Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport Modelling

ESG specialise in the application of groundwater flow and contaminant transport
modelling, quantitative risk assessment and hydrogeological techniques to solve
soil and groundwater problems for clients. We have applied groundwater and risk
assessment models in water resource evaluation, mineral extraction, site investigations
and remediation for numerous industrial sites contaminated by
chlorinated organic solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, metals
and radionuclides, etc.
Our ground water flow and contaminant transport modelling services
encompass the following applications:
Modelling Services

Groundwater protection and management

Conducting groundwater vulnerability studies

Defining the time-related ground water protection zones (GPZ)

Evaluating conjunctive use of ground water and surface water resources.

River-Aquifer Interactions

Quantifying river-aquifer interaction

Assessing hydrological and

ecological effects of groundwater
abstraction on stream flows.

Three dimensional plot showing thickness of solvent on

groundwater table prior to remediation

Mine Water Pollution

Predicting the timing and rate

of mine water rebound after the
closure

Assessing environmental impact

of mine water outbreak on surface
water quality

Developing mitigation/remediation
strategies.

Contaminated Land Risk Assessment

Risk calculations for human health at landfill, petroleum and chemically

contaminated sites, and from air emissions

Developing generic assessment criteria and site specific corrective

clean-up concentrations to satisfy regulatory and investment
requirements.

Remedial Alternatives and Design

Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA)

Air sparging

Soil vapour extraction

Bioremediation

Reactive barriers

Hydraulic containment.

Numerical modelling offers a valuable tool in

managing groundwater resources and designing site
investigation programmes with regard to identifying
data gaps and evaluating remedial options and
associated cost benefit analyses.
We also specialise in air dispersion and deposition
modelling using ADMS and AERMOD and are able to
integrate these models into ground water and human
health exposure assessments. These integrations provide our unique capability
in conducting health and controlled waters risk assessments associated with
Environmental Permit applications.
