A Potter Pole Bender

The fishin was s-l-o-w, but patience paid off for some of
the young anglers participating in the Kids Ice Fishing
Day at Home Run Pond. Braxton Potter hooked into
a feisty rainbow trout at 10:07 Saturday morning and
was able to pull it up without any help. In fact, nobody

knew he had landed a fish until it was already out of the

hole when finally says, I got one! It was a catch and
release effort as Braxton was happy to put the rainbow
back into the hole to perhaps be hooked again some
day by another happy little angler.

Now for the rest (?) of the story

Wrestling is a cruel sport, but if there is one kid that
didnt deserve this, its Matt Reyling, an upset Scotty Head
Coach Jory Casterline explained of the disqualification of his
103-pounder from the State Tournament next weekend in
Billings.

It was the championship match and Matts opponent
Huntleys Parker Snyder had him in a cross arm, right over
Matts mouth. Had Matt lifted his head up and away, he would
have been caught in a cradle, so Matt kept driving forward.
Next thing, Snyder jumps up and accuses Matt of biting.

Yeah, there were teeth marks, Coach Casterline said,
but not consistent with an intentional bite.

He went on to explain that it would be about the same
difference as punching someone in the mouth and the guys fist
ends up with teeth marks. Would that be an intentional bite by
the dude receiving the punch in the mouth? Not hardly.

Coach Casterline pled their case to the referee but to
no avail. He also questioned the officials as to whether this
would disqualify Matt from State, and initially the referee
said that, no, he was still a qualifier for State.

Then for the real punch in the mouth:

Matt took his place on the podium and they put his
2nd-place medal around his neck. Moments later, the
officials stripped him of his medal, told him he was DQd
from State and kicked him out of the gymnasium! He spent
the remainder of the afternoon sitting out in the lobby with
Assistant Coach Leo Pattison at his side.
This 14-year-old has put so much effort into this
season, praised Coach Casterline. He was lifting wieghts
every morning at 6:00 just so we could get him up to a
hundred pounds. Its a shame.

He spent yesterday talking to officials on the phone in
protest to no avail. They still said it was flagrant, a deeply
disturbed Coach Casterline said. I know it wasnt.

Senator Brenden reporting

Hello again from the Capitol in Helena.
Last week we passed out of the Senate, SB 188 by
Sen. Chas Vincent (Libby) a bill that would limit the
insurance liability on property caused by range and forest
fires. Examples were given how some awards have been
outlandish compared to what the worth of the property
was. The electrical co-ops have in the past been very
impacted by these high monetary awards as well as other
property owners. This bill now goes to the House.

My SB 89 passed the Senate without any opposition.
This bill simply says that Supreme Court Judges and
District Court Judges have to report their financial and
campaign expenses and donations just as we legislators do.
What is good for the goose should be good for the gander!
Sen. Keane (D, Butte) and I have been working
for the past two sessions to get the underground tank
problem solved. There are 4,000 of these tanks scattered
around the state that need to be cleaned up because of
contamination due to spills and/or leaking. Last session
I got a $400,000.00 grant to clean up two sites with strict
guidelines. One of these sites was in Fort Peck and had
dragged on for over 10 years. Guess what, not only were
these two sites cleaned up, but another dozen as well.
There is over $10 million in this account for just this
cleanup. This fund is called the Orphan Share. SB 96
allows for this cleanup of sites from all around the state
and gives time lines, limits administrative fees and has to
come back and give progress reports to the Environmental
Quality Council (EQC) of which I am the Chairmen.

Finally, my FWP committee killed the bill that would
stop the transporting of fish around eastern Montana. This
bill was a bill against fish derbies that raises money for local
projects and is a great deal of fun for these communities.
As you may note this bill was brought forward from a
legislator from western (Bozeman) Montana!
My Senate Page this week is Daniel Sawdey from
Scobey. His father is Dr. Donald Sawdey and my neighbor.
Daniel is a junior at Scobey High School.

All for now and I hope everyone has a good week.
~ Sen. John C. Brenden
