SHF - 16-Slot GSX9000HD Chassis

The high density GSX9000HD chassis (Product code SHF-HD) is the physical enclosure for all
other components of the GSX9000 Open Services Switch. This chassis replaces the GSX9000
chassis (Product code SHF10) and supports Sonus high density circuit network server modules
such as CNS60s. Both chassis support all other Sonus server and adapter modules. The
GSX9000HD chassis has 16 slots, two for management server/adapter pairs and 14 for network
server/adapter pairs. The chassis is illustrated in Figure 1 below.

Attaching the GSX9000HD Chassis to a Rack

The GSX9000HD chassis is designed to fit in standard 19 or optionally in 23 rack posts. Your
rack application may require nut retainers as well as screws. Refer to your rack documentation for
proper mounting. To attach the GSX9000HD shelf to the rack, perform the following steps:
Attaching the GSX9000HD Chassis to a Rack

1.

Pick the rack position at which you wish to locate the top keyhole shaped Mounting
Flange hole of the GSX9000HD chassis. This keyhole is 23.54 inches from the
bottom of the chassis, so choose the hole that is nearest to 23.54 inches from the
desired location of the bottom of the chassis. Pick the rack position for the top of the
GSX9000HD chassis.

2.

Install the two mounting sem screws and flat washers at those rack positions.

Attaching Cable Guides

Attach the cable guides to the rear of the GSX9000HD chassis to provide a conduit for the cables
that you will connect using information in the appropriate adapter module FRU documents.
To attach the cable guides, you will need the following hardware:

Four cable guides (provided)

Eight #6-32 by 1/2 inch Phillips Pan-Head sem screws (provided)

#2 Phillips screwdriver

Install this hardware as illustrated in Figure 5.

Once the cable guides are attached, you can proceed with the system power connections.

Connecting System Power

The power connections to the GSX9000HD chassis should satisfy local electrical and safety codes,
and should be connected by trained personnel.
The GSX9000HD is equipped with redundant DC power input terminals (A and B). You may
connect power to the system using either the A terminals or the B terminals. Connecting individual
power to the A and B terminals provides power redundancy.
The GSX9000HD will draw less than 40 A, -48 VDC (-36 - 60 VDC).
The GSX9000HD is equipped with #10-32 size threaded power studs, with corresponding nuts and
lock washers.

SHF - 16-Slot GSX9000HD Chassis

To install the power connections, you will need:

Four two-hole power lugs, centered 0.625 inch apart and capable of accepting the #10-32 size
GSX9000HD shelf threaded power studs

Eight #10-32 nuts with lock washers (provided)

CAUTION

Before attempting to make power connections, verify that the DC power source
supplying your power cables is turned off.

To connect the source power to the GSX9000HD shelf, perform the following steps:
Connecting the Power Source to the GSX9000HD Shelf
1.

Verify that the GSX9000HD shelf circuit breakers are in the OFF position.

2.

Remove the two #6-32 by 5/16 inch Phillips screws from the rear chassis, between
the lower power studs.

3.

Install the power frame (metal surround) to the chassis, using the screws that were
removed in the previous step, and two additional #6-32 by 5/16 inch Phillips screws
from the accessory kit. Attach each power frame tab to the chassis.

5.

Plan your power cable routes to the power studs. From the power frame, you can
bring all four leads in from the right side, or two from the left and two from the right.
Sonus recommends bringing all leads from the right side, where there is more
space. Figure 7, depicts a routing whereby the A leads are brought in the right
outside power frame openings and the B leads are brought in the right inside power
frame openings (see Right Side View). Each A lead is guided above the
corresponding B power stud and wrapped with Fiber Paper to protect the cable
jacket.

8.

Bring each power cable through the power frame opening that you chose, slipping
the cable lugs over the posts to install -48 Volts as depicted in Figure 7.

9.

Secure lugs using the previously removed flat washers, lock washers, and nuts with
a 7/16 inch wrench, as depicted in Figure 7.

10.

Push the bushing on each power cable into place from the outside of the frame into
the opening on the frame as depicted in Figure 7, Right Side View.

11.

Push the power frame plugs from the accessory kit into the unused power frame
openings as depicted in Figure 7, Left Side View.

12.

Install the plastic power frame cover, using the 4 of the #6-32 by 1/2 inch Phillips
screws from the accessory kit.

Attaching System Ground

WARNING

A minor internal defect in any module could cause the GSX9000HD chassis to
become electrified. You could receive a shock by touching the chassis under these
circumstances. By making the connection discussed below, the charge is carried
off to earth so that you cant be shocked.

The GSX9000HD shelf ground connection to local earth ground is located at the back of the
system, in the bottom center. You must adhere to all local electrical codes as you perform this step.
To install the ground connection, you will need the following hardware:

10

Two-hole ground lug, centered 0.625 inch apart and capable of accepting the 1/4-20 size
GSX9000HD shelf threaded ground posts, depicted in Figure 8.
