I want to raise $100 million to
help the kids in the hospital and
give them money. Im going to sell
Frozen cakes, hot cocoa with
blue whip cream, my favorite, and
Frozen blue lemonade with whip
cream and umbrellas in it. Olaf
loves umbrella drinks, Maya
said.
We hope to continue in some
way, so be on the look out in the
future, DeSumma said.

the third Wednesday of every
month while Cherry Hills meets
the fourth Tuesday of every
month. At the meetings, Manella
will offer suggestions to spur attendees' creative juices to write
letters. Also, he will provide resources to help newcomers get
started with letter writing.
All attendees are asked just to
bring their favorite writing utensil, paper, an envelope and a
stamp as well as an open heart.
Sending a handwritten, meaningful letter to someone you care
about makes him or her realize
how much he or she means to
you, and it may arrive just in
time.
Letters wont write themselves. Come out and spend an
hour and a half writing the letters you know you should be writing, Manella said.
Some supplies will be provid-

ed, but participants are urged to

bring their favorite letter writing
materials.
