DOCTORAL RESEARCH
Current-fed Converter Topologies for Interconnecting Solar Photovoltaic, AC and DC Grids
Guided by Prof. B. G. Fernandes

PV Module-integrated DC-DC Microconverter

A current-fed DC-DC converter topology is proposed to integrate low voltage photovoltaic (PV)
modules with high voltage DC microgrid.
Effect of converter switching ripple at low insolation level is analyzed.
A closed-loop controller is designed using a small-signal model of the converter.
Performance of the proposed converter topology is experimentally tested using Agilent 4360A

solar array emulator and Siemens SL-60 PV modules.

Bidirectional Current-fed Converter
A bidirectional, three-phase, current-fed converter topology is proposed to integrate DC grid with
utility AC grid.
Unbalance in three-phase grid voltages gives rise to a second harmonic ripple in the DC-link current.
At the same time, the AC side current has fundamental frequency negative sequence and third
harmonic positive sequence components.
A control strategy is proposed to eliminate the negative sequence component from output current, and
inject balanced three-phase currents into the AC grid.
Stability of the proposed closed-loop controller is studied using small-signal model of the converter.
The proposed control strategy is experimentally validated using TMS320F28335 DSP.
System of Current-fed Converters to Integrate Large PV Plant with AC Grid
The system comprises large number of PV modules with module-integrated DC-DC microconverters
and a central multilevel current-fed inverter.
However, output current has low frequency harmonic components when insolation throughout the PV
plant is non-uniform.
Two methods to select switching state vectors are proposed. These methods eliminate low frequency
components in the output currents.
Feasibility of the proposed system structure and the effectiveness of the switching state vectors
selection methods are experimentally validated.
Multilevel Current Source Converter based STATCOM
Renewable energy based distributed generators affect the voltage profile of the feeder. It can be
restored by providing adequate reactive power support.
The proposed central multilevel current-fed inverter can serve as a STATCOM when the PV power
plant is idle at nighttime.
Two control strategies based on space vector modulation technique are proposed.
Performance of these strategies is studied using MATLAB\Simulink.

M.TECH. PROJECT
Operation of Indirect Matrix Converter under Unbalanced Source Voltage and Load Current
Conditions
Guided by Prof. B. G. Fernandes

Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC) is an AC-DC-AC converter without DC link capacitor; it has
bidirectional power flow capability with adjustable input power factor.
Detailed theoretical analysis is performed for the harmonic content of the input current when
unbalanced voltages are applied at the input terminals of IMC, and unbalanced currents are drawn
from the output terminals.
A control strategy is proposed, where the modulation index of the inverter section of the IMC is
dynamically varied to eliminate the harmonic components from the input currents caused due to
unbalanced input voltages.
Effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified on a laboratory scale prototype using
TMS320F28335 DSP.
