The following recommendations must be followed when you operate an engine with an Oil
Renewal System (ORS):
Caterpillar Multigrade Diesel Engine Oil (DEO) is recommended. Refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations".
Check the engine oil level daily and keep a log of all the additions of engine oil.
Every 500 hours obtain an SOS Oil Analysis.
Every 500 hours change the engine oil filters, the secondary fuel filters, and the filter for the
ORS. Change the filters sooner if the monitoring system indicates that the filters need to be
changed.
Utilize the results of the SOS Oil Analysis in order to determine when the engine oil needs
to be changed.
NOTICE
When using the ORS on an engine, it is the customer's responsibility to
ensure that the above maintenance items are managed during the life
of the engine. Failure to do so may result in shortened engine life or a
catastrophic engine failure.
Engine Oil
Be sure to use an engine oil that has been approved for your engine. The use of an engine oil that
is below the Caterpillar recommendations will cause the engine life to be shortened. Refer to the

Operation and Maintenance Manual for information that is related to the correct engine oil for
your engine.
Record Keeping
Keep a daily maintenance log of all of the additions of engine oil to the engine. This is necessary
in order to ensure that the ORS is operating properly. The daily maintenance log is also necessary
for the correct adjustment to the amount of oil that is metered into the fuel system. Illustration 1
shows an example of the additions of oil during a 500 hour period. The daily maintenance log will
also be the source of the total amount of oil that has been added since the last oil change. This
information is needed at the time of each oil analysis.

Note: Check that this type of trend is occurring for your engine. If the analysis does not exhibit a
trend that is similar to the above plot, check for the following conditions: proper operation of the
ORS, rate for metering of the oil and proper operation of the engine. Refer to Systems Operation,
"Troubleshooting" for information that is related to evaluating this condition.
